I think the main reason can also be greed not just for money but also for power...
Noone knew who they were fighting for, they only knew what they were fighting for
And everyone who got a chance to have a taste of power eventually took it and exploitation continued.
Also I wonder what happens in a society when people start going against the moral ethics established by the society; for example killing rulers or blasphemy etc.. it's an interesting topic to know about.
