    We're messing with you. There's no such thing as charity actors. But in our video, did you recognize stereotypes frequently used in fundraising campaigns? Hunger and poverty is ugly, and it calls for action. However, we need to create engagement built on knowledge, not stereotypes. Why? www.rustyradiator.com/#why
    We need to change the way fundraising campaigns are communicating issues of poverty and development. This is why we are awarding creative fundraising campaigns with the Golden Radiator Award, and stereotypical campaigns with the Rusty Radiator Award. An international jury nominated eight videos, and YOU get to decide the winners by VOTING NOW! Winners will be announced 3rd of December.. www.rustyradiator.com/#rusty-r...

    Intelligent and clever video. It points out that there is real poverty and need in Africa, but stereotypes and western perception of the problems need updating.
    The crowd in the comments section seem to have completely missed it though. Guess you can't cure stupid.

    • @zer0tonin_
      @zer0tonin_ 10 років тому +8

      ***** talking about stereotypes...

    • @WillyAndreBergstrom
      @WillyAndreBergstrom 10 років тому +8

      _Warning: Quite long and unrelated to the video._
      There's a difference between a stereotype and a group characteristic susipls, and I think ***** is correct on this one. He might have put it a bit blunt, but that opinion is shared by most major tech writers (the ones that don't still ride the Ghost Town pony).
      The reason behind it is the early population of Google+. The nucleus of the membership are tech people who were sick of the blatant stupidity displayed on Facebook and Twitter. Since that, loads of other people have joined too, but the general tone has carried over. The grounds are infertile for trolls and morons, and you're more likely to find a good debate instead of just the normal "ur ghey" of UA-cam past.
      I think this is a lot of the reason why Google chose to burn the slum that was the UA-cam commenting system to the ground and replace it with Google+. They're hoping the influx of existing Google+ users who previously avoided the comment sections as the plague, along with a lot more powerful moderating tools, would change the tone of UA-cam as well.
      .... and apart from the morons in Bob's Army, it looks to be quite successful. On channels where the channel owner has spent 15 minutes learning the new tools, spam and trolls are more or less gone. Only dumbasses remain, and you can read a lot of their opinions further down here. I particularly enjoy those that thought this video was anti-aid. Morons...

      There is real poverty in europe too as well as in america. What you call poverty might not be perceived as such by the people experiencing it. I think we need to reassess the real meaning of poverty.

    I know a businessman who 15 years ago was pitching that mobile phone companies invest in Ghana. The CEOs thought he was crazy because _clearly_ Africans are too poor and helpless to use phones.
    Today Ghana has 25 million people and *26 million mobile subscriptions*. [Many people use two].

      I used to be a shipping organizer between Europe, and Africa. So one of the goverments ordered medicine. (Can't remember what virus) We did not have that medicine in stock, but we had the same kind of medicine (same affect, diffrent company)... And i tried to organize, that they get the medicine. But it turns out, that if 90% of the population can't read, and only recognize the medicine by the looks of the package, then you would have a huge problem. Someone finaly figured it out, and saved my ass.

      The richest and the poorest. It's no secret that in most poor areas, someone still manage to get their cake. Just like in the US, the average isn't that bad, but the distribution of wealth is horribly off.

    Great video! In class today we were talking about why we think people are poor, and it was interesting to see that when referring to poverty in Africa, people spoke of lack of shelter and basic necessities. But then in reference to poverty in North America people mentioned the words 'lazy' or 'not working hard enough'.
    It is definitely important for people to get educated! You can't make good decisions unless they're informed decisions.

    @William Adams:
    I, as european completely agree with most of what you are saying; many (but not all) of the problems that african countries encounter while trying to develop have their roots in unfair trade policies and financial imperialism, encated by our western countries. Development Aid can only try to mitigate a fraction of this problems, so political action in Europe towards better and fairer policies would be the bigger help. But as not every african is a greedy corrupt burocrat, not every Westerner is a shallow egotistical profitdriven hedonist. Any many really want to work hard for a better world.

    Reading the comments I got the impression that people think this video is about how NGOs get money out of rich people in the western world. To me, it seems, this is not the point at all.
    I rather think the main focus of the project is to make people question their stereotypes, because STEREOTYPES ROB PEOPLE OF THEIR DIGNITY. Questioning your stereotypes means questioning your convictions, your perceptions of the world, it means questioning your personality and questioning what you think is true. It's a hard way to go and nobody can do it for you but at the end of the day, it's worth the effort.

      Angola's economy is about $130 bln, the EU alone has an economy of $18000 bln, so the Angolan economy is less than 1% of the EU economy.
      Muslims are about 2,5% of Europe so there's no way they'll be a majority in the next few hundred years.

    However, the message that could come across from this is not that we should remember that Africa is not one country or not all poor but that we shouldn't promote helping those that need it because it is patronising...

    This is just great. We have the same problem in Brazil, as we always see our Northeastern "sertão" region as poverty-stricken, diseased people without future. And media couldn't help less on this. Then we just put everyone in the same pot and just look with sad eyes... touching. Maybe this is a global thing.
    Buuuuuuuut, as your site requires social networks to vote, and i want to burn g+, you'll just get my "well done" here.

    • @VitorJTekkRodrigues
      @VitorJTekkRodrigues 10 років тому +4

      And Northeastern Brazil is even more stereotypized than Africa, because isn't actually a place with much poverty or social problems. Actually, its one of the most advanced regions from Brazil, it's just that the Media says that it isn't so they can make rivers of money by "making charity funds for northeastern poor families", which they actually just do because by doing that, they don't have to pay most of the taxes.
