Awesome video....I swear someone is listening....me n hubby were just talking about mushrooms in logs n bam...a video👏👏👏 thks for the great video of course🥰🥰
I had just begun to forage in the woods for mushrooms when my mobility went south due to hip issues. This gives me another way to “forage” for them and the only difference is I will be plugging instead of foraging and it will be right outside my door lol. Thanks bunches for this. I have a perfect spot for placing logs. I can plug and hubby can place them. I hope you both have a great week!
I gave my sister some mushroom spore from Northspore for her birthday this summer.. I think her property would be a great environment to grow them I want to try it myself
Reishi mushrooms looove oak. Its the king medicinal mushroom for longevity and my absolute favorite.,It’s a harder mushroom to grow and takes longer- but if you have oak logs and are adventurous (I think you are) - I’d say give it a try. I’m in California where our coastal oaks are protected so I have to wait for large fallen branches. I just got a few from a patient and I’m getting my spores next week. The log/wood has to sit at least a few months before you inoculate them because the trees produce a chemical that protects the tree from fungus. Mine were cut about 6 months ago so it’s perfect! I order my spores/plugs from Fungi Perfecti. They have reishi & turkey tail (much easier to grow) I got the kit that had the correct drill bit for their plugs. I’m excited to see what you grow. This is truly regenerative farming-nothing goes to waste.
That is why I love watching your vlogs! You try new things and provide encouragement to others to try as well. I needed to finish my raised beds this year, but want to delve into herbs and medicinal plants, bees, worms and mushrooms.
Perfect timing. Son had an oak tree fall in a major storm a few months ago. Dang thing is still hanging on, (green leaves still). His watering system is spraying right on the exposed roots of the tree - (WHOA!). We are getting ready to slice her up. So, I just ordered the shitake kit. Keeping my fingers crossed. And by the way - My honey order came in the other day, and I made homemade biscuits just for the occasion. Let them cool down a bit, slapped some butter and your honey on a biscuit, and I have to say, that this is some of the freshest tasting honey I have had.
We had some Chicken of the Woods growing on an old red oak log. I felt pretty comfortable that it was chicken of the woods but I still wouldn't eat it because I really don't know about mushrooms but this year something that looks identical is growing on an old honey locust log. I like the idea of plugging and knowing what I'm growing. I'm defiantly going to pursue this more.
Good evening Honeystead. Excellent video as always, with superb production values - but that's of course to be expected from a strong self-sufficient woman such as yourself - one who can grow food from scrap logs. I bet those mushrooms are delicious, gently sauteed in some EVOO. Thanks for sharing a vlog of your lovely homestead. Tell your mom I hope she's doing well. Stay strong, safe and confident. 😊 🌻🌻😉
Northspore also has some great kitchen boxes for mushroom growing - They are a one time use, but they are great for an introduction to mushroom growing and harvesting!
After watching this video now i want to eventually try growing some mushrooms. I have some birchwood and ill have to see what other wood i have around. I love trying to grow new vegetables and plants each year.
Good stuff. I recommend North Spore as well, and would encourage anyone curious to watch their channel, and maybe try starting with oysters straw. So simple, and usually successful.
Good morning, Honeystead, Field and Forest out of Wisconsin also has a very informative website and offers many mushroom spawns. Wine caps thermo kill at 90 F so they will shut off mid summer and begin again in the fall. 6-8" diameter oak logs will produce well for 4-6 years. Moisture management is key. If you are trying to force fruit Shiitakes you might not wax the ends because it will slow the water absorption. Compost Happens, let it rot, eat more mushrooms. Peace
We tried years ago to grow some mushrooms but were unsuccessful. I would love to try again. We love to forage for mushrooms but around the property very little grows that is for eating. Your mom said it - you do have to try. When I first started growing some herbs - I wanted Lavender but it was a struggle. Three years after trying I finally grew some and continue to grow it each year now. My parents always said I was mule headed and did not like it when something did not work out for me so I would just keep trying.
So exciting to see you doing this ! I just started learning too on how to do them on logs also …great video I’m gonna do wine caps around my tree and can’t wait to see what comes !
I just found your channel and am so glad I did!! Yall are living my dream. Right now we are looking at a property and are praying that we'll be able to start our homesteading journey this fall. I have several autoimmune diseases and feel like growing our food, being more self sufficient and controlling what's going in and on our bodies, I will be able to heal. I have been studying herbalism and grew up on a farm. I look forward to binging on your video. 🥰🥰
Welcome! I pray your dreams will come true and starting where you are is most important… even if it is something small, it is still a start! I have lovely friends that homestead on a .25 acre!!!
@@TheHoneystead I totally agree with starting where you are. We have some poultry and rabbits for eggs and meat. I have a decent size garden and just spent the day wildcrafting for the first time. I had a wonderful time and have hung all the herbs I collected in and out of my garden. I can't wait to learn more about harvesting wild mushrooms and am looking for an experienced guide in my area.
What is the purpose of topping the plugs with Wax? A few years ago we had a lion's mane/sheep's head mushroom growing on a dying white oak. It weighed about 2 pounds, and tasted great sliced and sauteed in oil and garlic. The following year another smaller one came back, but I left it on the tree too long, thinking it would grow larger, but it didn't. Unfortunately, by the time I picked it, it was past prime.
Could you link the video to the WV mushroom class that you took with your mom and sister? I watched it, but can’t find it and my niece is wanting to farm mushrooms and wanted to watch. Love love love your channel! You are living my dream!!
How far away from Floyd VA are you? I’d love to set up a appt for visit and learn about bees and see your apothecary. My dream is to build our own apothecary and I’m slowly designing our food forest for food and medicine. We will be picking up our yurt from Blue ridge yurts next April and if you weren’t to far from Floyd it would be an honor to meet you and your mom.
Is it easy to regrow these the next year? I guess my question is, how do you propagate these? With corn, I keep some corn and plant it the next year, we with sweet potatoes I make we slips from sweet potatoes. How do you do that with these?
What is the northspore discount code? I don’t see it. I was about to order from them when I saw your video. I would love to use your affiliate link and get a little discount if possible🍄🌱💚
Thank you I believe that if you use the code HONEYSTEAD it may give you a discount. I am keeping a close eye on discounts so that I know when to share and buy more for myself lol! I definitely want to try to grow more here!!!
Red maple has allelopathic properties that are strong, wait a few weeks. Most other wood species you can inoculate within a week. The issue with waiting is that competing mushrooms can move in. If you cut your logs long, then you can cut the ends shorter to get rid of and possible contamination and dry wood if your logs have sat around for a while.. Moisture management is key. Good luck, Brice
If your logs have been cut for a while, you can soak before inoculation. The issue with logs that have been cut and sitting around for a while is competing mushrooms will move in and you won't get as good a colonization with your preferred species.
Thank you!🍄🐞🍄🐝
Mom said it correct. You'll never know if your good at something until you at least try. Failure is part of life. Failure is part of growing.
It is also the art of staying humble 💛
i LOVE your mother!!!!!!!!
💛💛💛
Awesome video....I swear someone is listening....me n hubby were just talking about mushrooms in logs n bam...a video👏👏👏 thks for the great video of course🥰🥰
Ohhhh definitely do it!!! I’m actually planning to do A LOT more soon!!!
Moisture management is key, you will have to water them if they do not receive 1" of rain a week
Looks very interesting...go for it Ladies.
Great reminder! Thank you for sharing your experience. :)
Dad’s squirrel hunting buddy used to bring us hen of the woods mushrooms. Nice meaty mushroom.
Thanks for your videos 😊
Just ordered my Shiitake Plugs and wax. Can't wait to start drilling. Thank you.
I grew Wine Cap from North Spore this last year. They are amazing, excellent place to start. I hope this goes well for you.
Had to come check out the plugging video after seeing today's video.... Congrats!!! ♡

Super cool !!
Love it when you and your mom work together. Awesome
I gave my sister some mushroom spore from Northspore for her birthday this summer.. I think her property would be a great environment to grow them
I want to try it myself
You can use a jar ring under your jar to melt the wax
It helps though to have access to an essential, viable and also ethical resource like the hardwood in order to make mushrooms. That I don't have.

Your mom is so beautiful
I think I am in love.
i like north spore i made a mulch bed with their winecap mushrooms and i was eating some in just about two months
That’s awesome!

Inspirational @least...almost unbelievably So.
Love these videos. They are not only informative and educational, but therapeutic.

Looking forward to seeing what develops. I've been interested in possibly doing that. Love your mom. She is always positive.
I was thinking about growing mushrooms! Perfect timing. Thank you for your wisdom.

Can’t wait to see your follow up videos
That was such a fun day! Can’t wait to get the rest of the mushrooms inoculated or setting up the rest. We shall be fun…gals……

Thanks for the link… like you, I’m jumping in!!!
thanks so very much for the information, and video. hope you all have a great harvest, and a wonderful week.
If you mix some mineral oil with your wax it will spread easier
Get ahold of my brother at Black hills mushrooms. Also does kits.

You two are going to get me into more projects than I can handle lol! I'm so glad you made this video! I've been curious about it for a long time.
Lol sorry not sorry:)
😂 well … we have a huge list of things we are wanting to do… it never ends. It’s all a labor of love.

Just a question: shouldn't the logs have been soaked in water prior to drilling and plugging the spores?
What kind of wax are you using? Is it natural bees organic wax or can other waxes be used?
Can you put them is logs that have been cut down for a while?
Red maple has allelopathic properties that are strong, wait a few weeks. Most other wood species you can inoculate within a week. The issue with waiting is that competing mushrooms can move in. If you cut your logs long, then you can cut the ends shorter to get rid of and possible contamination and dry wood if your logs have sat around for a while.. Moisture management is key. Would a pallet be ok to lay your logs on ?
Did you soak them in water first before plugging them .?
❤❤❤
Ehehe 👍
So is that the only planting time…fall?
for you to put on the mill? I thought your husband did that
👍👋🏼
I thought you had to soak the logs in water and let them cure prior to inoculation? This is not true?
We used fairly fresh tree limbs that still had a little moisture in them, so from what I was taught… no :)
If your logs have been cut for a while, you can soak before inoculation. The issue with logs that have been cut and sitting around for a while is competing mushrooms will move in and you won't get as good a colonization with your preferred species.
I'm very interested jn this kind 0f farming god bless
Lol!!! I love mushrooms and I’m not a big fan of weeding my garden so I think this might be the perfect thing for me 🙃
are the animals eating your bounty?
