Sauber actually had 5 drivers signed for 2015 sutil, van der garde, nasr, Ericsson and bianchi all either had contracts or were told they would be at sauber
I remember when Monisha Kaltenborn said it would be dangerous to put a driver without preparation and that's why Giedo can't drive and then Sauber gave multiple free practice sessions to random people like from day to day
Yet, Williams took Paul Di Resta out of the commentary box for Qualifying and the Race without any Free Practice or time on the car. Go figure Sauber's Lawyers
She didn't mess it up. The money she got from the drivers kept the team alive, and she dealt with the fallout later. Unethical for sure - but Sauber survived when others didn't.
She did the same as any man in the situation so this is not on her. If we're to blame anyone, it's better to blame BMW demanding that Peter Sauber buy out their end of their share leaving a huge hole in resources for which they needed. Monisha was canny enough to lure these drivers in to get working capital for the team. The fact that both Ericsson and Nasr came in with more money the next year meant that whatever money Giedo and co. brought last year was effectively not as high so now they could afford to pay off a pesky, combative Dutchman with a bruised ego. If not for her savvy, we wouldn't have 10 teams on the grid so blaming her is just lazy sexism when this is pure F1 101.
Oh Nasr,i miss you so much. You are such a underrated driver. Sad that Banco do Brasil stopped sponsoring you and Sauber didnt saw your potential. FUN FACT: Nasr said some years ago that he also hated Monisha, and that she made life in Sauber a hell for him after he lost the BB sponsorship. All new car parts were directed to Ericcson, since he brought money with him.
As a swede I never really liked Nasr, he made a lot of claims that ericsson got preferential treatment, I dont know if he did but he sounded like a sore loser the second half of the season. Probably the best illustration of the mid 2010s Sauber decline. Thankfully, once Monisha Kalterborn was replaced by Fred Vasseur and the new owners came in (as well as the Alfa Romeo backing) the team rebounded. And with Audi coming in for '26 they could be on to great things (specially with one of the top prospects in racing in Theo Pourchaire in their Academy).
I'm really hopeful for that, and for a Swiss team to bring success to a country not usually known for it in racing after holding on since 1993 with only a single win, it might even encourage an F1 return to Switzerland. I'm just hoping they aren't completely overhauled and get to keep their identity unlike what Alfa was doing. I strongly recall when they won their first race in Canada and, because of BMW ownership, the German anthem was playing but virtually the entire team were ecstatic and holding up Swiss flags.
What I would add here is that after this, vdG went on to have success in motorsport, winning the European Le Mans Series in his rookie year and establishing himself as a good driver in an LMP2 car
I also remember an interview from Giedo. He mentioned that during the seatfitting, nobody was allowed to talk to him, and the employees were ordered to be hostile. That way he wouldn't feel welcome and wouldn't want to race with them.
The kicker for me was, that Monisha Kaltenborn is acutally a laywer by training. I know there are different specialization, but contract law seems like the bare basics to know in that profession.
Ah you see back in the 90s, Ligier had signed Martin Brundle, Aguri Suzuki (yes him of Super Aguri) and Olivier Panis for the 1995 season. How did it work out? Well, Aguri would race the Asian races and Martin Brundle took the other races. This meant that on some weekends with nothing to do, Martin would be commentating on Eurosport with Ben Edwards and John Watson and thus the rest is history. What Giedo forgot was that F1 contracts are rarely honoured - I'm not saying he was wrong to do what he did because F1 is a super slimy world that we enjoy and getting $15 million not to race sounds like my kind of deal but it's an age old adage that F1 contracts are not worth the paper they're printed on.

Actually there is another side to this story that isnt talked about much which Crofty mentioned on Sky F1 just after the whole mess ended. From what I remember he said, they had their line-up sorted in October that year, and their plan was it was going to be Van Der Garde and Bianchi. Bianchi was obviously very hot property in the driver market as not just was he bloody quick, he had Ferrari funding and brought in and saved a lot of money for the team with Ferrari funding and free engines. But then Suzuka 2014 happened and someone thought it would be a good idea to have a crane on the outside of a live wet track despite having a near miss the last time that happened... All of a sudden they did not have the Ferrari funding/free engines anymore that Bianchi would've brought to the team. And there were no other drivers on the market that brought in that level of funding, which Sauber badly needed at the time, apparently together both Ericsson and Nasr brought in a similar amount of cash as Bianchi alone would've brought. This situation could've been handled better from both sides (mainly Sauber should've been a lot more transparent with Giedo about the situation rather than sign two other drivers behind his back) but it was very difficult and there was no easy way to resolve it... Everyone was at the time wondering how they signed so many drivers but this explains it...
Yeah, this was my theory for a while now, after all it is confirmed Bianchi signed with Sauber, i just wasn't sure where the money came from, which is funny because the answer is actually really simple

Sauber did what they had to do. Van der Garde had some decent financiers behind them which was the only reason he was testing for Sauber. But even in the year before, Dutch reporter OIav Mol interviewed the then teamboss Monisha Kaltenborn all but said that he wasn't going to race. Giedo had a contract though. But then they got the option to sign Ericsson who had Tetra Pak backing which was way more money than Giedo had to offer. This was only enough money to keep the Sauber team alive, but also a party to potentially sell the team to. This actually happened and till this day, the team is still owned by Longbow. Part of it has been sold to Audi, but stull Longbow owns it. So it made sense to ditch Giedo and pay him off. He didn't want this and tried to fight for that contract. In the end there was no way he was going to keep it. He got more money than they initially offered him, but his chances of ever getting an F1-seat were over. And not just F1. It took years before he got in a proper racing seat with Racing Team Holland in WEC (so he still had to rely on his Dutch contacts to get that seat). Also, let's not forget that Giedo van der Garde is the last one to have any right to cry about contracts not being followed as stated in the video. The reason why so many parties in racing snubbed him was because this was far from the only dispute he has been involved in. He let his then girlfriend sign a contract at Super Aguri as a test-driver and then decided that that contract wasn't legitimate so that he could go to test for Spyker. Idiotic choice since he would've been one of many testing drivers at Spyker while he was the third driver at Super Aguri and since Montagny didn't finish the season, Giedo might have raced there. And Super was a better team than Spyker. Giedo didn't know this because he didn't keep track of the organizational development. Anyway, Giedo couldn't get out under the Super Aguri contract, but obviously he also wasn't going to test there while he wasn't allowed to test at Spyker. Once that issue was resolved, Giedo got into it with Spyker who didn't even want to let him test. After some legal fighting he got his test there but nothjing more and as stated in the video, Mallya wasn't interested in him. Kaltenborn got a lot of flack for what she did, but it was the way to save the team and jobs for hundreds of people. So she got her hands dirty and got it done. Pity for Van der Garde, but it is what it is, and they would be paid off which is way these things go. Without Kaltenborn, there is a good chance Sauber would've gone bankrupt. Peter Sauber actually gave the reigns to her because he knew how hard it was going to be after BMW left and they had to pay for the entire infrastructure. Giedo talks a lot of shit about how he could've let their assets seized, but this is nonsense. Giedo also tells people his father in law could've bought Brawn and that he would've driven one of the cars. And especially with all his other disputes, he has very little credibility when it comes to this matter.
I mean, it's a little harsh to say Sauber was not fairing any better than Caterham. Yeah, 2014 was bad, but they had pretty decent 2013 after all and would have finished in 6th if Gutierrez did better (he was 16th compared, Hulk was 10th), and they bounced back in 2015 as well. Besides, you couldn't go lower than Caterham at that time.
As a Sauber fan, this wasn't the best situation. Only positive was the car was more competitive that year. Debut P5 for Nasr! Monisha should have been sacked after that and credit to Guido. gave up his ambition and dream to keep racing in F1 so the team could continue, keeping engineers, strategists, etc, in their jobs.
Just think that for one glorious year, , 2024, we're going to have Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Sauber on the grid together... Smells like the 90s
Get well soon, Josh
Sauber is the lease-team of f1, 30 year existence, sure , being sold every 3 or 4 on average
Monisha Kaltenborn was a very bad team principal and an even worse lawyer😂😂😂
I liked the 2016 Sauber design
Nice Video!
0:03 fyi Switzerland recently lifted the ban on Motorsport.
This was the prequel to the screw up known as Alpine
Is that a new mic? It sounds different and higher quality.
Besides, you couldn't go lower than Caterham at that time.
not you predicting liam lawsons year with this title
As a Sauber fan, this wasn't the best situation. Only positive was the car was more competitive that year. Debut P5 for Nasr! Monisha should have been sacked after that and credit to Guido. gave up his ambition and dream to keep racing in F1 so the team could continue, keeping engineers, strategists, etc, in their jobs. He was the biggest winner, Monisha was the one with egg on her face.
1:52 That’s coincidence, not irony.
I love seeing new Josh Revell videos!
