I remember actually seeing this on TV when I was a kid in New York. We were all speechless that anyone could sing like that. That crowd was legendary for being tough, and she brought down the house.
Everyone talks about the smile but after reading her memoir it’s so much more than “wow the crowd likes me” it’s “wow my entire life I longed so much to connect to my black roots but have always been shamed and abused for it. But they love me, and now I can love me. And no one can take that away”
because Apollo is a tough crowd...it was early in her career and she was still proving herself, she did a lil high note improv right before the second verse and a few extra runs at the end so they could know she could SANG SANG. being mixed looking damn near white sometimes an all black crowd can be intimidating ...her first time here in new Orleans was this summer for Essence and she was nervous but slayed
Respectful intro when she comes on. The Apollo have seen it all so until she hits the whistle they're like 'yeh its all good' then they start the proper standin, noisy appreciation and then she does the runs and then they go wild and know (as only they can) that she is for real and is special, particularly coz she is a young first timer. Nobody can play the Apollo audience. And Mariah knows it.. the smile towards the end proves it.
@@eosornio1558 I was saying........ It's not just that she was going to pause before the "be". She was. As a Half Black singing just really debuting on the music scene, the Apollo Theatre was a BIG DEAL for her. She was nervous being she didn't want the Black audience to see her as a sham, as a "White girl trying to sound Black" or as an overrated singing was was only getting hype because she had "the complexion for the protection". She was nervous because she wanted them to know she was the REAL THING as an R&B artist. Thats why when they responded to her whistle note and the "and it was ALLLL" runs SHE got distracted so mush. She almost smiled and thats why she rushed to the "beeeeeee" note. If you listen to the instrumental, you can tell they weren't going to pause. The music was played straight through
KCMC92 AND i’m saying that’s not true and that sounds like more of an opinion you made up , your own narrative. Her own words on Instagram “I was so overwhelmed and pleasantly surprised by the audience reaction at the Apollo that I almost missed my cue !“ go see it’s from May 15th
3:20 that's the moment. right after The melisma, she is totally satisfied because of crowd's reaction and for a moment she lose the thread in happiness.
I find myself coming back to this performance Time and Time year after year again and again I just love everything about it her presence her essence I was in third grade when this came out and I was so memorized by Mariah Carey I just loved everything about her I remember it was 2 in the morning when this came on I was half sleep watching it but then she hit that vision of love note and it was Mariah Mariah Mariah after that
Right at the 3:27 mark ( her birthday ) she smiles real big from the reaction of the crowd and it sounded like she almost didn’t get the “ to be “ part . This might have Vern the happiest I ever seen her on stage
When she sings the part at the end "and it was all" God Just think how much control it must of taken just to sing the whole line & run through in one clean breath?
Being the perfectionist that she is, it is sad to know the fact that she resorted to lipsyncing 7 years into her career to give the kind of early 90's performance that her fans loved. She shouldn't have overworked those vocals and she would've been very much the Supreme Goddess of Vocals.
Bay Dwi Mariah did her share of lip syncing but you could hardly call her the queen of lip sync with Janet Jackson, Britney Spears and a host of other untalented vocalists running around out here. Calm down with all that. Even Celine Dion and Whitney Houston have mimed performances.
Bay Dwi it is because she sang her heart out during the 90's, and she over worked herself, exposed herself by wearing skimpy outfits , not sleeping enough and the fact that she has nodules as well, anyway, a lot of people in this industry lip sync so why are you so suprised?

3:27 she almost stopped singing to see the audience reaction.. wonderful smile! :)

@@13579hee you’re literally wrong.
She’s confident here, she sounds just like the record and yet can still tell it’s vocally 100% live too ;-)
When I first saw her video for this song, I knew she would be megastar. Unbelievable voice.
This is one of my favorite performances by her, she's so adorable when she looks up at the audience clapping for her 😍

airbag97 it's cute
Vision of love was the perfect introduction to such a legendary career. She deserves all the success she ever had - past and present!!!
That Holy Ghost run at the end is life, death and resurrection
Yessss
The only truly SUPERNATURAL song of modern times imo. Genius.
When the crowd feeds you you can do anything
3:26 OMG! They already love me! Gotta finish the song tho.

"Visions of Love"
There was a time when Mariah was better than Whitney....her swagger was all there
What What LMFAOOOOOO! Absolute hilarity.
She was always better
Well Mariab does have better karate moves with her arms when she sings but otherwise Whitney wins.
@@whfan007 lol
she didn't familiar with lipsync yet at this time! 7 years later she chose herself to become queen of lipsync!

LaCurrone C what does "skimpy outfits" have to do with anything
it has to do with her personality.
He said “Visions” of Love
