  • I don't know who's pet cause the single use plastic ban was, but it's in line with the rest of the anti-human, anti-progress and anti-convenience BS that's taken over what passes for modern thinking.
    That one time when I have to turn around to drive back 20Km to get the reusable bags I forgot to bring more than equals a decade of plastic bag use.
    The absurdity is that they do this and the misinformed public think that it's saving the planet. Here, in Canada! The entirety of population of the landmass labelled as Canada could cease to exist tomorrow and it would have a completely insignificant effect on the environment, present and future. We are just punishing ourselves with the narcissistic delusion that we matter.
    I made a comment in a recent video on my audio channel about Star Trek: TNG (I'm re-watching it) and said that the bright future portrayed in that show was a lie. The future envisioned in that series was based on an attitude that comes out of the forward thinking, future and progress loving 50's and 60's. Since then we've completely gone off the rails and are headed for a much bleaker future.
    Imagine how many windmills and solar panels and electric cars you could make from the materials that go into building a galaxy class star ship.
    Antimatter engines??? Not in My backyard!
    Phasers and photon torpedoes??? Gun lover! Ban weapons and embrace equity, diversity and inclusivity!! Let the Borg take you without a fight! Fighting is bad and quite obviously racist, so just give up! You'll be happier when what's left of the little bit of thinking you do for yourself has been taken away.

    Where I'm at, Washington State, the state put on an 8 cents per bag price. Walmart, then didn't want to charge 8 cents for their usual thin bags as they would look offensively over priced. So they substituted new thick bags--- very thick. So the environmentalist goal was defeated... counterproductive.

    If you don't use the plastic grocery sacks then you have to be organized enough to bring other sacks with you. Some US states have started charging for the bags too so when I visit there I have to remember to bring along my own bag. I used those grocery sacks for trash but also I would put my lunch in them to take to work. Well now we're all working from home so maybe that doesn't matter.
    Another thing that went away- newspaper. I used to have plenty of newspaper around to wrap things in, lay down when I'm working on something dirty, spread out for painting, use as masking for painting, etc. Now I don't have newspaper for that.

    Please don’t change or stop your rants! They are fine and we tune in because your combination of things keeps us interested and allows us to visit you when we really cannot do it face to face.
    We too have had such a ban and we used to reuse bags as well. Our solution has been to buy many reusesbles so we almost cannot forget them. We then find ways to reuse those new bags for other tasks as well. And where as I used to have 10 bags digging into my hands when I get home from shopping, the better handles of 4 reuseables are much better. And yes, I have to buy other plastic bags. But I blame the darned slobs who for years could not be bothered with throwing anything in the trash and leaving these old single use bags everywhere! They ruined things for everyone! But my town actually is a bit cleaner without those bags all over!

    Everyone that I know had a second use for these plastic bags. In my country (in EU), you can still buy them at the cashier's along with alternative "bio-degradable" and reusable bags. There is an exception - you can still get them for free for bagging vegetables and fruits - though effort is being made to remove these aswell.
    I've seen many people taking tens of these bags from the vegetable & fruits area and over at the self-service cashier's (these are common in our country) and stuffing them in their pockets.
    I've been using a textile bag I got from a relative (as a sponsor material from her company) for the past decade. I find it more convenient as it's stronger and bigger. It does not reduce my carbon footprint though as I have to buy plastic bags for my trash.

    As one who only recently began tuning in to your rants, I appreciate them! It's amazing how much regression can happen in the name of progress. I buy thousand pack boxes of those bags that we used to be given for free off Amazon for around $20. They last a long time and I got black color bags so people won’t see my bathroom garbage. I use them for shopping and for picking up after my dog.

    • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Рік тому +3

      I may do that and leave the box in my van. That way, even I have reusable bags, I won't have to turn around and scurry back (or buy more of them in the store) if I forget them.
      But then again I already have at least a couple of hundred of the shopping bags they are outlawing, so I'll just stuff those in a box to use.

    I think something like 0.02% of global plastic pollution belongs to Canada. Ie plastics in the environment, not a landfill. They claimed to do this to save 1 million tons of what they call "hard to recycle" single use plastic from going into landfills. But grocery bags aren't single use for most of us, and aren't hard to recycle, either. Hdpe and ldpe are relatively easy to recycle, so much so that the avg Joe can do it at home with a diy extruder and press if they were motivated enough. People just don't recycle them. Why? Most of us give them a second use as garbage bags so we don't have to buy ACTUAL single use bags, or leaky boot liners, or whatever tf our imaginations come up with. The feds later admitted that the ban will actually add another >3 million tons of waste to the landfills annually while burdening other industries and compounding other problems. It makes 0 sense. But it wasn't supposed to. It was just more virtue signaling because they don't know how to do anything other than manipulate ignorant people. But what do I know? I'm just that fence-sitting centrist libertarian that everyone loves to hate. Paper bags make good fire starter though 🤷‍♂

So a couple things you can try is: Take a break from it for a while and see if you miss it at all. If it turns out that you miss getting stuff off your chest, try publishing a couple with comments turned off. See how well that balances the pros and cons.

    Is it thinking for yourself, or is it an ability to think? The problem isn't that people are necessarily brainwashed into what to think (although that happens on both sides of everything). The problem is that human beings, for the most part, have difficulty thinking. We just aren't as smart as we hope to be. So we overreact to things and cut off our nose to spit our face. While some things might get in your craw, the reality is, or better, the challenge is to not let those things get to you and persevere anyway.

There's a lot of money to be made in "green and environment friendly" mandates. It's an emotionally driven ideology which makes it easy to manipulate the emotionally governed. The plastic bag ban is just virtue signaling from the usual suspects. • @IBuildItScrapBin
      @IBuildItScrapBin  Рік тому

      You use the word "probably", which suggests you are not sure. If you are actually not sure, why do you make such definitive statements? Wouldn't it be better to do some research on the subject rather than making assumptions, and then stating those assumptions as facts?
      You see resources as finite and that they will eventually run out, and we will have to make do with less. But that's a narrow view of how we progress. We innovate and invent new ways of doing things. That's why we aren't all starving to death today, even though as little as 20 years ago there were well respected scientist that were predicting mass famines due to over-population.
      But when you start putting limits on what we can do as a species, then you stifle innovation. You shut down progress.
      It's no mystery why we had a huge explosion of invention, innovation and as a result progress on every front (in particular quality of life) just three hundred years ago. It was freedom on a scale not seen before in history and with that freedom the drive to work to make life better.

      @@IBuildItScrapBin I try not to get political on these answers, however there are forces at work that will send our progress backwards. One such way is the "save the planet" scam. A bunch of people who think they are smarter than the "common" man, however less intelligent they are, are trying to run our lives. The more they push the narrative, the less rights we have. Too bad Britain was such a sore loser. By the way, we aren't starving to death today because of chemicals, the same ones responsible for illnesses we can't cure. I'm glad I bought land years ago, and can live on it as I want. Just my thoughts, not pushing any agenda, religion or idea. Who is John Galt!

    The single use bags were banned around here in my town. Unfortunately that took away my dog poop bags. So I go onto ebay and buy a box of 1,000 of them for like $20. Suck it hippies!
