Avowed produces a very strange feeling, the same one i get when i think of the next Dragon Age and o'boy even Exodus. For the simple reason that the current corporate climate makes it almost impossible to produce something that isn't extremely sanitized and filtered through several layers DEI rules.
@@waketp420 Those Red Fall trailers were more than enough to know the game would be retched, but somehow I was in the minority in realizing that. Somehow people fell for Red Fall.
I have to always remind myself the people that made Fallout NV aren't, for the most part, the same people in the company today. I thought The Outer Worlds was great at first, then the honeymoon phase passed and I started to see its flaws. From what I saw, the overall impressions of the Outer Worlds slowly began to decline after a few weeks.
All the 3 guys that created characters and wrote stuff for Fallout NV left a long time ago John Gonzales left the company, worked for Wb games, Guerilla games (wrote Horizon Zero Dawn) and now is working for a korean company. Eric Fenstermaker pretty much went MIA after Deadfire Chris Avellone left the company after a disagreement with Fearghus Urquart. Had promising career as a freelancer but later he got m2ed by some loon (he was proved innocent).
RPGs need mature elements to be great. This obsession with overly dumbing them down (EG: Bioware going down the simplified ARPG route with anthem, including shallow story) and censoring everything so they can all be PG13 is a large part of what slowly killed the experience.
well Josh Sawyer isn't this game director. They have some young lady I am unfamiliar with as the game director. The fact she is a female is irrelevant. I am concerned she lacks the experience. Yes most of the people who made New Vegas are gone. There are a few there still Sawyer being the best known. If its as mediocre as it seems they need to delay it/hold it back add more races add romances add more content make the game look like a modern game. I think it might fail but if it does I don't think Obsidian is in any danger of being shut down. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is probably going to be the signature rpg this year.
Obsidian has been making games that were very similar to BG3, with the turn based combat swapped for real time with pause. I guarantee they are kicking themselves for not going with a big budget rtw/p version of Avowed as after BG3, it probably would have been huge. And cost half the money Avowed is running them (I'm guessing they could have made an incredible rtw/p game for $50-$75M while Avowed is probably coming in at $100-$150M). Don't get me wrong, Outer Worlds was...fun. A bit quirky, far to repetitive with very little substance to the gameplay, crafting etc...but it was fun for a low budget proof of concept to start a franchise I guess. My best conclusion as to why they went this route as opposed to an rtw/p game is Microsoft. Microsoft probably did not want to fund a crpg, plain and simple. After iNeXile made a masterpiece for $25M with Wastelands 3 that performed like a title that sold, say 1M copies or so (enough to make money but it didn't exactly make waves even though it was a *GREAT* game. 8.5 out of 10 great; best RPG of the year by far...but not enough people played it and being on GamePass, not a lot of people bought it either) the leads would never greenlight a big budget old school Western CRPG. Then Baldur's Gate 3 is released and is the top selling game on Steam that year while Starfield, an RPG in the style of Avowed gets hammered and sells *HORRIFICALLY* compared to it's budget and marketing while being an overall bad experience in every way, shape and form for *MOST* players. Did I say *_"Woops"_* ? Idk, I expect Avowed to be pretty darn good regardless. I did not like the gameplay in Fallout: New Vegas, though I did like the game itself. That was due to the writing, and unfortunately, Chris Avellone is not there to take the lead in that regard anymore. Still, Sawyer and crew are still really, really good at what they do. If they take the writing as seriously as they did in New Vegas as opposed to making it all a sarcastic joke like Outer Worlds I think most people will forgive the gameplay if it is just _eh._ I personally don't care about the graphics, even if they stick with the weird "realistic cartoon" style the promos showed off (I'd rather it be straight cartoon, cell shaded cartoon, or regular old Witcher 3/Mass Effect stylized real-life over the weird blend they've shown, but wtv). Another problem I have is the first person view. I am so tired of first person action rpg's. We like to see the armor, robes, swords, maces, staves, daggers and bows we have equipped. I get it if you are going with a "Night City" Cyberpunk 2077 near photo-realistic world which would require a 7950X or 14900K with a 4090 to run at decent frame-rates, but that obviously is not the case as this game looks like an RX580/GTX 1060 with a 7700K or 2600X could handle things just fine...idk, maybe I'm wrong and they will throw in a 3rd person option like Skyrim and Oblivion did...and hopefully it doesn't suck like Oblivion and Skyrim's ;^). Or was it Fallout 3 and Skyrim? Who cares, everyone gets the point. Again, I personally think it will be a very good game. Obsidian hasn't released a _bad_ game, or even a disappointing at release one in...well since they were founded I believe. Everything has been above average at worst and exceptional on the high-end. The real problem will be the amount of money and time they have spent on it along with the two year delay. If it ends up bringing in 500K subs or selling over 3M copies on Steam/Windows Store then I am sure Microsoft will be thrilled. If not, whelp i doubt they will be shuttered, but the pressure will really be on with whatever they release next. Hopefully the team is allowed to dictate everything about the next title they make, as it really sucks when studios are closed down because of mandates from on high...like asking the Prey peeps to make a Vampire looter shooter. What an idiotic thing to put Arkane on.
The wayward realms will be over 5000 times the size of Skyrim. The dev team not only created arena and Daggerfall but also worked on Morrowind and Oblivion. This is the only game to get excited for a true open world RPG. As Todd would say a huge crazy RPG which they don't make anymore nor could Bethesda create something that large simply because of the base code gamebyro in their game engine.
