Rented a Lancer for 2 weeks and went 4300 miles. Texas to NY Catskills to Augusta GA to Houston, stopping along the way in TN, NC, VA, WV, MS. Can't say enough great things about this ride. I have never owned an import or foreign car, strictly a Chevy guy for the last 40 years, I'm 66, owned corvettes, Z28's and a host of Chevy trucks, and this car impressed me. First I got an average of 35 MPG in the MTS on the HWY and town combined! I did not use 170.00 worth of fuel on this trip. It handeled like a Vette (vintage 90's) and performed like an economy car, enough speed to climb the Blue Ridge MTS and pass those 18 wheelers with no problem effortlessly. It's comfortable, had the accessories that were needed, did not have a GPS or Backup Camera but who cares my wife had her I-Phone so we were never lost. I Love This Car, just bought a Trail Hawk Jeep so I ventured out of the GM Family but I will rent this car for future long distant trips.

Mitsubishi isn't really trying hard because they are doing extremely well in the Caribbeans, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. People are buying them like hot cakes. It's only here were people don't like the simplicity of a car and want more features.

+This Guy lmaooo mitsubishi engines are more reliable than that of toyota, nissan etc and their safety ratings are top notch. When last did you hear of a Mitsubishi recall, i can recall millions of toyotas, nissans and hondas being recalled due to safety issues, airbag issues etc.

When was the last time Mitsu came out with a new powertrain?
If you use the same powertrain without change, it is reliable but outdated.

While the car isnt flashy or powerful. What it does give you is a comfortable, safe, reliable ride. I love my 2009 lancer GTS. Just got over 100k miles on it. Changed all the fluids, and spark plugs and it literally feels like a new car. This car is a backyard mechanics dream as because they have used a simple proven design under the hood. Everything is in an easy to access place for changing when needed. No annoying cover plates covering every aspect of the engine and fluid reservoirs, Not to mention tons of room in the engine bay. The car gets bashed cause of its outdated designs, but I like it. simple effective and easy maintenance. Keep doing what you do mitsu!

I think the main point should be how amazing it is to switch between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive in a car..a compact sedan! very rare these days.

I actually just bought a 2016 Lancer GT model. thus far no complaints, comes stock with leather heated seats, sport tuned suspension, sunroof, touch screen 710 watt sound system that actually bumps! Lancer is a very "basic" car in comparison to its competitors BUT it has everything you need in a car and then some! This car is for those who understand the car and the history of the Lancer, mitsubishi has INTENTIONALLY left it alone because that's what makes it a Lancer. Take a look on the road, almost all the new cars resemble one another, Lancers don't look like new cars, they're unique! But again it takes a specific type of consumer to really appreciate em. very good, fun, sporty car and got mine for under $25K!

      I've also have a 2016 Lancer GT!
Do I wish that it was an Evolution and that it had more than 168 hp? Yes.
Am I complaining with respect to what it does for its purpose as a daily driver? No.
Maybe it's because I'm biased (the EVO IX is my favorite import car of all time), but I really like the car and have 0 regrets

People don't realize how good the lancer is, it has way more room than any of the competitors, it has awd option as well as extremely good visibility. The chassis is very ridged, and overall a very durable design. Mitsubishi does not have the marketing power of Toyota and Honda, Toyota is selling utter garbage right now (2012 camry needed short block, trans and sunroof repairs) Camry also has zero tow hooks under the car!My 2016 focus ST is hard as hell to see out of and has zero rear seat room

  • @neverendingmods
    @neverendingmods 7 років тому +20

Even base Lancer has independent rear suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes, heated mirrors, decent radio, and alloy rims. Toyota corolla, Honda civic, Hyundai Elantra, and Kia base models all still have rear drum brakes, solid rear axle suspension like old pickup trucks, crap radios, and steal wheels with hubcaps.
Plus, they all have less powerful motors than base Lancer 2.0 motor.
The Subaru Impreza is only AWD option and if you option it out like the Lancer it is $5k more. All the competing cars are at least $5-$10k more fully loaded vs fully loaded and even then the suspension and awd beats the rest except for the Impreza which looks like another corolla or civic now unlike the older 2.5 RS years(UpTo 2007 looked great).
Knock an easy $2500 off cost of 2017 lancer sel fully loaded and tell me what other new car you can buy with more features for less.

    • @MrDeepzek

I would add that this has timing chain too.
I'm surprised so few people realize this. These are such a good deal. I have 08 and still runs fine.
I think it's because of lack of marketing from Mitsubishi

im so happy i got a lancer it doesnt look like a corolla unlike most cars these days
and made in japan...u cant beat that

  • @2736626smith
    @2736626smith 8 років тому +12

I got one of these in 2007 when this car was a brand-new model for '08. It was one of the first cheaper cars to offer blue-tooth and a CVT transmission. The 650-watt Rockford Fosgate sound system was nice, as were the rest of standard features for the price. The fuel economy and ergonomics were lousy though, and I'd have shoulder pain after a few hours of driving. (The pedals were too close, the wheel too far away, and arm-rests way too low.)
Now, in 2016, most models have been redesigned twice-over. It's weird to think I could buy a brand-new version of a car I had three vehicles ago. The thing is like a time machine. In 07, it took me into the future. Now, it'll take you back to the past.

I think it still looks good, exterior wise. Still looks better than most other compacts in its class, and still drives better. I'm talking about the nissan sentra and toyota corolla, which sell a lot more. Obviously its very outdated and in dire need of a complete overhaul; especially the powertrain. Yes, I also heard the hollow/cheap sound the doors made when closing. But again, its got way more hp than other rivals, is still much less expensive, and its the only one that comes with AWD (other than the much more expensive Subaru impreza). You can also still get a manual with the GT. Its ridiculous to me how badly its stuck in 2008, yet still better in some key areas than some competitors that have been refreshed 3 or 4x since then ! If Mitsubishi could just completely remodel this car to bring it up to the year 2016, they could really be at or close to the top of this class with this car. I know it sounds crazy, but I think its true. I think the new Kia Forte is better overall, and the new Honda Civic blows everybody else away in this segment at this point.

I'm only 18 and I bought a 2012 lancer and it was the best decision of my life because it's more reliable than my old 2010 cobalt and my 2011 Altima , they weren't that reliable, but my first car "2013 Corolla "was reliable but it was really expensive compared to my lancer now. I'm thinking of buying the 2016 because it looks really nice

You mentioned hearing a wind rush noise coming from the rear of the vehicle like a window is down, I noticed it with my Mirage when I first started driving it. It comes from the inside of the rear wheel wells & is especially loud if driving in the rain on the interstate from that area. But I absolutely love my Mirage and they they are awsome little cars. I honestly had high hopes that they would make a turnaround on their overall build but I can see after watching this video and test driving a friends, that nothing has really changed. I think I had this kind of interior quality in my 03 Malibu. Basic and plenty of hard plastics that'll be warped in no time. It's definitely an A to B ride, they gotta play catch up in the US!

You think that is slow :) I have 2008 Lancer X with 1.5 litre engine and torq converter auto transmission. It is 14.5 seconds to 0-100km. Where the hell am I going to go in a crowded city traffic anyways... I have been driving mine for 8 years and added some needed options every year because mine was a bone stock, not even alloy wheels. I added mp3 DVD screen, back up cam, parking sensors, decent alloys, redone the front seats foam and lether for decent comfort and most importantly a FULL SOUND INSULATION including doors floor wheel arches... Just because it is extremely reliable, I am keeping it. Whatever you do nothing happens to this car. Good A/C, seven airbags, decent breaks and handling, enough cabin space better than most rivals. Biggest problem was road noise. For me it is not worthed for the difference to buy a new car which is 5-10 times more expensive than mine. I drive a classic if I want to enjoy driving. Today's people expect unnecessary stuff from an everyday cars.

It's hard for them to be competitive, that's why they are so cheap. It's one of the best for the bux. You probably drove it to city only. I have 2008 and I get 25-27 average mpg. It has 178k miles and haven't had major issues. Big plus is that it has timing chain and you don't have to change a belt. The noise coming from outside it typical for these, if you can take it, it's a good deal. I would buy it again. In fact I almost did, there was a 2017 with 22k miles for $10.5k. what else can you buy that new and fresh... I decided to hold off because my 08 is still fine and driving. It's bad they don't make them anymore. I would be happy to see them back. At least it's way more reliable than Nissans and Hundais

ok we purchased one 2016 4wd with sunroof and is the bigger motor....u are correct on every basis especially about the road noise....thats the first thing i noticed .also idk if it is just a feature but when taking off normal , between first and second it kinda bogs down and then picks back up....idk its just weird. .....only thing i love is the handling which i think u didnt touch on...but its stiff and firm and too me isbgood to maneuver in and out of spaces ....its my wifes car so she is pretty gentle on it....but when i drive it....yea i abuse the lil mivec in it....combined with the 4wd and living in rural Texas ...there is winding roads all through here. ...id have to say i can get it around those turns....very tight and the 4wd keeps lined up right....all in all not too flashy but handing is pretty good...we bought it cash and i dont plan on selling but rather fix it up more.......i already installed the 4b12 turbo . c a intake....help powerwise and hp wise a ton......

    • @ayyybeee4271

Jr Avila it bogs down to your gas consumption low. You use more gas at that point to get the car moving.. If you give more gas from it has a mivec engine it should pick up that you want to use more gas for power. It bogs down Bc you can't feel the shift in that kind of transmission but it's keeping your Eco low

I owned a new Mazda 3 sedan, 2.0 5spd with 4whl disc brakes ( option) and $850 extra for ac. Hated that car I bought new. Was in for axles clicking even after a tsb. slower than my bigger 08 lancer 2.0 cvt. Also have a 2015 lancer 2.4l awd new and the Mitsubishi are the least problematic cars I have owned. These I am talking about are my daily drive to work cars. My new 02 WRX was and new 06 STI are my weekend toy cars heavily modded. Base Imprezza is a LOUD, cheap feeling car. Only the nice AWD system makes it a good car but the new 2016 Lancer'S with 3 different cheap awd models can be had for less than Imprezza. The Mitsubishi Lancer is Very cheap to maintain since 08 with timing chain, no belt, 4whl disc brakes, and long life coolant and Trans fluid. Shame you can't get the Lancer with awd and 5spd stick. Only the 2.0 front wheel drive model comes with stick option or the Lancer GT with stick, 2.4l but again front wheel drive. In Canada the Lancer SE awd gets paddle shifters but not USA models. Lame, just GTS gets paddles.
I just traded in my 08 Lancer ES for 2017 Lancer SEL W/sun and sound pkg + remote start. $22k WITH gap insurance and taxes OTD!! Black Friday November Mitsubishi deal. Octane blue/black leather with sunroof and Rockford fosgate system.👍

there is something you should keep an eye out for, when you get a new car they dont do good in gas till you put some miles on to them. Its call engine break in period. One week worth of driving in a newer car does not reflect accurate actual millage.

Well considering the fabricated fuel economy figures scandal, it's not entirely surprising that the real life average is different from what's on paper. I have a 2014 1.6 model. It's aight, has about 117 hp, not really powerful but I enjoy driving it. I don't think I would've gone for this 2016 model, the 2016 Mazda 3 has the about same sized engine with way more power so I might've preferred that.

I remember wanting this car when I graduated from College at the age of 22. Well I'm now 31 and the car looks mostly the same...... What happened Mitsubishi? The competition is eating them alive, there's no reason to buy this car over the 2016 versions of the Civic, Cruze, Focus, Dart, Elantra, Forte, or Corolla.

Dave, it would be good if you could compare prices and reliability trends with the other cars in the class. There are some real nightmares coming out of car factories these days. These Mitsubishi's are more reliable and less expensive. That goes a long way.

So basically... the exact same car as the 2009-15 lineup, but the front end got beaten up with an ugly stick? I have a 2009 Ralliart with turbo/AWC and 5.4 second 0-60 sprint, and my MPG rating is the same... weird. What is keeping that engine down? Maybe the standard shifter is the cure. I used to have a 09 Lancer GT standard and the fuel mileage was fantastic with what I assume is the same engine (2.0L).

I am starting to feel really sorry for Mitsubishi as a brand. Ive said it before, but their automotive division really got hosed with the departure of Chrysler taking a majority of their joint venture technology with them.
I like some of what they are doing trying to keep this fresh now, but...jesus, this platform is approaching nearly 10 years old, without so much as a basic structural upgrade. And at this point, its REALLY starting to show.
And once again, every door open and close sounded like a couple baking sheets being banged together from the chincy sheet metal, and lack of dampening.
A couple years back, in the process of a rally car prep of an older previous model generation Lancer, we gutted the interior of the car to weld in a roll cage. In the process of tearing everything out, we discovered the "sound deadening". Not a tar based heavy sheet, no foam clad padding on sheet metal, no real mass dampening at all whatsoever. Nope, nothing. What it was, was a sheet of foam, that looks all the world like a carpet pad, coated/laminated/glued to what can only be described as a "moving blanket" material. And to make it worse, it wasnt clued in, taped on, or clipped in, in any way. It was simply haphazardly placed into the body panel cavity, to keep the hole company i guess. Because it was just a pile of fabric and foam in the bottom of the panel void by the time we got to it.
Now, im not saying that the current Lancers are the same way, ive never had one of them apart to know. But judging by the crashy clang of every door opening, more or less the door shutting, I would suspect the same techniques are still being employed. Which is likely what gives you that "i can hear the road" feeling, because, quite literally, there may not be any insulation between you and the road. Ironically the piece of "insulation" im speaking of, came from the cavity between the C pillar and the rear wheel arch, right where you say you hear noises. I find that to be hardly coincidence.
Also wanted to point out, that i found it somewhat humerous that you said you liked what they did with the headlights. Because the headlights are, quite literally, exactly the same as the outgoing 2015 models. Even the fog lights are mounted into the same spot. All that has changed, is the styling of the nose around the light housings, altering the overall shape of the bumpers design, so as not to be as prominent as the original Lancers shield snout was.
Also, i would be willing to bet that the projected fuel economy numbers are done with he car in 2WD mode. In AWD i think your economy average, even on such a short range, is likely quite accurate. As the AWD system will suck quite a bit more power to keep all 4 wheels turning. I would imagine that the inclusion of the 2WD mode is purely for economy numbers.

I can agree on the road noise and sometimes thinking their is a back window open. I have a '14 Ralliart and the interior is basically the same, except for a few odds and ins stuff. Mitsubishi for some reason can't get over the MPG hump, and even more why they can't get more tech in their vehicles. Far as someone saying the break down a lot, nah, they are solid cars overall, just lack in the updating/mpg department. Guess that what happens when your parent company boots you to the curb and takes all your R&D with them.

In Vancouver, there are tons of Lancers from '08 to '15. They're cool looking but they've been like that since almost a decade ago. If you guys know about GEMA, it's true. Hyundai's theta engine was modified with GDI and other technologies for performance. Mitsubishi's MIVEC engine is the only one not updated. Even Chrysler's World Engine became the Tigershark Engine due to Fiat's Multiair.
And insurance for these cars here aren't so cool.

I'd be all over buying one of these if they made a hatchback or wagon variant. Sedan doesn't work for my lifestyle. 168hp is actually pretty good for a compact car. Several much newer designed compacts have significantly less HP or similar. This same engine is quite peppy in the heavier Outlander Sport that my Mom owns. I assume it feels even stronger in this lighter car.

Who would actually spend the money on a fully loaded Lancer? It's essentially the same for nearly 10 years and finally gets a facelift and nothing seems improved nor stands out... If it's cheaper than the competition, it's justified but its priced up there with the more superior competition.

interior lack-luster. steering felt too heavy for my liking. engine hum is louder than many compact sedans ive tested. doesnt bother me tho

They're really doing poorly in the RnD department. This design is really aging now, even with the financial difficulties they're having they need to step up their game.Corolla and Civic prices are creeping up but so is their quality.Lancer is basically the same car since 2007,it isn't a W124 that was such a great car that they didn't need to change anything for a decade.

about the Avg MPG part... I see you had an average speed of about 15 mph at that 23.2 mpg average which is the epa average for city driving. that 23.2 mpg is not the average for the tank if it has been over the course of a few days because the mpg average resets itself after 4 hours of inactivity.

Not everybody wants or needs to have all the cutting edge technology or a strokable dashboard. People who dog it don't factor in the real-life reasons that people buy this car. Same with the Corolla....I can buy one of these and pretty much never have to worry about the transmission taking a dump or some newfangled gizmo taking the car out of commission for a week. It's a low-risk buy.
