- For today's review, I'm going to take a look at another beer from the Lagunitas Brewing Company, and it's their Maximus (Colossal IPA). This is a Double IPA that is brewed with Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial hops. It's been a long time since I've had this one -- at least seven years -- so I thought I'd grab a can of this and give it a go. It's not the freshest can, but you can't always get what you want, so let's see how this one is!
Commercial Description:
Maximus is our Colossal take on a Double IPA. 9% ABV. Full of Simcoe, Cascade and Centennial hops balanced against tons of rich malted barley -- a bed of smooth malted wheat, biscuity Munich malt, and English Crystal. Maximus' massive dry-hop bill entertains with spice, floral and berry notes ... For the hop heads!

Thanks for watching!
Beautiful beer. The finish is like toasty creme brule. Alcohol is very well hidden. Upfront is bright and not the grapefruit sour bomb of most IPAs. Walks the line from being too sticky and dank. Cheers!
Glad you dug it, too! Definitely an awesome beer. I do feel like it's pretty well-balanced, for sure.
Cheers!
I gotta say, I picked up a 12 pack of this recently and the reason this beer works for me is that even though its 9% abv of a notoriously hoppy and bitter style, it seems easier to drink and thats why I like it. Its perfectly balanced for the style.
Awesome to hear, Chaz! I definitely think this is a good one for 9% ABV. There's quite a few from Lagunitas that I enjoy that are bigger ABV, as well.
Cheers, man!
I’ve never had this. I’ve had to seen it around at some point over the years. Sounds like a decent old school, easy drinking IPA for 9%. Great review Joe. Cheers!
For sure, Jay. For an old school-style beer, I really dig this one. Definitely a bit old, but still held up. Thanks again, dude!
Cheers!
Purchased at my local Whole Foods for $2.29 for a 19.2 oz. can. At 9% and 60 IBU's this beer did not disappoint. Canning was on 04/17/23 so it had about the same age as yours. My review really mirrors yours. I do drink many more N.E. style IPA's in my present situation; yet it hard to lose touch with the older style west coast ipa. I cut my teeth on Sixpoint Resin, Green Flash Palate Wrecker and Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. Overall this beer has really held up well with minimum hop fade. My rating on Untapp'd is 4.25 up from 4 the last time i tried it in 2022.
Glad you enjoyed it, Michael! Definitely one of those classic WCDIPAs. I tend to lean towards NEIPAs, as well, but all it has done for the WCIPA style is make me enjoy them more. I think the lack of bitterness in NEIPAs has allowed my palate to appreciate it in other styles. I wish GF Palate Wrecker was still available. Such an awesome beer!
Cheers, buddy!
So good with a burger 🍔 & fries 🍟
I can definitely see that, Michael!
Cheers, dude!
I’m so tired of all the haze bro DIPAs. This is one of my faves. Love West Coast DIPAs. Great review.
While I still enjoy me a good Hazy DIPA/NEDIPA, I try to mix up what I drink and review all the time. Love beers like this nowadays. All about variety for me. I could never drink nothing but haze. It's awesome mixing in different styles. Glad you dig this one! Definitely a fantastic beer. Now, if we could get Lagunitas to bring back Lagunitas Sucks!
Cheers, Christopher!
On point with the marmalade taste seriously💯
Thanks, Matthew! I love me some orange marmalade, so I'm always happy when I pick up on that tasting note.
Cheers!
To me, this tastes like Paulaner Salvator doppelbock with a West Coast hop bill.
I could see that, for sure. Definitely has a big malt bill. Tasty beer, though.
Cheers!
For it's style best beer for the price
It's definitely up there. Great beer, for sure.
Cheers, Reed!
Been drinking this for like 10 years now, the old version was pretty bitter/hoppy and the newer one is very smooth with a twinge of hops
Yeah, I do think the older bottles I had back 7+ years ago was more bitter. This was a bit more balanced, albeit leaning to the bitter side of things. I prefer the can I had to the old bottles, only because I like a bit more of a balance. That said, you aren't the first to mention it, so I definitely think you're right about it being different. Did you still enjoy it? Thanks for the comment!
Cheers!
I definitely prefer the old version. Colossal is less bitter, more balanced.
Thanks for sharing, Brent! Seems like many folks agree with you.
they dont sell the maxiums anymore?
According to their website, this is year-round.
Thought this was a well done beer. Nice full flavor. Was kinda bored, with it though. Back when you had it, years ago, it was just called Maximus at 8%. A couple years ago, they ended Maximus, and created Maximus Colossal at 9%. The original Maximus was very low flavor.
I enjoyed it for what it is. Yeah, I don't recall much about specifics when it comes to this one back in the day, all I know is I wasn't a huge fan of it just because I didn't really like IPA/DIPAs back then.
Cheers, dude!
Going to my favorite semi local beer store and I'm going to see if they have it. Maybe fresher cheers 🍻
I would imagine you could get definitely get it fresher, Billy. Heck, I probably could get it fresher, but just grabbed it despite the age because that's what shelfie beer reviews are all about, brother!
Cheers, man!
it's a pretty good beer - not the world class of the NEIPA's but damn good
Yeah, it's hard to compare this one to NEIPAs because they're so vastly different, but this is definitely tasty. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Cheers!
I've only ever seen bottled Lagunitas Maximus (and the standard one) here, this is my first time seeing the can lol. Granted I live in a small city so American IPA's are a bit rarer here, great review though! Love to the US from Sweden :)
Love back to Sweden from the US! It's pretty cool you can get some American craft beer, even in a smaller city in Sweden. I've only seen bottles of this in the past too, so the can surprised me, as well. It was still tasty, though! Thanks for sharing, and I appreciate the comment!
Cheers!
@@averagejoe716 Thanks bud! Yeah the state runs the alcohol stores here (you can only buy alcohol over 3.5% at these stores) but they come with a nice range for what it's worth! Thanks again for you vid and reply! And it definitely is tasty still! A solid IPA
Another Swedish viewer just told me that on another video, which is wild. Some similar stuff happens in particular Canadian provinces, specifically Ontario. I'm only 20 minutes away from the Canadian border, and I've shopped for beer up there, and they have specific stores for their alcohol sales, although recently (in the past 10 years), some grocery stores are allowed to sell alcohol, too. It's awesome you have a great selection, though. Nothing worse than having all the alcohol controlled by the state and the selection stinks, haha!
I live in California and have only ever seen bottles too
I only remember the bottles, so the cans have to be relatively new to some degree, IMO.
The last time I had that one was last year when it came back (in bottles) and as for most of the Lagunitas double IPAs from the past couple of years, it was good but couldn't tell the difference between it and something like recent Undercover. You should do a Maximus & Double Dale's comparison though. Cheers !
Dude, I was so pumped for Double Dale's, and then it finally showed up, and the cans were literally four months old. Pissed me off. Really wanted to try that. I could see that with Lagunitas offerings, honestly. Almost similar to how Hazy IPAs start to become increasingly similar at some breweries.
Cheers, Sadek!
Tried this beer this summer, couldn’t believe it. 12 pack is 20 bucks in my NY neck of the woods, and for 9% and the flavor, it’s a no brained. I’ve seen this beer get trashed but I love it. Glad you feel the same!
Yeah, it's a great beer! Most folks I talk to really enjoy it, so I'm happy you do, as well. Hard to beat the value on most beers from Lagunitas.
Cheers, man!
just bought a 12 for 16.99 before tax in VA :)
@@leftsidedrive_1255 3 bucks cheaper before tax in NY and I’m sure taxes are cheaper in Virginia! lol
What happened to Lagunitas SUCKS?
I wish I knew, man! That is a classic beer and I haven't seen it in year. Probably my favorite hop-forward beer from Lagunitas. I hope they bring it back someday.
Cheers, again!
As far as I can see (*when I had it*) it's a must for like a good reason like a toast, buddy
Yeah, this would be great for a toast! In fact, to celebrate any occasion!
Cheers!
