Casual Fridays was a concept popularize by the tech industry in the 90's. At that time, multi-million dollar tech start ups were started by computer engineers and many of those guys were anti-corporate. Suit and tie was a symbol of Corporate America, and they tried to prove to the rest of the business world that a suit and tie is not necessary to make millions of dollars as once believed.
I don't think it was just a political statement. The idea is to get you to loosen up and think creatively at least one day a week, find that hidden solution by lateral thinking or have a million-dollar idea which can only hit you in unusual situations. Also to establish stronger more personal relationships amongst programming teams by having bonding sessions where you share life stories etc. It is still an idea a lot fortune 500 companies are very keen on, though they realize it in a bigger range of ways now.

Ain't nothing like having a Newfoundland steak in a Canadian Tuxedo while listening to Stephen Colbert cry about Trump. That's a Canadians average dinner.

JD Marshall you live in a fantasy world. While that may be true, we live in a fast world where we have very little time to evaluate one's attributes. Dressing properly has a huge psychological impact on workplace culture, and often tells us a lot about the person
JD Marshall You need to look smart in a working environment. In the United States, the concept of school uniforms is limited to Catholic schools, but here we have to wear the school uniform in public school, private schools and Catholic schools until we're 16. We have a strict dress code (no nose rings, no excessive make-up, skirts to a certain length, school blazer, specific shoes..etc) , and that teaches us to dress smartly in working environments later on, because what you wear DOES have an effect on first impressions and how others view you.
