"Little Joe and his friend Mitch chase a sheep-killing puma into a canyon and Joe climbs a steep slope to get a better look at the terrain. When he slips, dropping his rifle into a rock crevice, Joe is suddenly paralyzed with fear. Mitch calls to him and Joe manages to climb down, but without his rifle. Ashamed, Joe tells no one of his experience and when his attempts to retrieve his rifle fail in panic, Joe's pent-up frustration causes him to behave recklessly. Acting like he was sliding down the slope to scare Little Joe out of his phobia and grab the gun was a stroke of genius on Ben's part.
This episode was about PTSD... Of course, during that time period it wasn't acknowledged - or recognized, not until many, many decades later. This is what Little Joe was dealing with and making him act out of character. This show was way ahead of it's time - in how it dealt with different issues.

Great acting of Michael Landon and Lorne Greene. What a duo!
Phobias or fears are a real thing, but never let them consume you or take up your whole life. You end up pushing people away, especially your loved one and best friends that you could lose for good. By the time you see your mistake they could be long gone. This episode even taught me something important; that as a man it's not a bad thing to express your feelings and to be scared. We've just grown up in a society that expects us to always be the tough guys who never shed a tear. Where as In reality, you can't help how you feel and there's no need to have a macho man ego except be yourself

Some of us just plain have to live with the fact that there are some fears we just have to live with. It doesn't make you a coward, just realistic about what we can do.
Outa, listen to the song what it's like to be a man by dax. It's hard to be a man in todays western society.
One time I was 43 years old and got stuck on a part of a mountain in the California Sierras. I was scared shittless and cried like the biggest baby you could ever see something happened to my mind at that moment. We had to go back down the mountain and I just concentrated on getting down! once I was down I was very humbled! no ego bullshit!
Probably an anxiety attack. :( They are humbling.

Michael Landon delivered a lot of great performances on Bonanza. The best episodes were the ones that focused on Little Joe.

Psychology. Was becoming a new area of study, phobias/ fear of heights, claustrophobia, fear of closed small areas, which I have. The gentle, smart way Ben handled it was perfect. Ben remembered Joe as a young boy being fearful stuck up at eagles nest. Some fathers may belittle their child, but Ben knew, that was not the answer for Joe's mental fear. It reminds me of the old saying about getting back up on the horse if it throws you. 🐴🐴🐴 I love and enjoy this show so much! It tells of the problems of human life and REAL, honest ways to resolve the conflict. 👍💖 It is crucial for children to watch and I really hope adults are taking advantage of it, like at daycare centers, watch and discuss 😍🤔 🐴🐮🐾💯
Another beautiful story. What a great role for Michael Landon. A parent will always be behind his child. Lorne Greene gave a best performance as a Father to a son.
Another great episode, I’d like part when Joe figure it out that Ben was trying to help him. It is ok to be afraid of things, even though you are all grown up you can never be to old to be afraid. I love how Ben try to stay calm and reasonable to Joe. Those two are the best father and son. 👍🏻👍🏻😎☺️

"Pride goeth before a fall." How hard it was to prove your manhood in those less enlightened times. Michael Landon turned in an award winning performance - simply outstanding. As always, Ben as a father guides his son with his deep wisdom. We could never produce a show like this today.
Oh my gosh how true! The solution was handled with love and understanding on Ben's part. Today people pay hundreds of dollars an hour to discuss phobias with a psychiatrist. An area of study that was just coming into the light.

I think the reason that is because we no longer have the judeo-christian values that people have. Still have them but they're stuffed under a rock somewhere and they're not allowed to really be free so people could be exposed
We really once had a standard of doing the right thing and that really was because of Christian principles. Mercy in particular is not a universal trait that all cultures have in fact it's quite the opposite.
Was because Christ out of the concept of Mercy was introduced. For those of you who are going to start talking about China and their teachings while that doesn't work because the ancestor of China was the son of Shem. That would be Noah's son his son 16 generations.

There were other people that were spared most likely in different areas. At the time the world had not formed the way it is today.

@@maryannswanson3832 There's no need to spend hundreds of dollars to get over a phobia. I had 2 strong phobias. One was of heights after I fell off the edge of the cliff at the top of the Grand Canyon in the early 1970s and the other one was of all dogs after a horrible experience with a dog when I was a little girl. I'm 90% over my phobia of heights and about 95% over my phobia of midsized and large dogs. I'm not afraid of small dogs anymore. I faced my phobias without going to any psychiatrist. It's the best way.
Joe, in many ways those times were MORE enlightened than now. I believe we have lost more than we've gained since those days.
Great episode of how to deal with overcoming fears which am sure alot of people would be too proud to even admit.

We often remark how much we learn from these episodes...lessons in psychology and interacting with people. I think we all look at Ben as a very wise and lovingly firm father.

No way was he a child.Most have fears of some kind & if u can come to terms or overcome them,you are a star.For me,though I am good with natural heights,ladders freak me out & unfortunately I have to climb up to do things like opening the kitchen window.

Phobias or traumas are real. This was an excellent depiction. Michael Landon acted superbly in this episode.
Michael Landon playing emotional parts has certainly improved. Loved him in this. Dan Blocker plays Hoss so naturally now and Ben's "speech" to Little Joe, with that big booming voice, priceless 😎

I like Ben a lot. Been watching so many of these Bonaza so much lately that I've been thinking of Battle Star Galactica because Lorne Green was such a great Patriarch in that series also. Funny how a Western made me think of Sci-fi.

I know many have argued that Ben acts too fatherly to his sons who are old enough to make there own decisions. However I think now a days as I’ve seen being a preschool teacher, there are many parents who either ignore the issues going on with their children or deny. It’s refreshing to see that Ben kept asking what was wrong and he does care. Parents need to know what’s going on with their kids (not be controlling but also not completely ignore) children will benefit in the long run as they know that their parents care for them. Especially if they’re older they may not appreciate it but in time they will. So parents ask what’s going on with your child at school, or what they are with their friends and you will be blessed for it.

I've seen dozens of episodes and read hundreds of comments and NEVER have I seen ANYONE say that Ben is "too fatherly". As if there could even be such a thing.
@@AndrewVelonis yeah i don’t agree with the “too fatherly” comments from what I read these comments were mostly on UA-cam videos on why Pernell roberts stopped playing Adam (and those who were fans of Adam’s character who were sad to see him leave) He didn’t like Bens character being too fatherly for his character being late 20’s he thought his character shouldn’t always go run to daddy when he faces problems.
I named my younger son after lorne Greene, he was a great influence.
@KillerAngel it seems Pernel did not understand the unique nature of the characters of the show. All 3 sons lost their mothers at a young age. Their father lost 3 wives. Necessity and those circumstances would causs him to be a very sympathetic, loving caring, and concerned father. The show waa not his creation. His problem waa one of arrogance according to the creators. He was hired to be an actor.
I went completely blind temporarily once because of fear of heights! It was crazy!

I hate heights. I went solo parachuting once. Loved it! I still hate heights.
Those saying he's acting ridiculous are missing the whole point. Hes trying to prove to himself that he's not a coward. Which is why at the very beginning they made such a big deal about the arm wrestling challange and Joe said he had nothing to prove...that was obviously done to set the tone for the entire show. Now he does have something to prove but hes ashamed of himself for being afraid.

@@CathyKitson On the contrary… the first episode I ever watched was with actor Ossie Davis “The Wish”. Season 10 Episode 23. Became hooked after that (my daddy was a proud black man that reminded me very much of Ben Cartwright, it was one of his favorite shows). The principles in the show are universal and their wisdom “timeless”, they are also refreshing and nostalgic. Check out “The wish”… powerful episode acknowledging the injustices of the time (the very definition of woke). Cheers!

I'm liberal - but definitely not woke - and BZ largely works for me. I do curl my toes at their treatment of women sometimes, but not so much that I stop watching.
As a leftist, yes, there's lots of "toxicity" in bonanza, an outdated whitewashed western. But there's a lot of progressive messaging as well.

I found out that the best way by far to get over a phobia is to face it! I had very strong phobias of heights and of dogs. I faced both phobias head on. I'm 90% over my phobia of heights and I'm 95% over my phobia of midsized and large dogs. I'm not afraid of small dogs anymore.

I'd love to watch this all the way through, l but honestly it's way too reminiscent of my own anxieties and it's giving me serious second-hand-embarrassment. I'm about a third of the way through and I've loved what I've seen, Michael Landon did some good work.

Robert Biheller, who plays Ken in this episode, had a cool role as a psycho biker named Beavo in an episode of The Fugitive. His character terrorizes Lieutenant Gerard's wife after she was in a bus accident, when she was temporarily blind. Biheller played a really good psycho heavy.

@@CathyKitson Yup, Joe, who always helps guide others who struggle, is a 10 year old in this episode. He doesn't have the maturity to handle what he sees as a personality flaw. By keeping his fears to himself and not opening up to get some input from his brothers or his Pa, he keeps struggling. A lot of adults act like they are 10 years old, I've been guilty of that myself (LOL).

Not so much when I need help, but sometimes when I can't get my own way - you feel like flinging yourself on the floor and throwing a tantrum! :D What was worse in this was Joe's nastiness. It was totally out of character for him. As I told you, I adore him and he was suffering, but he made everyone around him suffer, too. Not nice!! I'd have felt like boxing his ears LOL.

I've never seen Hoss tame a horse, he always gets stopped at the last moment and anyway I don't think a horse would be able to jump with Hoss on its back!

What's mystifying about this episode is that the rock ISN'T. EVEN. THAT. STEEP. I mean, for goodness' sake, they couldn't find something a little scarier than this mountain for such a dramatic story?! The way he struggles to climb - on his hands and knees! - a non-treacherous, relatively-gentle slope he could easily run up... Why?
That is not the way you train a horse. Done properly, the horse will never learn how to buck.
A rifle as a stick, without checking if there is any ammunition left: pretty dangerous.
Thanks for sharing. Sadly, not an episode I rate highly, despite Landon's competent performance. Some loose ends, notably re the pal who Little Joe beats at arm wrestling. Pity Pernell misses this episode altogether
