yeah is sad to see all this beautiful green gone. i live in jambi, and several years ago one of local tribe caught this gharial even he have the concience to not kill it and instead report it to forest ranger.
it was wonderful news for the rangers because they thought the gharial has gone from the (merangin) river. it's the first sighting of gharial since the 90s

An adult false gharial is IMO the most impressive croc. It has thinner jaws nor catching fish yet is strong enough to kill big deer and people.

The Tomistoma _Tomistoma schlegelii_ is indeed a rare, uncelebrated, and poorly studied Crocodilian; which seems odd considering it is arguably 2nd only to The Indian Gharial so far as freakish appearances. Molecular Studies have confirmed that it is definitely not a Crocodile, but rather 1 of 2 extant members of the Gavialidae family ( the other being the Gharial) Parental care of the young has never been documented in Captive or Wild Tomistomas, a distinction shared by none of the other 23 species of Crocodilians. Supersized, 5+ Meter Specimens were known to have existed in the past, with the longest known Crocodilian Skull in any collection belonging to this species. The Tomostoma’s Jaws were Once thought to be too narrow to be any real danger to people, but from 2008-2012 there were at least 3 fatal confirmed attacks; probably a result of further human encroachment, habitat destruction, and a reduction in available prey.

I doubt gharials or gavials are intentional man eaters though, so that’s sad they had to kill it. Yes their jaws are potentially damaging, I mean.. I don’t really wanna make one mad. But those thin teeth and narrow snouts are for fish, plain and easy. Mayb3 amphibians, young turtles, and even some small ducks or waterfowl… but i can’t picture them being able to wrestle a large, furry mammalian creature, much less a person…like if a deer, or any other mammal, came to drink water, imagine a gharial versus a Nile croc creeping up and dragging their prey - all the kicking & fighting to get away puts the gharial at real risk of snout damage, brain injury, broken bones, teeth, etc Most crocodilians are made to take down stronger prey items, look at their anatomy. Gharials just can’t take that risk, but if they were harassed or CORNERED I have faith they’d attacks person.. so any death by gavialiad was probably more the person at fault, to be honest.

The life style of tomistoma is largely undocumented. It is apparent, that the snout grows more massiv with age. It seems that they switch from fisch to mammals as they grow larger. We often spotted them lying in ambush under branches with sleeping monkeys. More often than it can be coincidence. @@erikm8372

At 1st glance, they appear like the real Gharial. But the False Gharial is almost like the True Crocodiles, like The Orinoco Crocodiles & The African Slender Snouted Crocodiles.

The false gavial (tomistoma) is unique - there us really no point in comparing it to crocodiles, unless I missed your point.

    • @dylangeltzeiler946

@@Steevee14 More importantly It’s closely related to True Crocodiles than to Indian Gharials.
