  • Suite “No. 1” for Solo Marimba (1989) by Takayoshi Yoshioka (1955-Present)
    I.) A Peaceful Moment
    II.) Whimsical Story
    III.) Running From A Dream
IV.) Fond Memories of Long Ago
    V.) A Summer Night’s Thrill
VI.) A Deep SIgh on a Rainy Day
    VII.) To The Sky
Japanese composer and marimba soloist, Takayoshi Yoshioka, has performed and composed in many different styles and situations. His performance experience stretches across the globe as he has performed multiple times throughout Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. His composition experience is also very vast, as he has written multiple suites and a concerto for the marimba. He has had the opportunity to perform his concerto with 5 orchestras across the globe, ranging from the Japan Symphonic Orchestra to the Paraguay National Symphony Orchestra.
Through these experiences, Yoshioka found inspiration to write Suite “No. 1” for Solo Marimba. These 7 movements go through many different genres and styles of music. These include but are not limited to: rock, swing, and classical music. Through these exploration of styles, Yoshioka mentions in the composer's notes that this is his attempt to expand the sonic field that marimba can be a part of: “I tried to explore a musical field that crossed all genres”.
This attempt at combining genres is evident across the movements. Along with this, Yoshioka mentions how the title of the movement provides very important context for the performer as well as the audience member. As one is listening or performing this suite, the title of each movement can be seen as a guide or descriptor of what Yoshioka intended for each movement. Yoshioka mentions however that these can be treated as “suggestions” leaving interpretation to the audience member or performer in how these short, genre-bending movements make them feel.
