- Voigtlander put out one of the most impressive, and important lenses, back in 1959. This is one of the greatest vintage lenses ever and the Zoomar was the start of zoom lenses.
Come along as we talk about this lens and put it through its paces to test performance and image quality.
We hope you enjoy!
The "horror" opening short was shot with:

Yeah, guys, the opening was a blast! Great job with the Voigtlander. Excellent feel and nice to see Claire working on an Oscar nomination ;) And by golly, there was little Linkley making an appearance... Keep the vids coming!
Absolutely! The vids will keep coming! Glad you enjoyed the opening....vote Claire to the Academy. Lmao. And Linkley is going to become the channel mascot!
Great work. Fun and instructive. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words! This video was a lot of fun to create. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video!! Intro was dope
Thank you so much! The intro was so fun to make!
I loved the beginning of this video. I had to show it to my wife because she can relate.
Lmao. That’s fantastic! I’m glad so many can relate. Thank you for watching!
I loved your opening. I subscribed!
Thank you! The opening was super fun to make. And we're working on a few more videos with little "side stories" like this one!
This intro is fantaaastic. It cracked me up as my wife and I relate to it far too well hahaha! How many lenses????
Thank you! This was such a fun video to make! I love how many people can relate. All of the lenses!!!!!!! Lol.
Nice review, I hadn’t been familiar with this lens. It looks really interesting. Who doesn’t need yet another lens ??
Thanks for watching! And I couldn’t agree more…you can never have too many lenses! Lol!
Very funny opening clip. Good review. Thank you. I have one Zoomar too, I will see how it goes with the Leica M 11 soon
Thank you so much! The opening was super fun to make and this is one of my favorite lenses!
I was curious about setting up the Zoomar on my Leica M4, but the adapters don’t have focus coupling, so I’d have to zone focus.
I’d be very curious to hear how it works in the M11!
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 I keep that lens in another address, and I will be able to test it from 17 November (for just a week if I do not bring it here) and will let you know. The adapter enables you to set the aperture manually in the camera and by using a Visoflex 2, I expect to be able to focus the lens. I will let you know if it works. I have used it with Nikon cameras through the same adapter I will use this time with the Leica M11 (by adding a Nikon to Leica adapter on top)
Your intro was awesome!
Thank you!!! It was super fun to make! Probably my favorite opening. Lol. We're working on a "sequel" for a follow up video....
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 I look forward to it!
Does the whole front end rotate when focusing so you can't use clip on matte boxes?
The front end does rotate while focusing. So, sadly, clip on matte boxes don't work. It would have to be a rail mounted matte box.
Having issues with ours. Aperture is stuck and it has an EF mount. Any way you can assist us getting this EF mount off? Thanks!
I’d be happy to assist! Can you send me a video of what’s going on (DM me on IG)?
To see if I’m able to help.
I got this lens after watching your review. Like all vintage lenses I bought, I run it thru a geiger counter. The rear element registered upwards to 200 CPM. Isn't that high?? The front element registered about 30-40 CPM. Should I be concerned about this?? You have two according to your video. Was this a consideration of yours when you purchased? Readings of 57 CPM with both caps on. Readings of 196 CPM when the flange cap is off. When the geiger is positioned behind the camera with the lens mounted on the camera, readings are 40 CPM.
I will preface my response with the statement that I am in no way an authority on CPM or radioactivity.
My understanding through research is that while some lenses use Thorium, the danger to the user is negligible. I know that Media Division covered CPM and radiation in the Canon FD video and had lenses with much higher CPM (the Canon FD 55mm SSC Aspherical coming in at over 33,000 CPM from the front element). They covered briefly a study conducted by the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority that determined for typical photographer use, the total radiation exposure amount would be less than 0.2% of the yearly allowable amount.
I wouldn't say that the radioactivity of the lens was part of my considerations when purchasing either one.
As I mentioned above, I am not an expert. I can understand the concern and wanting to remain safe. I can only say what I've seen in my research. I hope that helps!
Thank you for watching!
I've had a rough day. You made me laugh. Freaks. Now i'm going to watch the rest of your video.
I'm sorry the hear you had a rough day. I'm glad we were able to make you laugh! (and maybe help improve your day some?)
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it.
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 So... you put the germ of a thought in my head - the difference in aesthetic expectations and 'tolerance' between still and video photography and (notwithstanding that there is always crossover). Maybe it's just that everyone who drones on about the marvel of 'tack-sharp' shoots still (as i do). These are separate worlds for me - i have no interest in shooting video and wouldn't know how to do so on my cameras - but i sense that there is a difference between them... maybe stills carries the baggage of the history of photography more than does the video scene? Or am i just making noises? Cheers.
Thank you! I love that this comment definitely makes people (at least me) think deeper about intention and art. There are similarities and differences between photo and video. I don’t think you’re just making noise at all. This is fantastic!
I think the difference in aesthetic expectations and ‘tolerance’ is more a commentary of the creator rather than photography or videography. I think it’s more what it conveys and how it makes the viewer feel. There are plenty of photos through history that aren’t sharp, whether it be from motion blur or missed focus, that are highly regarded. Not that I have any issue personally with tack sharp imagery, but I find that I prefer “character” more than clinically sharp images.
I definitely think you do see this mindset more in cinema than photography. Though I suspect (although I don’t know for sure) that this is because lenses that have more character tend to be more flattering and forgiving? I’m not sure.
Not sure if you bring it up but what’s the deal with the push/pull zoom ring? Does that mean you can’t put a remote follow focus on it to control the zoom when filming with it?
You are correct. Being an older style design, you really can't gear the zoom (unless you have the lens rehoused). So, the lens being parfocal, while having its advantages, is really hard to use and create stable footage. You can gear the focus with a follow focus, but the zoom sadly cannot be geared.
Thanks for getting back to me. That's a real pity. I've asked for a quote for the rehousing from GL Optics but guessing it's super expensive @@michaelmarshallphotography5515
It’s definitely got a hefty price tag. Last I check I think GL Optics was rehousing this for like $8500. I would love to have it done at some point, but definitely not in the budget right now.
This is such an interesting and expensive lens. A huge technological advancement in optics at the time. How much does it weigh? Cause it looks like a solid piece of metal and glass.
It is an incredible lens. Extremely impressive for the time and advancement in technology.
It weighs in at just under 2 pounds. So it’s a hit of a heavy boy. It’s built like a tank.
Hey man awesome video!
Thinking of buying one, which Mount Version would you recommend for adapting on Canon EF? :)
Thank you so much!
Both of mine are DKL mount and I’ve been very pleased with their performance using a Fotodiox mount adapter (and I’m adapting DKL to EF as well).
I don’t really have any first hand experience with the other mount options sadly.
Let me know what you think once you get it! Definitely my favorite vintage zoom!
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 Awesome! Thank you so much for the info! :)
I will let you know ;)
I have had one for many years but have never used it. But now, I found a mount adapter that will allow me to put it on my OM 1 micro four thirds. How do you think that will go ?
That will be very, very interesting. Is it a focal reducer adapter? If not, you’ll get the 2x magnify from the sensor size difference. An 72-164mm would be really cool. I’d be very interested to hear how that works out!
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 not a focal reducer so, yes, it will become 72-164. I wonder if it will maintain it continuous focus attributes. Stay tuned.
I’m very excited to hear how this works out!!! I look forward to your results!
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 Well, it’s mounted and it works. I can tell you one thing for sure and that its range of continuous focus while zooming has been reduced by at least 50%, as I thought it would. No photos yet. Standby for further.
Well… here it is. A little front heavy when fully extended but manageable. Looks great
Is it possible to make more videos about this lens? I would really like to buy this lens, but the minimum price for a good one starts from $1k. Thank you !
For sure! I can definitely do that. I have some ideas of follow up content on this lens.
you can never have too many lenses.
Oh I agree completely! No such thing as too many.
Haha "Is this another lens" my wife stopped asking this a long time ago. She know "Yes, of course it is"
Haha. I mean, Claire is getting to that point. It's either another lens or a bunch of film!
Yesterday I got a Sigma 28mm f1.4 ART lens I found for a steal on Amazon. She was like "Dont you already have a ton of 28mm lenses" and I was like "I have 11 but this one is an Autofocus not vintage". Totally been on a quest to collect as many 28mm lenses in 2023. Love that focal length. @@michaelmarshallphotography5515
I’m literally running into that with 85mm’s. Lol. What’s your favorite 28mm you have? I recently picked up a Vivitar 28mm f/2 that I used in NY. I liked it….but didn’t love it. Any recommendations?
Besides the SIgma 24 ART? Well I have to go with either my Vivitar 28mm f1.9 Series 1 that I watched for two months at a thrift store start at $195 and end up in my pocket for $50 (and talking Canadian bucks) and the Nikkor 28mm f2.8 AIS is a great lens as well. But the Vivitar 28 just packs so so much interesting bokeh. Its just nuts!
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515
Interesting. I’ll look into the Vivitar series 1. I definitely need a higher performing 28mm. I really want to try the Contax Zeiss 28mm and the Canon FD 28mm f/2 as well, but they’re usually a bit too expensive. At least last time I checked.
Just found one in what you, guys in America call a thrift store and I have a Sony A7R V. Now what?
That's awesome! Alright, so now you need a lens adapter to mount the Voigtlander on the Sony. The Voigtlander was originally released in m42 and DKL mount (and later in Exakta). I'd get a Fotodiox mount adapter for the lens to your Sony E mount.
Which mount is the one you picked up?
@@michaelmarshallphotography5515 Thanks, it's DKL mount, I already ordered the adapter, but I will have to wait to the end of the month...pfffe
Once you get the adapter, let me know what you think! I think you're going to love this lens! Well, at least I hope you do!
