- Chris Botti in Boston features trumpeter Chris Botti along with a bevy of name artists performing live with the Boston Pops Orchestra at Symphony Hall in 2008. Fully documented as a concert film and album, the night is an intimate and soulful birds-eye view of the supple-toned trumpeter who has grown into his role as a virtuoso since his time backing up Sting -- who of course appears here. Perhaps it isn't surprising then the concert is subtly reminiscent of Sting's own classic coming of age concert moment Bring on the Night. If Sting's 1986 show was an attempt to reintroduce himself to the world as a pop-cum-jazz artist, then Botti's 2008 show is clearly a showcase for the one-time smooth jazz wunderkind to fully represent himself as the eye of his own crossover storm. Having never fully embraced the synthetic vibe of the smooth jazz sound, Botti has spent his time since 2004's massively popular When I Fall in Love creating his own organic, acoustic and "straight-ahead" crossover jazz. In the context of contemporary smooth jazz, Botti's retro-gesture is actually kind of innovative. Clearly owing a heavy debt to legendary trumpeter Miles Davis, Botti not only surrounds himself with the elegant, live Boston Pops Orchestra, but has hired some of the most heavy-hitting rhythm section players on the scene with drummer Billy Kilson, bassist Robert Hurst, pianist Billy Childs, guitarist Mark Whitfield, and others. The result clearly pulls much inspiration from Davis' work with Gil Evans -- he even plays "Flamenco Sketches" -- but never seems to belabor the comparison. Similarly, Botti's choice of guest artists including vocalist Josh Groban, violinist Lucia Micarelli, and even rocker Steven Tyler always appears genuinely considered based on Botti's own musical taste. And although pairing the elegant cellist Yo-Yo Ma with Botti is somewhat of a no-brainer, their work together here, much like the entire concert itself, is never less than breathtaking.

I had my best time in korea, married to a wonderful woman...... But now we lived apart in 2 different continents....... We used to love the whole concert together... Actually I think it's one of the best we'll made blue ray concert ever........ The whole music array brings me joy, gives me hope somehow to overcome this loneliness.... I just wish eternally our lives come by back again and have the greatest time back again and delight ourselves through this overwhelming concert...........

This is truly the most wonderful concert available on UA-cam today. I can't tell you how many times I've played this - too many to count. I saw him live in Poznan 7 years ago; best concert by far. thanks, that does put the criticism in proper perspective. To my way of thinking its about all the people that do enjoy. Its okay if someone just doesn't particularly like certain styles of music or musicians. There is more than enough music around for everyone to find something they like.

It matters not what Chris Botti plays composition-wise - every time I hear him play I hear two great trumpeters....Miles Davis and Freddi Hubbard. This young man's ability will always make any tune he plays "his own". Fantastic talent...thanks for sharing the video!

I watched this video a few times but I did not understand the difficulties in playing the trumpet before this. I tried it on my trumpet and trash came out of it. I cannot control my breathing and my embouchure is a mess. Chriss Botti on the other hand, played those tunes like it was child's play; easy and effortlessly. The choice of songs in this concert is candy to the ears. I love it with one exception, I don't understand jazz, of course I cannot play it myself on my piano or my trumpet. Good job Mr Botti.

I have loved this concert so much and have listened to it many times. Thank you, thank you. But even my bose speakers were nothing compared to the joy I felt when my son took me to the Cain Park concert in Ohio last week. To hear the concert live. Oh my! He opened the show with a duet with Lucia Micarelli. Her solo later brought the audience to their feet! I am old and well remember going to Miles concerts. But I love Chris's playing more.

Botti's music made me fall in love with jazz and it inspired me to learn an instrument again( I learned to play the piano when I was a kid but unfortunately I gave it up ). I wanted to play the trumpet but it was almost impossible to find a teacher in my hometown. Now I'm learning the electric guitar. I really appreciate it.
