I worked at an OMC dealership in the 1980s and 1990s. That there motor was fondly referred to as the "Popcorn 50". Sadly, it took OMC many years before they figured out pistons and porting for that motor line. Turned out good in the late 80s, but anything from the 70s was an explosion waiting to happen.

By 1980 all major issues were fixed for the 60hp. these appeared to use the skinny "chicken" rods, of course old style bearings and 3cyl high-ring pistons all of that cannot help things. the 55's were really only slightly better but had lots of issues with sleeves like you said.

Unbelievable what the seller said runs good, I'm glad you bought it , I think you got a bargain in parts as for the seller 😄

I think the wrist pen bearing went bad over heating the low part of the piston on one side and pull the wrist pen out of the piston at an angle wedging the piston one side of the cylinder wall for 1/2 a revaluation of the crankshaft. With the wrist pen bearing being hot it all got the rod [ at the top] hot and bent it over at the same time it wedge the piston. In most cases it happens on the compression stroke.

Pistons may have been colliding with the explosion. That may explain why the other piston was crack as well & why the surface gap plugs were used.

Looks like you are having fun. Good to see you doing UA-cam. It's interesting to see the disassemble . I think you are right. It looks like an over rev. Could have been out of water or the engine kicked up at Max Warp, blowing it up.

I think he had it out of the water he got to start it and hadn't been started for a while he dropped it in gear and wrapped her up and she just override then grenaded

Nice view of the carnage at 11:26. Doesn't get boring looking at that when you don't have to call a customer and be the bearer of bad news.

My college car was a 74 superbug. Wrist pin clip let go and just like that the engine blew.

bought new 50 around 80s. Maiden voyage on Mo river, didnt have 30 min on it. top of piston came off. they put new power head on it. they said it was a known problem. was a great motor for 20 years of hard duck hunting till it chewed a tree stump.

The bent rod is a dead give away IMHO. Another vote for hydro lock!

Well, at least you'll be able to save that lift ring off the block !!!

I say there was a sudden intrusion of water into the cylinder that caused a hydroloc at high RPM. Seen it happen before.

Water in the Cylinder stopped Piston immediately. Hydraulic shock. May a strong Wave from behind caused the Water in the exhaust Port. And you cant compress water, so the Piston Rod bend over and chracked.

Nice window there yet “ i don’t know how that happened “ …… really !!!! He got the motor for free and tried to flip it ! Same thing happened to me but the guy said “ It RUNS perfect “ and I said when and he said 2 weeks ago ! I got that one for $20 , a 1983 25hp Johnson LS -E tiller with trim/tilt . Heck the starter alone is worth more then that !!! Hahaha

Looks like overspeeding may have caused this-ran w/sheared propeller?

I hope that never happens to my 55, I would guess over revving or possible hydro lock from water ingress, who knows?

Guess you'd call that an uncontained detonation.

Is there any chance it was hydro locked?

Most people who might of gone to buy that motor wouldn't of noticed the damage and the con artist would of got the $400 he was asking for it and wouldn't of been happy campers finding out what garbage that motor is.

Brandon is good at finding the real problems not the superficial ones....like close to 23.6% of the time.
Looks like a shitty rebuild that came apart on its own.
