For those bigger rockets your issue was not predictability or lift but the pitching moment induced on the CG due to the fact that your thrust line isn't centered. For the smaller motors the horizontal stabilizer is able to counteract the pitch well enough but at the higher thrusts the force turning the aircraft's pitch was too great. This is why when the larger motors were on top the aircraft pitched down rapidly and why when they were below the aircraft pitched up and looped! I think you should give it another shot with the big motors (maybe not the homemade sugar bomb-- I mean motors) but put the motors closer to the center of gravity and they might do better, or maybe the thrust is just too great even without the pitching moment. Either way, there is a lot to learn and science to do for a video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the insightful comment! Remember, I was still trying to use a camera, that makes balancing the plane a little bit trickier. As the Rockets burned they would lose mass altering the center of gravity. I totally agree about the angle of thrust though, but duct taped wasn't enough to perfectly aligned the engines, they had so much force they could stretch the table just a few degrees and that would cause erratic behavior of the plane :/ ps LOL about the sugar bombs! I made my motors based on the king of random's tutorial, maybe he was just trying to eliminate the competition ;)
4:22 I don't know why but this scene is very calming and is incredible, it's either the time of day, the music, or the orange exhaust. Or maybe all three.
"At least I'm not the only one with rocket problems Everyone at NASA: I spent 5 years in college to be compared to a dude with a $2 Styrofoam plane It's not a hate comment, it was meant as a joke
for about 10 years i never ate fast food, then one day i bought a 12 pack of regular tacos, of course i ate them all at once bc they were soo "good." two days later i got the shits and it lasted for hours
You probably figured this out already, but when the engines ejected from the housing, it threw off the center of gravity. You could fix this by using booster engines (no ejection charge). Also, as the engines get bigger, the tolerances get smaller, making it difficult to build good F and higher engines at home. I finally got some Gs to work after blowing many of them up, but I had to mix epoxy into the nozzles and end caps (clay alone wouldn't work--I don't have an arbor press) and experiment with half a dozen nozzle diameters (even a 64th of an inch can make a big difference).
Great comment. The center of gravity issue goes beyond the ejection charge. Half of my b and c engines were boosters. The Rockets also lose mass as they burn changing the center of gravity, and in the case of a D or E engine that could be a couple ounces lost. The sugar rockets I made were built to F class specs, and I totally agree that the clay nozzles have to be absolutely perfect or you can blow them out from overpressure (or sub par thrust). I thought about making epoxy end caps, but then the motor failure might be an actual explosion rather than just blowing out the end cap. I stuck with Clay nozzles because I don't have that much experience building rocket engines. I've had good success with sugar rockets in the past, but maybe I didn't hammer them enough, or there was something wrong with my mixture or clay, because literally all 12 Rockets failed.
Yeah, I blew up several engine casings in testing. Another problem is that as the PVC heats up under pressure, the epoxy end cap or nozzle can shoot out like a large, soft, but nonetheless destructive bullet. So you really have to scour some deep grooves into the PVC where it contacts the end cap, or find some other secure way of attaching it all together. I also found out the hard way that small differences in the moisture content of the rocket fuel effect the burn rate significantly. So if you build an engine using certain specs and let it sit for a couple of days, and it works fine, and then you build another using the same specs and launch it on the same day, it may blow out the end cap. Thanks for the great video!

Cool video, but I have a few suggestions for a possible re-do. 1.) It looks like the engine mount on top of the plane is pointed at a downward angle with respect to the body line. This is why the planes tend to nose-dive as soon as the engine goes off. Vice versa for why it flew upward once you moved the mount from the top to the bottom. 2.) Your sugar engines seemed to be an incorrect mixture. There's no way they should have been that weak. 3.) Instead of throwing the planes, why not use the rocket launch stand at an angle? That would allow for a more consistent launch to compare to rather than adding a human element. This would also allow you to hook up the electronic ignitions rather than using those fuses. Additionally, you could even try mounting an engine under each wing and re-wiring the launch controller to ignite both simultaneously for an extra experiment. This is the first video I've seen of yours and you've got a new sub! Pretty excited to see what else you've got!
For 1) It doesn't have to be mounted on a down/upward angle. Mounting in a way such that the thrust vector is not going through the center of mass is enough to make it nosedive or loop.
blizzy1978 Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're both saying the same thing here. I was pointing out that it was mounted on an angle when it shouldn't be, and should be mounted parallel to the body line (so it would thrust through the center of mass). Cheers!
Since the thrust line is counter to the natural angle of attack of the wing the aircraft behaves initially nose heavy when the rocket fires. However, with increased speed the minor correctiveness of the fixed elevator becomes more influential on the aircraft attitude and thus counters the down thrust.
Centre of lift is 1/3 back from the leading edge of the wing. Centre of mass should be just in front of COL and thrust can be done by eye and common sense

never get them to light at the same time. what he needs to do is attach "fins" to the rocket engine. balance the glider without the engine for proper glide. now adding the rocket motor will make it nose heavy (a good thing actually) also add some "wings" to the rocket motor to try and force the glider to pull up to counter the rocket engine trying to force the nose down. once it burns out the ejection charge will kick the motor free BOTH restoring proper glide CG (balance) AND removing the added up force of the add on fins. with a little trial and error you should be able to get it to work. also quest has some D2 motors. really "weak" but long burn d engines. idea for gliders. you probably won't even need to add up force fins with that little thrust.
+JD Felder maybe weight wise balanced but you would have asymmetric thrust. when which ever one fired first changed the attitude of the glider the second one to fire would either compound the attitude change or violently oppose it and prolly cause a catastrophic departure of control,or structural integrity.
