I recognize the age difference between those Fijian cultural performers with our current age group doing the same and found out that today you'll see only the young folks . In the vid clip nearly all men look above 60s and pretty healthy and strong .

I don't know if I fully believe that they "voluntarily" gave up their land.

Fiji was ceded to great britain under a treaty when our high chief Cakobau back then was threatened on two fronts. 1. Maafu of Tonga. He gathered FIjian allies to the east namely Lauans and certain tribes to the north , buans to attack Cakobau and his men for the title of Fiji. 2. An American navy ship was bombed in Fiji where the American govt back then issued an order for cakobau to pay its govt debt for that ship or face war. So what this chief did knowing the odds was not in his favor since there were other enemies from within fiji who would love to kill and eat him anyway, He decided to come up with a plan with his British counterpart and partner in arms. The deal was Britain be given that title as head of Fiji and its territories and keep its people safe from outside threats whatsoever and in return, Fiji will offer it's men to be used in any British wars. Fiji gain independence in 1970 but the recruitment of our soldiers became traditional and it continued after that and expended to other commonwealth countries. So " the term "Voluntarily" should be replaced with "Ceded" then it will make sense.

In some ways it was voluntarily given up. The dominating tribe of Fiji had no other choice but to look towards the British Empire for protection. It was either that or be subjugated by the Tongans/be enslaved by rival tribes or be invaded by the United States (who were viscously racist). Also, the British were surprisingly kind and established cooperation between the colonials and the tribes. The tribes were given equal representation and tribal chiefs were given administrative positions by the British.
