Thank you so much! I'm going to send it over to my Ss' parents))) after translating it into Russian, which is my L1:))))))) there's such a huge stigma on using L1. I've always been surprised.. especially after working in Vetnam and apparently I wasn't able to use their L1 there.. It was ok at lower levels - we could use cards and realia, but as for higher ones - they used online dictionaries to translate some difficult concepts or to make sure they understood them correctly. For example, ""inferiority complex" and stuff. I also use both English-English and English-Russian dictionary when the meaning is unclear and look through the examples, of course. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with that if it helps your Ss. Thank you for sharing!

This made me feel confident to keep up the good work...but my question is: what about regular English classes (not those at language schools)...when you have 30...40 students in class. And I also add this specific moment, where we are facing online teaching, and you wanna make sure that nobody is left behind? I’m definitely speaking more in Portuguese...Well, I’ve received some complaints (very few) but it really let me down and I’m feeling insecure and discouraged...overwhelmed as well. Once again thank you!!!
What you're doing sounds very sensible to me, Beatriz. If you get one or two complaints, but know that you were doing what you were doing out of a desire to help the weaker students and to ensure no-one is left behind, that's a price worth paying in my opinion. For me, the same principles apply whatever size class you're teaching. Judicious use of L1 is a super power you have. Use it wisely - but use it. Hugh
