  • In this JEWISH FOOD TOUR of the LOWER EAST SIDE of #NYC, we visit some historic family-owned #Jewishfood businesses including a Kosher Jewish bakery, a classic #Jewish steakhouse and a newly opened but highly acclaimed Israeli-owned bakery.
    Places we visit include:
    0:00 Lower East Side food tour intro New York
    1:01 Moishe's Kosher Bakery 504 Grand Street NY
    5:45 Michaeli Bakery 115A Division Street NY
    8:07 Sammy's Roumanian Style Restaurant 157 Chrystie Street New York, NY (location closed in December 2020 due to the pandemic)
    We also stop in and speak with the Jewish owner of a long-standing menswear business, Global International on 62 Orchard Street, which was one of the major shopping streets for the large Jewish immigrant population in the early 1900s.
    We also see interesting city street life and historic buildings in the Lower East Side along the way.

    About JamesandKarla:
    Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
    In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
    We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.
    Come see the city & subscribe to our channel :)

      Food and Footprints thank you so much for watching! Moishe’s is definitely a classic and has been around since at least the 1970s but possibly even before as we asked the owner but she honestly couldn’t remember the exact date and just waved and said it’s older than you! And yes the old gate was a good place for Hudson to chill as he wanted to eat everything we were talking about!

    I think Jewish food is very tasty, I like their chicken stew and soup. When I was young a Jewish family took me to a traditional Jewish restaurant. I ordered a Chicken soup, which consist of a whole chicken leg. Anyway, thanks for showing the Lower east side eateries.

    • @JamesandKarla

      Oh yes so many NYC Jewish foods traditionally come from immigrants who settled in the Lower East Side from Eastern Europe and are indeed very tasty. To us there is nothing better than a hot Chicken soup especially on a cold winter day or when you are feeling under the weather. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    Years ago, there was a luncheonette called Moishe's that my mother and I would frequent. This was back in the mid 50's to early 60's. She actually was a childhood friend of the owners' daughter. I'm sure they are all gone now, but, this sure brings back memories. It was a great place to eat and I loved their tuna fish sandwiches. Thank you for sharing.

    Love the video. One quick point is that not all Jewish foods or Jewish Style foods are Kosher. That's a major difference because Sammy's Romanian and Katz's Deli are both Jewish style foods, whereas, the 2nd Ave Deli ( now on East 33rd St) and Mendy's Deli , for example are both Kosher. Ditto with Moishe's Kosher Bakery. The same applies with Kosher Pizza shops vs traditional. Anyway, all the stories involved among the stores you've visited here are interesting. Keep up your labor of love. # 1 Fan.

    • @JamesandKarla
      @JamesandKarla  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for the love ❤️! Yes we knew that both Sammy’s and Katz’s are not kosher. Katz’s even serves a Reuben sandwich which would never ever be considered kosher by definition of its ingredients. We have never been to Mindy’s and now will look into it so thank you for the great tip. We miss the 2nd Ave deli’s original location on .2nd Ave at the corner of 10th street (now a Chase bank branch). Thank you again for watching and commenting as always!

    Is there little Germany in New York City.

    • @JamesandKarla
      @JamesandKarla  3 роки тому

      There was once a “Kleindeutschland” or Little Germany in the Lower East Side /East Village in the late 1800s but in the early 1900s many Germans started moving out of the neighborhood’s crowded tenement buildings and went further north into the Upper East Side near 86th Street. The largest exodus of Germans from the East Village happened in 1904 after the General Slocum Disaster when thousands of young children and families were killed on a steamboat disaster in the East River.
