  • A LOT of folks have asked for updates on my Brachypelma species, so I figured that it was time for another blowout. And, to make things a bit more fun, I played around with recording in 4k this time. I know I'm not a photographer, but hopefully the images will be clearer!

when i first started the hobby i didn't really like brachypelmas. part of it was the drab tlitocatls then in the genus, the other part was the zealots trying to force a beginner species on me. now that i've raised lots of species from all around the world, i can really appreciate the red leg tarantulas of mexico, they're in my top 3 favourite genus now.

I have a 1inch B. Emilia, she's skittish but never kicks any hair, she's an absolute beauty, with her faint adult colors starting to show. I'm a new keeper and I'm so happy to see her grow! Your channel really helped me with sling care, thank you!

Tom - always a fantastic and thorough video. I got all of my Brachys as slings. It has been a real treat watching them grow and I have lots of other T’s to keep me preoccupied while these guys grow. My Hamorii is just a darling. He’s bold! Sits out in the open no problems and doesn’t bolt or run when I’m messing around in its cage. My Klassi is a shy little thing but a darling nonetheless. Thank you so much for sharing your Brachy collection!

Thank you so much! Although they take forever to grow up, I also think that it is totally worth it. I wish my hamorii was as bold, although she DOES seem to be calming down. And my B. klaasi has been a wonderful surprise. :)

After YEARS in the hobby, I finally got my very first Brachypelma species. A female juvenile Brachypelma auratum. Them being hair kickers is definitely not an understatement. I've just rehoused her from the container I got her in. She kicked herself bald in the span of 30 secs 🤦

My first two spiders back in March were a B.Smithi and B.boemei. the Smithi was only about 3/4” and has now molted twice and is 1.25” and in premolt again! The Boemei was about 1” but molted 3 days after I got her, she has now molted 3 times since March and is just under 2”! Both are insanely skittish and bolt to their burrows when disturbed. The only time my Boemei has kicked was rehousing her. I also have 2 Albiceps, a now 3/4” sling (just molted on Thursday) and a 2.5” juvie I received as a freebie. Definitely fascinating spiders and amongst all I have some of my favorites!
Thank you for the Brachyblowout 2!!

@@TomsBigSpiders ironically not that warm. 70-73 right now, but during the summer the room could spike to about 77.
Moving them into the basement in a week where it is holding between 73-75. My sons room is running out of space lol. It is unusual as my “slower” growing species all seem to have great growth rates while a few of my “faster” ones are growing much slower haha

Tom, I just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I just got home from a huge exotic show in Sacramento 100k SQ ft and 110 vendors. I got 2 more Ts and with my luck, and being gone 22 hours, my T Albopilosus molted while I was away, I'd been waiting. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Anyway, I bought 2 more Ts, new world, I'm not ready for old just yet. I got a Cyriocosmus elegans, who is past it's 8th molt, the tiny slings were too scary, she's about an inch or just over. I also bought a Nhandu chromatus, a half inch. I'm so excited, and my husband even wanted one, so they are technically mine, but he wanted the C elegans. I just appreciate your approach on the videos and the podcast. I am entertained by your videos, but I'm taught valid information while watching. I love the other channels too, so it's not a knock on them. Thank you very much for your time. I still think you should put in an ad at the end of the video and the podcast, that way, people could skip and if they don't, you could make a little extra cash for the time you spend, though I know you aren't doing this for the money.

I'm in warm Southern California and keep them in a hot south facing walk-in closet on the second floor of my home. They stay around 85F for at least 10 hours a day and I feed them every 5 days. So strange to hear how slowly your hamorii grew. I got mine as a sexed female at 3" in August 2022 and already she is pushing 5" and has molted 3 times putting on at least .5" each molt. I keep my T's pretty warm though. They are in my reptile room which usually stays at the high 70's low 80's during the day. I usually feed her 1 large cricket once or twice a week, unless she's looking too plump, then we skip a meal. I try to keep her abdomen a reasonable size (slightly larger than her carapace) I don't power feed by any means. I think I'm mostly just lucky with this one lol.
I just picked up teeny-tiny .25" slings of several more Brachypelma species (baumgarteni, emilia, auratum, boehmei, and hamorii) so it will be very interesting to compare the growth rates of each species being kept in the exact same conditions.

Hello! If you want to go super cheap, you can used plain old topsoil (I've used Scott's and Timberline myself). You can also buy large 10 lb. bricks of coco fiber and rehydrate it. It makes several gallons of sub. Peat is also cheap and can be bought in large bales for about $10, although I'm reading that it's not exactly friendly to the environment. Or, you can create mixes of all three. For about $25 you can buy a coco fiber brick, a bag of topsoil, and a bale of peat and mix them together for a whole heck of a lot of dirt. Hope that helps!
