    Love that you're sharing the mistakes. I've sewn over 50 years, sometimes quite regularly sometimes not. And you are so correct, when you're out of practice those "stupid" mistakes happen. Stay safe and be well.

    Cute cabin! I do find seam ripping relaxing. Really any opportunity to play with fabric... but ripping has its special zen qualities for sure. Hope life gets back to "normal" soon, but at least you have a temperature-controlled place to be, with family!

      I’m glad to know that you find zen in seam ripping too. My power came back on at 5pm yesterday and we drove back home last night. So I slept in my bed last night and that was awesome ❤️

      @@SewSewLounge to an earlier group conversation about what we can do when we're too tired from the workday to do anything too intense or requiring brainpower to avoid mistakes, seam ripping is one of these things I do. Or the continual re-org of my office/sewing room. There's no place like home!

      I partially take that back. I have stupidly ripped open the wrong seams before :)

  • @TheFeralFarmgirl

    Open up the seam a little. Wedge the seam ripper into the gap so you can see the threads. Push the seam ripper through the threads like you are using an envelope opener, careful not to catch the fabric. Keep the fabric pulled apart at the same time you seam rip. You can seam rip faster that way. Glad you are safe!

    Toni I'm glad that you have a place to stay while your power is out. Good that your trees didn't damage your property. As far as the seam ripper goes, I use it mostly on my muslin with my cheap poly thread. For my final garments I use linen fabric and cotton thread which are both expensive so I aim to minimize my seam ripper usage as much as possible. When I do use my seam ripper on my final garment it's just to make a seam stitch straighter or something minor. I would cry if I had to rip out an entire final garment because it didn't fit right lol. It's not fun doing mockups but it's worth it overall.

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  Місяць тому +1

      I’m starting to realize the benefits of the mock up 🤣 thankfully ripping out this dress is mostly straight seams so it’s going pretty fast. I’m SO thankful the trees didn’t hit my house ❤️

    Hi Toni - I've been wondering how you were doing, given the news on the hurricane. So glad you are safe and had no significant damage. Here in Canada we only had rain at the tail end of the hurricane. Although seam ripping is not much fun, it is nice to have some handwork to do when you can't access your machines or work space. Fortunately they are safe at home and hopefully you will be there again really soon! All the best in the cabin.

    I’m glad you’re okay and the house survived with minimal damage! I love your Aunt’s house, animal heads and all. What a great fireplace. Very Texas! I had a quilter suggest a Clover seam ripper and said they’d had it 20 years and it was still sharp! I bought one, and I will say, that little bugger is definitely really sharp, at least for now. I’ve always heard that textbook was the Bible to follow! I bought one and I made a block from it, but I can’t remember if it came out badly or not. I also followed Chris Sartorial’s instructions for his and I draped one on myself. I guess I’ll have to go back and check it again!

      I will have to check out the Clover seam ripper. I didn’t know it stayed sharp. In all fairness I think I used my seam ripper from college until a couple of years ago 🤣

    Hi Toni, Hope your power is restored soon. Used to live in Texas and in Alabama, so I feel your pain. The infrastructure in certain regions can be a challenge! I saw the video where you sewed this dress and one thing I have noticed is that for most commercial patterns the sizing is off--if I choose a size based on my measurements it's almost always too big. I try to go by finished garment measurements if they are included. Also, I kind of hate facings. If possible I try to use bias binding or a lining to finish necklines and armholes. Kudos to you for ripping out your dress. In my house it would end up in a pile in my attic, though sometimes I do return to it later after I am no longer so frustrated!

    • @SewSewLounge
      @SewSewLounge  Місяць тому +1

      Thankfully the power has been restored and I’m back at home. Apparently they did a patch job on the lines after the ice storm a few years ago and were supposed to fix the lines permanently, which never happened.
      I did look at the finished measurements and decided they were going to be tight. I should have just made it up as is!

    I have a friend in Sugar Land who apparently has power but no internet/phone. Glad you had someplace to go... (Laughed at your reference to UT Austin - my son just graduated from there with his Ph.D. - in paleontology, not fashion design. As far as I know, none of the books his profs used were just actively wrong. He's back in California now, thank goodness. No hurricanes, no humidity.)
