In order for God to 'create something out of nothing' , He first had to create the 'nothing' . . This is where the concept of Tzimzum comes from, the contraction of Ein Sof (infinite light). He had to pull back himself and make room and space for the 'nothing' to exist. and when he pulled back himself to make room for the space, there was a 'residue' of divinity left within that space. And he is feeding a constant supply of divine light to and through the residue into our now shaped world.
