    Wow! This video was really helpful, because I got a Photography art assignment, and I thought 'why not learn a little more than is required?' and it was really worth it. Helpful as always!

      Thanks! I think this is low key the most useful info I've dropped here so far. Works for comics, video, photography.

    Thanks for this Francis! This is a nice refresher course for me and you’ve structured this video very well. Hope I can implement more storytelling techniques for my next webcomic chapter.

    What's amazing about your pages is that you do all this but you do them with crazy page designs. I always wondered, how many hours did you spend/page on those Flash comics? I can't imagine pumping out pages of that quality with deadlines. I'm currently struggling with my workload and have found the panels are suffering. I used to enjoy pushing design and angles but lately it's been more of a panel factory. That was really cute to have your wife in the video!

      hey thanks! The Flash stuff was actually done very quickly. It was intense to write, pencil and ink a monthly book. I think it all depends on the story. You can't do crazy layouts all the time. With the Flash it was very natural to do it and it felt like a very fluid process for me. I think writing it really helped make the process seamless. That said I was able to hide a lot of storytelling faux pas using that technique and have toned down a bit more in order to really focus on simple and clear story layouts.

      Ah, actually they're just ikea shelves I literally stacked. I should mount it to the wall for extra stability though...

    Great story :) Thank you for this tutorial. It's hard to tell a good story and pick the right angle sometimes. Very informative and please, do more content like this if you can. Also, planet earth would like to thank you for supporting sustainable alternatives ;)

    I never understood why people separate movie camera angles from comic book panel angles. They are mostly the very same thing. Storyboarding is used for movie making to get the right angle in a shot.

    This was very well done. Entertaining and educational. Must’ve took a few tries just to get the phone stuck to the right spot on the ceiling. Do you break the books/videos up into panels as your writing the action or afterwards?
    Your point about the lack of camera limitations when drawing is an excellent one. I try to keep the seen from Kill Bill in the back of my mind when I’m editing - the animated scene where we see the escorts surprised faces from inside the mob boss’s head wound. It occasionally helps remind me of what’s possible when I might otherwise be caught up in just getting something down.

    • @FrancisManapulArt
      @FrancisManapulArt  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the phone shot was a lot of trial and reframing. I tend to have a homogeneous process. Every story starts with an outline and I'll iterate on that by writing short paragraphs describing each page. After that is when I"ll start the layouts. However, some scenes begin as layouts then get fleshed out through scripting. To me it feels like sculpting, I don't know what reads right until its on the page. Sometimes I have it nailed in my head then i don't bother with the layouts, I just write it. But more often than not, I need to see it.

      @@FrancisManapulArt I see, that makes sense. My brain lacks that passive function, and I tend to just picture a dream-like movie in my head and hope I’m not writing something that’ll be impossible to economically panel up later. I’ve been thinking about making some pages with nothing but backgrounds in the panels for practice. But I’ve also been thinking to just not worry about it too much for now and cross that bridge when I find an artist. Hopefully I’m not digging a deep hole for myself in that regard.

      Been trying to figure out how to do it for my older videos and aside from manually transcribing it, I haven't found a way to do it. Open to suggestions if you have any tips.
