It is, though. It provides comfort, and you don’t feel like cooking when you are grieving. We in the south are known for banding together and feeding the bereaved. It is part of comforting grief and showing someone you care.

Im 63 from Tx and never witnessed this but my mother told me they used to clean and dress their dead and leave them in the house for people to come pay their respects.
Thats true. They sure did. I lived in Mississippi & Arkansas, and Uncle 'Fester" was in the picture window like a Christmas tree decoration!!! :)
I remember going to 2 or 3 of them when I was young, back in the 70's.
I remember my pawpaw said when he was growing up people would take turns sitting up at night with the dead
