- In this snippet I discuss the related Textual Variants in Matthew 17:21 and Mark 9 concerning fasting when it comes to casting out demons. Should we side with the Critical Text reading which removes FASTING from these passages, or should we stick with the Byzantine Text and Received Text readings on these passages. Although no "Cardinal Doctrines" are effected by textual variants, the teaching surrounding casting out demons seems to be impacted fairly substantially on fasting for exorcisms.

When one believes the author of this verse was Jesus and knows His lifestyle was concreted, the context means more than not eating a meal. It means total dedication and connection to God.

Love this! I felt called to fast before Easter this year but didn't know why. During the fast, I sought scripture on fasting to better understand it. All the scripture was from the King James...I was so floored about it not being in my ESV...guess my call to fast was the call to dive deeply into God's Word. I have been learning so much about the entire issues with modern translations. I am grateful for you bringing this topic up.
It's interesting, because you looked at the NASB 2020 edition (which only has Matthew 17:21 in the footnotes), whereas the 1977 and 1995 editions do have Matthew 17:21 in the main body of the text, but in brackets.
Right, and 'in brackets' means the committee doesn't think it's original. Now I don't think the NASB is a "BAD" translation per se, but I believe that passage is part of the Bible and should be in there.

From one of your other videos, I got the 17 verses that were excluded from the critical text and as I began to go through them, on this particular verse I said to myself, even if it was never part of Matthew, it was God-breathed in Mark 9:29. So I asked myself, is it still true? That’s good enough for me. Now “fasting” I’m not sure, but better safe than sorry.

You mentioned the split line. Read textual comments on split lines. They're linked in the online version. In this case the aged editors stuck with Aland and the younger whippersnappers wanted to include fasting....
As David Palmer very recently pointed out and others have done before, no one fasts in this context but someone does pray and the prayer is answered.
I agree with you Dwayne on this one big time. Fasting is a huge deal and the fact that the Critical Text does not have this is concerning. Example A of why I dont lean to any one family of manuscripts. I think the CT has its issues as well as the TR inserting a quite a bit of Latin. Because of this, I can see why you lean toward the Byzantine Priority. I am glad however, my NLT does footnote these verses so I can read them. Blessings!!
Could it be that, rather than being omitted by 0.3% manuscripts dating from the 4th century, it could have been a 5th century emendation, multiplied in the 10th-12th century whence the 99.7%?
The NAS'20 doesn't have vs 21, but the NAS'95 and LSB does.
Geneva bible says prayer and fasting too.
Geneva bible is also based on the same manuscripts as KJV-the Textus Receptus
@@ronester1 exactly. Only more so for geneva bible. King james copied chapter and verse style, but changed many of genevas greek words to catholic words. But the kjv is closest to geneva than other versions.
@JAHtony1111 Lately, I've been looking for other Reformation Protestant Era bibles for this very reason. Check out the October Testament, also called New Matthew Bible it's based on the Matthew Bible, another TR based bible printed in the 1500s.
I still like reading the KJV and NKJV because it's a classic but when I need to use a different version I'm really turned off by the modern Bible's using the critical text as their basis and so many verses missing much like was mentioned in this video.
Using Jesus, the author of the text as our example, fasting certainly applies to a consecrated life, not just missing a meal.
Any thoughts on the 1Cor. 7:5 “and fasting” variant in relationship to “and fasting” in Mark 9:29?
Seems odd that fasting is getting the ✂️. Wondering if 1Cor. 7:5 has a strong majority text witness.

Burgon (14) p 91, 206 states that every extant uncial except Aleph and B and every extant cursive except one contain the verse. Of the versions, the Old Latin, Syriac, Coptic, Armenian, Georgian, Ethiopic and Slavonic attest to the verse, with only the Curetonian Syriac and Sahidic omitting it. He cites additional ancient authorities including: 2nd Century: Tertullian; 3rd Century: Origen; 4th Century: Ambrose, Athanasius, Augustine, Basil, Chrysostom, Hilary, Juvencus; 8th Century: Clement of Syria, John Damascene.
Burgon also cites the Syriac version of the Canons of Eusebius and the readings of the entire Eastern Church on the l0th Sunday after Pentecost from the earliest period, in favour of the verse. Berry's Greek text supports this passage. Bing search

16:43 Dwayne, don't downplay this issue and commit the same error they are committing here. 2 Peter 2.1-3 gives the identifying features of false teachers. It does not say that all or most of their teachings will be false or that they won't preach mostly the truth. It says they will introduce damnable heresies that others will take up for themselves and follow their ways to perdition. BE CAREFUL!
