    Excellent video, although every big city has its problems Yonkers has been an excellent city on border of NYC

    This is i remember the commercial for Yonkers Raceway. I lived in Queens and i didn't know it was so close! Growing up in NYC, these suburbs might as well be 2000 miles away. We never went.

    I left Yonkers in 2013 on the advice of the then Governor, "King" Cuomo to self deport if not in the likeness of his perception of a New Yorker. Glad to see that many aspects of life there are uplifted and there are some marvelous new things, and that much good of the old is still there. I resided in the northeast part of the City, the old 11th Ward. An adantage was proximity to enjoy the amenities of the surrounding small villages nearby, Tuckahoe, Eastchester, Bronxville, and Scarsdale, as well as the cities of Mt. Vernon and New Rochelle, which were more accessible to my former addresses than some other parts of Yonkers. The cops and firefighters there are first rate providers of public safety, another great plus. Good selling.

    I grew up there from ‘67-‘77. I lived off S Broadway which was rough& gritty even back then. My parents paid about $85 mo for rent!! 😮We moved to Riverdale which was a big improvement. Yonkers does have some beautiful areas.

    Nice job, well organized, and informative thx! The one area not covered was grocery shopping. I'm curious are there chain stores, mom & pop, specialty stores, markets?

    • @LivingInWestchesterNewYork
      @LivingInWestchesterNewYork  5 місяців тому +1

      There are both big chain grocery stores and little mom and pops delis/bodegas all around Yonkers. Where ever you are located in Yonkers groceries are not far.

    I lived in (south) Yonkers in the 80s and 90s.
    It was rough and I could not fathom anyone who was on the Honor Roll getting through schools like John Burroughs junior high, Saunders High School, Gorton High, etc. and passing. I still could not even understand how w hites were able to live there, though only a few w hites. One had to be moved to the front of the bus for fear she was going to get jumped by a group of kids in the back. I had trouble sitting in a seat, my whole year going to John Burroughs junior high, because no kids wanted me to sit with them, and the kids in the back wanted to find a reason to beat me up.
    I could not sit in a class without a kid smacking my head, neck, pushing me, bothering me to listen to them, getting tripped or pushed in the halls, etc. Knives and guns going into school. Kids coming up to you with a gun pressed up to your gut, in school saying calmly, "i want your bubble jacket" or "I want your Nike sneakers."
    Also walking through the PJs near Getty Square, Warburton, Buena Vista avenue, etc. - I was always running from neighborhoods because kids would chase after me in groups or get dogs to bite me.
    Just like Jadakiss said, him and I both are from Hawthorne/Pier Street area, and I could not leave anything for a few seconds without it getting stolen. I lived next to that Domino Sugar factory.
    My pops moved to White Plains because it was too rough to live there, always being on edge.
    But? I guess things have changed, huh? Well good then!

      Why w Hites? They better than to live there in those times? They too delicate? Like wtf you put them on too high of a pedestal

      I went to NYC and decided to see how it looks today. So I drove around a couple months ago and showed my teenage daughter where I grew up. She said:
      “Can we get out of here?”
      Still the same 😒
