I love the copper on the outside idea too!!!! It would enhance the "old timey age" look of the tub. Because way back when in days gone by, copper was used for all sorts of household things, so having the outside of this tub be copper like the entryway ceiling, in my opinion would showcase this tubs age and look great....and yes..shiny black feet! Not sure if they've already purchased (cannot remember) the sink to go into that "vanity" but a copper sink would tie together the room - warm glow in an evening bath too!
I went on Ebay, and there are a lot of old feet for the tubes there. I'm so proud of you trying to not spent more money and doing it yourselves. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Don't try to do it all at once. Come back to it later. The puppy was so cute. It's just as cute as the new piggies. Happy Valentine
Happy Valentine's Day to you and your family ❤ As I'm watching you explain that your sander is not reaching where the walls and the bottom of the tub meet, I'm thinking that Amazon has a portable sandblasting gun that MIGHT work, for those rounded spaces... just food for thought and I totally get your desire to bring everything back, to it's former glory 💪💪🙏🙏 I'm glad you're pacing yourself Elysia and have a wonderful evening!
My brother hauls these tubs out of farm fields, sand blast and refinishes them with a commercial spray. I had him look at your video and said use a HEAT GUN! Also said there are no visible chips or stains so do not refinish or you will be redoing it in 5 years. The blue was a color back then like a Tiffany blue!
I have used a wire sanding wheel or brush to get into those hard to reach curves. It attaches to my drill. I believe you can also get them to fit your angle grinder.
You are awesome Elysia! I totally understand the feeling you expressed about wanting to keep the history and integrity of this original tub. When you are soaking in your beautifully restored tub, all the sweat, sore muscles and fatigue will be a distant memory and you will smile and bathe in the satisfaction that YOU DID THIS!
Well done for all your effort, you done well and should be proud that you are saving this beautiful 100 year old bath, it is going to look amazing once finished and bathing looking out of that window is just a dream for us all to have , congratulations on all your hard work. love watching the English family such an inspiration 👏👏
careful with messing with the feet of the tub, when you go to do anything with them be sure to attach them well to the tub. we use to have one and our very tiny daughter sat on the edge of the tub while getting into it and a leg fell off of the tub and it tipped over and busted off the pipes, thank goodness it didn't hurt my daughter.
I think a sage green with gold or copper feet. Green is such a relaxing color, especially if you add plants. Maybe copper ceiling. They make wallpaper that looks like old ceiling tiles. Paste it and it should hold. Then paint it copper.
I like the idea of painting the outside of the tub a color rather than leaving it white. When I was house hunting, in one of the homes the outside of the clawfoot tub was painted navy blue and it looked very nice.
Don't be discouraged, just take your time with the older things. I don't think it looks bad if it's not perfect. Just consider the age. I wouldn't throw it away. I would paint it black with gold feet. You'll know what we'll do best for you. I see your heart, I'm with you. Good luck it'll come out great.😊😊😊
You can buy a cheap compressor equipment and still be ahead and use quartz sand, while learning to sandblast. It’s not hard I helped my brother back in the 80s with his car that we sandblasted. We took all the paint off the car down to metal.
Try using a Bremell or something similar to do the tight areas maybe. I spent a month doing my bathtub, 20 yrs ago, and it’s stood the test of time. I painted mine on the outside with Hammerite gun metal grey with gold feet. I loved mine when l did it and I still love it today, nothing nicer then laying back in a deep old tub and relaxing. Good luck in your endeavour.
Hi Elysia Philip & boys,it is worth your time & effort Elysia.I hope you can get it all off! Bless you for your hard work. Have a great week English family. My parents had a tub like this.❤️
I would totally love to come sand on that tub for a while for you and work out some frustrations. I know it has a whole new life ahead of it’s just being stubborn. If anyone can do it it’s you!
I hope you video the whole process of the tub makeover. I think it will work because you are very good at making things impossible turn out to look amazing.
My hubby fixed up an old cast iron tub for me 💜💜 white inside, high gloss black with road gold feet.. it looks amazing on our back verandah in my hanging garden ❤️🇦🇺🌞
I can’t believe you’ve so much sweat equity into the tub!! I would’ve given up at some time before you did. I am guessing what you’re going to do next is a reglazing. Whatever you do, it will turn out well. I’m cheering for you!! ❤
I refinished my MILs old tub about 50 years ago. She sent to England for the paint kit, from Tasmania. It was a lot of work, a 48hour drying time but looked brand new when done. It didn’t look as well worn as yours though. It’s worth it. 🇦🇺🎸⚡️🤘🏿🤘🏼💋❤️
I love Citristrip gel for removing paint. It does a really good job on multiple layers. And it doesn't have harsh fumes. Amazon carries it too. Good luck!
My son the painter suggested that this tub may have been painted with oil paint. You may want to try a lacquer thinner in a small area to see if it may work in removing the old paint. Be sure to ventilate the room, the smell is very strong. Good luck
Move the electric heater to the wall under the window and put the bathtub along the left wall. Paint the outside of the tub in a color coordinated to the rest of your bathroom color scheme.
This type of tub is worth it, I had a friend with one and she let me come there periodically to use it! Kind of strange but I really enjoyed using it! Give it your all!
We bought a small sandblaster to remove the paint and imperfections from our thirty-one foot 1961 Cris Craft steel hulled roamer boat. It was work but it did a fabulous job. The cost for the small sandblaster wasn't too bad either. Sometimes you can find them from people who bought them for a job and no longer want them. Best of luck to you and Phillip.
I believe the product used on your tub may "gel coat" paint. It's s a marine paint and I know it's also used on fiberglass tanks. Sanding it smooth, maybe the only way to fix your tub. Your on the right track.
I have re done my bathtub a few years ago / and yes, it’s a lot of work!! Mine wasn’t as old as yours , but there were cracks in it that I had to repair first 😳. It turned out beautifully in the end - but it wasn’t soooo easy . Good work, Elisha ! It’s going to be fantastic when you’re done !!! As always ❤
I totally get your desire to keep the tub and finish it beautifully and be able to look back at all you've accomplished and be so proud of yourselves. We live in a house we built with our very own two hands in the 1970's and we're still going strong after 56 years of marriage.❤❤❤ I think you and Philip are truly Romantics!
The kind that has lye. I watch the guy that restores old iron skillets. He has a lye vat he dips them in but says you can use oven cleaner if you're just restoring one skillet. He sprays them in a plastic trash bag and then turns the bag inside out to seal skillet inside for at least 24 hours. Then washes it off.
I think it will work! Go for it! Even if you just use it for a little while and later have it sand blasted n the future. I do not think you will have to think it will look good. Can not wait to see, your gong to drive me bonkers waiting but oh the suspense, it is killing me. Get her done. Peace!
Hi Elysia, “She holds Dearly” on UA-cam just redid her tub. She used A razor and Clorox toilet bowl cleaner and something else. It’s worth a watch. This hard work you’re doing! 😅
I soooo miss having a big old tub like that. I hate the newer tubs, either not long enough for me to relax and soak in or not deep enough to hold enough water to cover me. The old claw foots are and we had 3 boys back then and in a pinch could fit all 3 in for a bath if needed. Thinking you might need one of those foam sanding pads for the curved places know they work on curved wood surfaces.
My Great Aunt and Uncle saved their tub several years ago. I called my cousin to see how. There was a man that came to their home and used some kind of blaster on it. She thought it was a sand blaster. They had to hang heavy duty plastic around the tub and door to contain the mess. She said as much as she hated cleaning it up, it was so worth it!
I think the blue color is the original first coat. The white is the top coat of paint, and the yellowish color is the glaze like layer they put on it to finish it. The yellowish color is probably because the years and years of dirt stains in that layer of glaze.
✨❤️ you are working so hard, have you considered using a torch and a stainless steel scrubby ✨🔥✨… heat up the paint just enough to melt it and then, with his paint scraper and a stainless steel scrubby, you should be able to work the most of it out! Good luck✨🔥✨
I think your bath tub was made by the Port Hope Sanitary co. QUEBEC Canada. It's beautiful. I also have a free trading claw tub in bad condition, but can't part with it soon comfy ❤❤❤Happy Valentines to all of you. Staying in tonight steak and shrimp..Hate to say but using my chippy tub for 11 years so it will all be gone soon. Hopefully then I will be able to afford a new finish.😊
I have found that Elysia does not do things halfway. She is definitely not someone who will do something just to make it do. So she’s not painting over a banged up tub. I have no doubt that when it’s finished, it will be beautiful, and I just got into the video.
OK I'm strange I actually like it as it is the powder blue and white yellowish looks like the sky and if you look at it it's a farmhouse chippy style .
The bluish color you see is not paint, it’s the original finish of the tub. I refinished mine in our cottage before we moved it in our new house and back then, doing it myself it lasted about 10 years and then I resanded just the parts where the paint was doing little bubbles and kept it for another few years. Hubby had sanded it and the I finished it with a kit that had epoxy in it, the more epoxy, the stronger the finish will be, what I am seeing from the white original finish which you saw like bluish, if it all comes out like that, you might want to try it out as is and refinish the outside and see if it would be ok. Back then using the best refinish kit and all we did to it had cost us around $300, 2 coats, which was a lot for about 25 years ago. If you cannot sand all the paint out, try a paint stripper, let it 15 Ro 20 minutes to bubble and then scrap with a plastic trowel so not to scratch the original finish. Good luck.
I think the copper paint you used in the entry would be wonderful on the outside of the tub!
Yes! With black feet ❤
If you watch, She holds dearly, she just refurbished a claw foot tub. It turned out beautifully!
I watched the video definitely very helpful on the tools to use to get the paint off and the tub smooth.
Her tub of epoxy seems quite a lot bigger as well.
I dont blame you for wanting to keep this tub. I love it too. so onward you go and there will be no regrets. love you all,
So glad to see this pop up!! Must admit I like your remodeling videos the best. You amaze me with the things you do; you are FEARLESS!
I went on Ebay, and there are a lot of old feet for the tubes there. I'm so proud of you trying to not spent more money and doing it yourselves. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Claw feet for the tub

Take it easy on your arms. Have a nice evening. Happy Valentine's Day💕💕💕💕
To you all.😃👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I have used a wire sanding wheel or brush to get into those hard to reach curves. It attaches to my drill. I believe you can also get them to fit your angle grinder.
A gold tub on the outside would be gorgeous! Blessings from Oregon.
I admire your determination! I get overwhelmed just cleaning my bath rooms - let alone do what you do! You go girl!!!
You made your own kitchen cabinets, you can do this!
You are such a hard worker. I’m sure the tub will be beautiful
GIRL! It's so worth it! I think you're doing an amazing job! A few days (week?) of work to save that beautiful piece!!! #PRICELESS
Well done for all your effort, you done well and should be proud that you are saving this beautiful 100 year old bath, it is going to look amazing once finished and bathing looking out of that window is just a dream for us all to have , congratulations on all your hard work. love watching the English family such an inspiration 👏👏

I’m so proud of you. You persevere that’s for sure! Bless your heart. I really like those chubby little feet on your tub. I hope you paint them gold!
Elysia, I have no doubt you will make your tub look amazing.
I like the idea of painting the outside of the tub a color rather than leaving it white. When I was house hunting, in one of the homes the outside of the clawfoot tub was painted navy blue and it looked very nice.
I painted a cast iron tub from 1924 and I love it. It’s worth working on and keeping. My was dated on the bottom, maybe yours will be too.
Getting me excited to restore the tub I bought from the same time frame
Don't be discouraged, just take your time with the older things. I don't think it looks bad if it's not perfect. Just consider the age. I wouldn't throw it away. Yes yes a small one or even a soda blaster.
Can they do that inside their house?
@@karenturner7983yes just tarp the area. You also can reuse the sand because it will be easy to pick up from the tarp
Hi Elysian I look it up yep its old very old am happy u keeping it
Go girl, its worth it because when you finish, it would look beautiful, even better then a new one💖💖💖💖💖💖

I love that you cherish the old. I am so happy that you aren’t giving up and you keep persevering. It will be absolutely lovely💕🌻
Hi Elysia Philip & boys,it is worth your time & effort Elysia.I hope you can get it all off! Bless you for your hard work. Have a great week English family. My parents had a tub like this.❤️
Yes! Keep the tub! Imagine how many butts it's seen!! 😂
I would totally love to come sand on that tub for a while for you and work out some frustrations. I know it has a whole new life ahead of it’s just being stubborn. If anyone can do it it’s you!

Oh my! You wear me out !! Lol. Love your mindset and fortitude. Your awesome 😊🤟
Awesome It's going to look amazing when you're done love and hugs to all Have a blessed weekend 💗

It will be so worth doing gold scroll type feet on the bath with all the hard work you have put in to it it will be great to finish it off glamorous
I love Citristrip gel for removing paint. It does a really good job on multiple layers. And it doesn't have harsh fumes.
Amazon carries it too.
Good luck!
You have so much determination and dedication ❤I admire you so much!
Happy to see you trying restore the tub
Port Hope is a town in Ontario and is about an hour east of Toronto. I live in the town beside Port Hope. 😊
I'm from Cobourg! Her tub has travelled!
Well, you have earned the first hot bath/soak for sure!
I think it will be so awesome if you can make that tub look amazing. I think you will be so proud when it's done and looks great
Go for it! It will mean so much more after you get it to what you want!
What a ton of work! Hope your arms recover tonight. Can't wait to see next video.
Sanding the tub is a tough job, but I think it will be worth it in the long run
I miss our old claw foot tub, but I really enjoy the walk in jacuzzi tub we have now.
Maybe put a piece of foam rubber on the sander before you put the sanding square on to help prevent the scratches on the tub?
My son the painter suggested that this tub may have been painted with oil paint. You may want to try a lacquer thinner in a small area to see if it may work in removing the old paint. Be sure to ventilate the room, the smell is very strong. Good luck
I tried the lacquer remover as well :( thanks for the tip tho!
WOW that's such an undertaking. I must commend you for your hard work. You and Philip are amazingly talented at DIY.a
Oh my, you have worked so hard! No doubt the tub will turn out beautiful.
I love your attitude about the tub
Keep it up....am sure your hubby would be glad to help you. Will be worth it when you are done.
Move the electric heater to the wall under the window and put the bathtub along the left wall. Paint the outside of the tub in a color coordinated to the rest of your bathroom color scheme.
Oh my gosh ! My husband and I turned our tub upside down and found all the information on the bottom. Year, length and maker !
This type of tub is worth it, I had a friend with one and she let me come there periodically to use it! Kind of strange but I really enjoyed using it! Give it your all!
FYI work gloves will help with the vibration fatigue and potential nerve damage from that much sanding! I love how surprised the tub always looks 🤣
She needs to wear eye protection to save those eyes that have so much vision.
I really hope this turns out for you. You don't need another lawn ornament lol. I know its gonna be beautiful in the end fingers crossed 🤞 good luck
Bless your heart & shoulders!!!
Phillip….rub her shoulders!!!!😂
Tubs gonna be pretty!
♥️💙💙💙🤟🤟🤟🤟

Just imagine what your biceps and forearms are going to look like when you're done! 😂 Don't forget to switch arms so you workout evenly. Nice job! 😊
Very familiar with the residual vibration after using a palm sander. Hang in there. It'll be worth it.
Love your videos always look forward to them you take such wonderful care of all your Critters
So much work. I admire your positivity. I’m sure the tub will turn out beautiful. 😊🤟🏼💕🙏🏼
I believe the product used on your tub may "gel coat" paint. It's s a marine paint and I know it's also used on fiberglass tanks. Sanding it smooth, maybe the only way to fix your tub. Your on the right track.
Love your work ethic 💕 A white interior with a dark blue outside and gold feet would be amazing looking 😍
I have re done my bathtub a few years ago / and yes, it’s a lot of work!! Mine wasn’t as old as yours , but there were cracks in it that I had to repair first 😳. It turned out beautifully in the end - but it wasn’t soooo easy .

You guys are so amazing and hard working!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
I had my old tube painted with a kit from the hardware store. I had a painter do it, but I am confident that you could do it.
You go girl. You've got this. I love your determination! 😘
🤟 God bless the English family.
Did you ever find out why they would have repainted the tub? You've got A LOT more patience than I do!
not yet so far looks fine underneath :)
Elysia, Oven cleaner you can spray it on the tub and it does help to strip off paint. you may want to try it

Just keep in mind your 1st time in the tub❤ will help cheer you on
Hi Elysia, “She holds Dearly” on UA-cam just redid her tub. She used A razor and Clorox toilet bowl cleaner and something else. It’s worth a watch. This hard work you’re doing! 😅
It needs to be sandblasted! ❤
I soooo miss having a big old tub like that. I hate the newer tubs, either not long enough for me to relax and soak in or not deep enough to hold enough water to cover me.
I love the fact that if you have a challenge on a project you said “ challenge accepted “ I’m sure you will get that tub to a beautiful state .
I think the blue color is the original first coat. The white is the top coat of paint, and the yellowish color is the glaze like layer they put on it to finish it. The yellowish color is probably because the years and years of dirt stains in that layer of glaze.
I agree. The blue is the undercoat and the white is the original glaze. The yellow was added later.
Staying in tonight steak and shrimp..Hate to say but using my chippy tub for 11 years so it will all be gone soon. Hopefully then I will be able to afford a new finish.😊
Make sure you get all you can off near the drain area so your plumping will seal ok
You may do well with an electric orbital sander. They have the discs that strip paint. Good luck!
Thank you!❤🎉
Great work and determination 👏🏻🤘🏻
A wire-brush attachment for your sander might be a good idea.
I have found that Elysia does not do things halfway. She is definitely not someone who will do something just to make it do. So she’s not painting over a banged up tub. I have no doubt that when it’s finished, it will be beautiful, and I just got into the video.
You might try a grinder tool. They sell grinding wheels for stripping paint. Just a suggestion. Can’t wait to see the finished product.
OK I'm strange I actually like it as it is the powder blue and white yellowish looks like the sky and if you look at it it's a farmhouse chippy style .
The bluish color you see is not paint, it’s the original finish of the tub. You are amazing!
In the UK we can hire sand blasters, is that an option there? You'd only need it for one day xxx
WOW!!!
