    I hope people are paying attention. There is a lot going on here. A lot that is unsaid. Body language. The horse's language. Timing, rhythm, and feel. A journey to good horsemanship. Learn it. Pass it on. You will be giving many horses better lives.

    I love that you introduce things as your confidently walking forward. I haven't seen or hear of anyone mention this trick to build their confidence fast. Personal experience Of my own is horses read energy off their handler/rider. This is just a bonus when combined with the confidence of both the handler and the act of fallowing a "scary" object. The lesson has less flight responce from the horse if they can feel our confidence.
    I really enjoyed watching this video.

    Disappointed by this video. I love mustangs. They are very smart and naturally very curious. I have a 5 year old mustang mare and Utah reminded me of her. I could tell from the first minute of the video that Utah would go over the tarp if forced because, just like her, he doesn't want to make you upset, he wants to please, he just is very afraid and doesn't want to because it scares him.
    The worst thing that I think you can do is laugh at their fears or think of it as, "that's just a tarp, it won't hurt you, I'm smarter than you, don't be afraid of it, you're going to do it because I say so and there's nothing you can do about it". The reality is WE ALL have irrational fear, humans 100% included! How many people would not want a spider crawling on them? Me, I would scream and cringe and be like please God no, it's so creepy crawly, keep it away! Ever felt cornered by a spider? Like its jumping towards you and it's going to crawl on your face and the escape is blocked. That's how a horse feels when we force them to do things that scare them, they feel the same as us, it sucks for them, they don't fake their fears. But we corner them and force them to go through it. We could say all day, don't be afraid of the spider, its not going to hurt you, you're bigger than it, you could kill it ect, but it doesn't change it still scares us. Point being - It doesn't matter that we as the human are not scared of it - whatever is scaring your horse- , all that matters is it freaks them out and they can't control their fears, neither can we, they feel uncomfortable and just want to get away, just like us.
    I would not use negative pressure on him in the way Pat did personally, it's just NOT necessary,
    ~~~He would have crossed the tarp if you let him sniff it and think about it, on his own for 5 minutes.~~~~
    I don't have any problem with my Mustang and her fears. She is an individual, I understand her and I give her the time she needs to feel ok with something and if she's not ok with it, I'm not going to force her and put her in a corner. We can come back to it tomorrow and eat an apple by it, I'm not in a rush. It's about reps not about how fast to me. I get it, you don't pick your fears and some things will make you feel creeped out. She goes through so many scary things for me, and she never asks that of me, but I ask it of her all the time. I love her for giving me wings, she could always trample me or buck me off but she doesn't. She's my superstar. She always surprises me. She is so brave. When something new scares her I can see how much it upsets her, she wears her emotion on her sleeve, but she braves it if I ask it of her because she doesn't want to disappoint. I see that in Utah and all I want to do is see him relax and not tripping all over himself scared to death - so much anxiety he pooped himself, poor guy, that's a bad day.
    I love my mare too much to ever beak her trust by slapping her with a whip just to make a point, it would be so disrespectful to do such a thing when all she is trying to communicate is that she is just very scared. I would never tell her that she should be more afraid of me than the thing that scares her. Sure it can make you feel big in the short term and accomplish some "tricks" to an unaware crowd, but what it costs in the longer term to the relationship is not worth it. (I understand Pat is running a business, is on the clock, and needs to show people something "impressive" in order to make his living, hence this video.)
    ****This is explicitly said because Utah is a Mustang.
    ****** I love Parelli. However, I think this was a poor example of how to apply natural horsemanship for this horse. Utah's handler did an amazing job gaining his trust and I completely respect him for not whipping Utah. I understand the concept of be more scary than the thing that is scaring them because you need their attention to control them. In my opinion more foundation work is the answer, not whipping Utah in public just because he is still too green. He needed more release from pressure, he was too scared the whole time. That's a very bad time for that poor horse and he won't forget it.
      I didn't know it was him at first. Watched it till 11:50 and then stopped because I didn't like what I saw and it reminded me of Parelli, which is known here in Germany, but not his face. I much prefer Buck or Tom Dorrance any day. Don't have a set of forced rules to apply to horses , connect to them individually and directly. That's how you do justice to them in training in my opinion.
      I know you're not asking me, but start in a small enclosure and get on, even it it's just for 10 minutes every day. Stay in that small enclosure until you feel 100% in control (control but not through threats or fear). Then leave the gate open and ride out then back in gradually increasing the distance that your move into an open space. Once out of a small enclosure, you'll get different behavior but just ride back in when you feel you're losing your horse's attention. It has to be a very gradual process but you and your horse will gain trust in one another. Everything takes time with a horse.
    There are way better horse trainers out there, that don't even need to wipe the horse. This is some Clinton Anderson bullsh*t. The difference between this guy and let's say someone like Ryan Rose is Ryans's horse will be a complete partner in the end, This guy's horse will be constantly avoiding the whip in everything they do together. Ryne will swatt a horse that truly messes up for safety reasons but he uses zero pain or whips in any work, groundwork saddle work, This training anyone with a whip can do. someone like Ryan Rose builds a bond and a partnership and the horse is very soft and settled. Just look at this horse he is up and jumpy always avoiding the whip that is not training. It works but the end result is totally different. Some of the best horse trainers do not use pain for pressure they don't need to and they get even faster results. Watch this horse the entire time he is jumpy he was not until he started getting whipped, Now go watch a Ryan Rose video he gets the horse to do all the same stuff but in a soft settled mindset. The end result is a great horse with Ryan.
      TBH its just a bit of string on a stick, its not a whip which is a flexible fibreglass rod. Its not gonna hurt, more like a mild discomfort such as slapping a child's hand. Horses have to be motivated to do what we want, against their instincts which are to run away from everything. Of course you may be someone who never wants to make a horse uncomfortable in any way, in which case good luck having a paddock ornament who does nothing except eat grass and do whatever he wants.
Most of them will spend their lives swinging the rope in the horses face , having it run round and round in silly circles but at the end of the day achieve nothing . Perelli found a way to market to women and appeal to their nurturing side . Example , what was a whip for hundreds of years was now sold as a carrot stick . Laughable .
