Actually the best engine for the Cal 40 is the Beta 43. The 38 is rated at 3600 rpm which will not result in happy motoring if you prop it for that RPM. It is actually about 30hp if you slow it down to a reasonable speed. If you put an efficient prop on it it should still be sufficient and the weight savings will certainly help performance, but I'd rather listen to the 43 ticking along at 2300. The problem with putting a too-powerful engine in your boat is that you can't properly load the engine. And the worst thing for a diesel engine is to idle along with no load.. Think glazed cylinder liners and a relatively quick trip back to you friendly dealer to deposit another wad of boat greenbacks.
I really like the flush mount with the lockable handle. Fit right down in the stbd lazarette.
As always a great update..... thanks for sharing...
Not an exciting subject but of critical importance. Hearing the discussion that goes into the process is enlightening. Keep it up.
This video pumps me up!

In the hypothetical rollover stated, wouldn't you lose the handle on the vertical pump?
How about a real update, we all have pumps... Not Cal 40's
Drive the boat ? Hmmm. Steer sounds better
Better than nothing I guess.
