    I used the 90 amp flux welder for making a rudimentary bicycle trailer (out of bed rails because I can’t afford a real bicycle trailer) and that trailer served me for 13 years (and continues serving!) hauling my push mower, blower and cleaning gear! Thanks for the video!

    Great vid hey I've been a welder fabricator for almost 40 yrs that welding machine is what it is !! If you don't have the means to get a higher amp name brand welder this is what you buy than upgrade to a mig 75/25 if you have to do a weld with this machine Say 1/4 " or 3/8" bevel your steel and then leave a little gap Say a 32" to 1/16" gap run a root pass then multi pass over it to builld your weld strength but don't use it where anyone's life would be at risk

    Thanks for showing this weld 1/2" plate. While not meant for welding skyscrapers, it's impressive for a cheap machine running on 110.

      Roger that, mate. His welds look better than most of mine, too. I have the same welder and have done dozens of repairs with it; from light structural stuff to refurbishing the exhaust system on my van (lots of broken pipe and pinholes), after which it held high-pressure air - pretty impressive - not to mention that it's quiet as new. This welder has worked well for me and is easy to use. The high/low switch failed, but I bought an off-the-shelf replacement which has worked flawlessly. Ya gotta love those Chinese for using non-proprietary components, which are way easier and cheaper to replace. I'm not a Harbor Freight promoter, but occasionally you can get an exceptional value there. Good video overall.

    I rebuilt a 1971 VW Super Beetle and used the same welder to repair side panels and floor sections (with rivets also) . I did hundreds of welds with it and the welder never overheated. I used a better wire of heavier gage. That was a year ago and the repair looks good and strong. Thank you Habor Freight!

    I like your video. I got this welder and really like it. I make bicycles and tricycles with mine. The welder works great as far as I am concerned. I did stick welding before in a shipyard. This flux core welding is new to me, but starting to get the hang of it. I've heard a bunch about how crappy this welder is, but it works great for me for what I do. I'm normally welding 1" square tubing about 14 gauge, and 1" flat bar, both steel. My wife got this welder for me for Christmas for $80, and glad she did, I love the machine! Once again, nice video. The more I watch the vids, the more I learn, and get better and better!!! Thanks!

      +Mark Peters What is a serious welder? someone who welds thick metal only? You can be a serious welder making chairs and gokarts. Also this works great for making many custom things such as shelves, tables, repairs to a home or vehicle. Messing around means its cheap enough to buy and learn how to weld by trial and error. You can always upgrade if you need to. The fat people comment was intended as a weight capability of the welds. It's funny, but on a serious note, i'd like to know if i can use this machine to weld something capable of holding multiple people such as if i wanted to weld a custom Bed, computer desk or stripper pole. I think he did a great job with the video.

    • @ldwithrow08
      @ldwithrow08 7 років тому +3

      A cheap flux welder is great for tacking up something like an exhaust system in place so you can take it to the shop to finish it. I built a boat trailer by laying the frame up on the bottom up boat and tacking it with a flux welder. Finished it with a stick welder in the shop. Got a perfect fit to the boat, without a lot of cut and try.

    I’ve never welded and I’m sure that I would make lots of mistakes and get lots of “you’re doing it wrong!” comments on UA-cam, but you may have convinced me that this is exactly the type of machine that I need. I don’t need to weld natural gas pipelines and I don’t need a pro-grade duty cycle... I just need to tack angle iron together, fix fence posts and do other little, fun crap that makes me happy. If I need a pro duty-cycle, then that probably means that what I really needed to do was CALL AN ACTUAL WELDER, right?
    Great video. Restores my faith in humanity to see competence on the Internet.

    Great video, no bullshit, right to the point. I like the real world comments like how many fat people it will withstand. Go-kart references. I have one of these welders, and while I probably wouldn't buy another one (had trouble with the wire feed (not the mechanism itself, but the plastic tube that the wire feeds through, I think the actual welding ability of the machine is pretty good.

      You are utterly wrong Justin.
      You never watched old 1940's B&W cartoons did you pal?
      The old skyscapers were riveted together.
      A coal fired forge sat 200ft up on the I-beam and a guy tossed up a red-hot rivet to a guy catchin it in a bucket. Then the bucket guy pushed the hot rivet with metal tongs into the hole bracing it firm, and another guy holding a big-ass air hammer flattened the small end with a few air hammer blows. Never loosen up!
      That's why the bridges and buildings[Eifffel tower] etc. stay together 4-eva and so well. Old dudes had forearms like friggin tree trunks-BadMofos.

      Most Elementary age school age children disdain working on machines from about age eight to about age twelve with their Dad's, since Daddy tires quickly of: Incorrect assembly, NOT Listening, or the kids insufficient lack of ability to exert enough force on the fastener to loosen or tighten it.
      And many space limited postions under hood of a car/truck ARE one man operations.

    Well, Hmm when butt welding plate you always bevel the edge to aid in penetration if need be make a second pass to fill the joint the exception would be thin sheet such as a body panel. Also grind the weld area before hand for a clean uncontaminated bead a clean weld is generally going to be a good weld.

    woudnt it have more penetration if you pre heat the plate up to a seartin temperature it can penetrate better

    • @benjaminmoore4592
      @benjaminmoore4592 8 років тому +2

      You could preheat if it is a thicker material. Most of the time you want the welder settings to match the material thickness. I mostly weld steel that is less than quarter inch thick with my everlast so I've never had to preheat. Thicker stuff should really have a bevel at the edges so that penetration will be sufficient. You might also need multiple passes.

      You only preheat thick steel so it won't crack when the heat dissipates fast throughout what you have welded. It more helps with tig anyways.

    Be advised that whenever the power is on, the torch head has a voltage on it and can arc over at any time if metal is nearby. More expensive torches have an on-off foot or hand switch. It's easy to get used to the more expensive torches and forget that this Harbor Freight can arc at any time when the power is on..

      As a fat person I would find a rating system based on fat people pretty beneficial. We often worry about the integrity of structures. If there was a sign saying "Do Not Exceed 3 Fat People" I would be sure not not to add my girth to the structure when 3 other fat people were already mounted. I think it might give piece of mind to the skinny people there as well. It's much easier to just add up the fat people than to try to guess their weights and suss out the math on the fly.

    You can weld any thickness you desire with this machine so long as the joint is properly beveled. I thought you did a good job. Practice makes perfect.

    I saw this video back in 2012. Wound up buying this welder. It is AC but it is reliable as heck. Good video, gives you a good look ate the welder. (Still have it and use it from time to time.)

    I'm not even a novice. In fact, aside from spot welding studs on a bench top machine at work, I never welded anything in my life. I got a coupon for this today and thanks to your vid depicting pretty much exactly the kind of things I would do, and how everything works in layman-friendly terminology, I'm thinking it's probably a buy for me. Aside from that, although I can relate to the number of chubbies jumping on the joints you welded, I still sorta wish you'd have taken a 2lbs hammer to the pipe or gave it a hefty slam on the concrete... just to satisfy my curiosity about the actual strength of a typical weld on appropriate intended material.

    These are a nice starter welder or a welder for auto body. I bought one for 100.00 shipped to me. I use it daily for body panels and 1/4" metals. Only draw back is to use the 10lb. rolls of wire you have to leave the top open or modify the spool to fit in the door. Good welder for getting your feet wet w/o busting the bank.

    i have an older model, used, i just picked it up for $72. It may need a nozzle replacement, but everything else is working fine. only strong welder i have is an old industrial lincoln arc welder with the circular crank and the plastic dial showing the temp, my welding teacher gave it to me for free few years back as a graduation gift, had to replace the ground and electrode holder wires (damn scrappers took the copper) and fix some internal parts. Good as new!

    Thanks for sharing. My coastie son Machinenist/welder told me the same thing about not using it for heavy duty jobs but good enough enough for kind of jobs I need to be doing, like welding a bistro table and making the openings in my wrought iron gate smaller so my Maltese will not escape thru it. Next soc.sec payment will get me one.

    U keep mentioning that u r not a good welder, BUT.... Your welds look a heck of a lot better the. Any of mine. I bought this welder last summer to weld rebar together to make a deer proof surround for my blueberries and strawberries. Bravo! It worked beautifully, and we actually harvested this year. U r a pretty good all around welder..... Just saying. A definite must have for any home garage.

    Love the smell of flux core in the morning. I was thinking about this welder but now have my sights set on one of the powermigs that can take bigger spools and has a bit more power. Those little spools are pretty expensive in comparison.

    Thank you very much for this demo vid. Ive been wanting to purchase this welder to do a simple weld on one side of my radiator support mount because my mechanic wants to charge north of $500 for something that looks so simple. This vid confirms its up to the task of my little job if its welding those big pieces of metal together.
    Best part is I get a neat little welder out of the repair cost:)

    Im used to use a mig welder and just for fun I decided to buy myself a Flux core welder. I was surprised how good that thing works. even on sheet metal workin´on cars. I prposely welded a piece of metal onn an old car of mine wich im gonna junk anyways, purposely didnt prime the area or nothing of that nature. even though that metal is rusted it still holds like the first day I welded it. Yes, I`m convinced of that little welder. Yes, it does a hell of job.

    • @quadflopper1012
      @quadflopper1012 8 років тому +1

      don't beat yourself up over not buying the Lincoln, i think all the Lincoln's have better duty cycles then any of the HF welders. I've been using one of the old blue HF flux core welders for years because it's all i can afford but all my friends have name brand welders like Lincolns, Hobarts, Millers, ect and they can do more with half the hassle i have to go through but part of that is because i push it to do welding jobs that it was never meant to handle, cuz i poor. I go through a lot of wire because I use this little HF welder everyday but would trade it for a Lincoln in a heart beat if i could, wanna trade????....lol
