Thank you for posting this video. One I've never seen. Jess was an old friend of mine from Cape Girardeau. His piano playing was to die for. ;)

Stacey's Carnegie Hall "Sing Sing Sing" is the greatest impromptu piano solo ever recorded.

You knew Jess? Man I would give my piano playing skill to be able to meet him, he looks like one of the nicest guys ever to walk the earth!

@@99muddy99I suppose you've heard it. You probably know that everyone believed it was lost forever because no one had recorded it. They were wrong. Benny Goodman's sister had recorded it off the radio, put the tapes away, and forgotten about it until 1951. Thank God for digital remastering. One hypothesis about why Goodman nodded to Stacy instead of Teddy Wilson, who was also on the bandstand, is that Goodman was furious with Wilson, who had given notice. Do you know Whitney Balliett's writing? He was surely the greatest writer who ever wrote about jazz. His portrait of Stacy, and of that night, is in Balliet's collection, American Musicians. I think it has 85 chapters, something like that. His chapter about Stacy is "Back from Valhalla."
It's shocking to realize that after the big band era ended, Stacy spent many years delivering mail in Los Angeles. America doesn't deserve its great artists.

Terrific.A window into a World that might as well be hundreds of years ago given how different to today. At least there is film in existence of Miss Wiley.Non exists of Charlie Christian.Very little of Dave Tough.Small amounts of Django and Tatum.Such an opportunity, lost for ever.

AFAIK, not much Lee Wiley footage around, but to be honest, I haven't looked. This footage shot by my father so it was an easy find.

Lee Wiley was the ruination of several men, Bunny Berigan among them. Supposedly after their divorce, Jess Stacy commented, "They didn't burn all the witches at Salem." But, oh man, she could sing!

Wiley must have had serious mental problems, but Stacy was probably the only man in her life who was remotely capable of coping wth her. She tried to re-connect with Jess later on, but she had exhausted the patience of a patient man! But the music and the voice will endure..........
