i owe melanie martinez so much for this damn cover. she is the reason that i ever searched this song up on apple music and found neutral milk hotel. she is the reason i am getting “pluck all your silly strings, bend all your notes for me” tattooed across my knees. and she is the reason, intern, that i stopped listening to pop and started listening to folk, rock, and jazz. my life was changed because of this cover.
Can I just say, this is still my favorite song ever. I don't know how to explain why. But the first time I heard this cover of it, I wish, like madness, there was a great album version!! Her voice is amazing, and I adore what she has done with it!!
y’all complaining about her belting when there’s literally tons of trash soundcloud rappers trying to mumble out their garbage music. this girl actually has talent , unlike some of the other artists in the entertainment industry.
I agree with you. Soundcloup rappers like XXXTENTACION, Lil Peep and Lil Pump is the type of artists that is the reason why the music nowadays is so shit
People seriously dislike this...? Like...really? How? There are many, many NMH covers out there. Lots of them are decent. Quite a few, good. A couple are exceptional. And then, there is this. I don't know this artist, but her performance is amazing. She is somehow able to make "Oh Comely" her own while staying true to the creepy-yet-hauntingly-beautiful breath of Jeff Mangum's lyrics and melody pop in a sweet-yet-eerie and very in-tune way.
@@kadencecook9663 She cut out large parts of the 2nd and 3rd verses so she could end on "... crush him with everything I own" and "... all in your ovaries." to all the confused haters: a cover is not necessarily supposed to sound like the original. hence it being a cover. also, I'd like everyone who insulted this to upload a video of your playing the guitar, singing, and playing the tambourine all at the same time.
Melanie Smith you don't need to become chancellor of germany and lead the country through a war to criticise hitler. i get your argument but i personally thought her style didn't fit the song but that is just personal opinion. moral of the story: you don't need to be good at something to think something isn't good.
this is my favorite song ever, and it is so deeply burned into my memory that every single lyrical and melodic change instantly sticks out to me I love this song so much that I just can't even listen to some covers and her treatment of this song is **really fucking good**
@@vpxc agreed. its an extremely difficult song to cover well due to the awkward nuance and personal nature of the original. also...i've always wanted to hear a female performed interpretation of the album in full and how that could change the context and feeling of the songs. she absolutely filled this song with her soul. beautifully done.

@Gyaku thank you for looking at my channel even though no one asked you to do so. im not a stalker, it just means im a big fan of BTS and theres nothing wrong with that.
@Gyaku yeah ok whatever, just because you don't like them it doesn't mean it should be a ''crime'' and back to your first reply, are you saying that people aren't allowed to have an opinion if they have different taste from you? wow
The only reason I clicked on this was because I saw a female presenting person perform a cover of the song and I thought it was brave. However I heard what she did not sing in the lyrics and I immediately changed my viewpoint. That was not brave. Nor was it ambitious. From one lady to another it was actually kind of disappointing. And from someone who is a fan, I don’t appreciate the edits to the lyrics of what was already perfect prose. Lastly, the disjointed timing and odd energy brought to the stage with all of the silly flourishes and persona to be considered this was a poor song choice for her even if it was in her vocal range. “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”
@@sophiab6486 "Female presenting person" - huh? Wearing a dress or having long hair or makeup doesn't make you "female presenting". Don't equate female with the antiquated notion of "feminine". Of course Jeff Magnum wasn't involved in WW2, but he had a weird thing for Anne Frank, and this whole album is kind of inspired by her story, the song Holland 1945 is about her, and the line at 3:41 is, too, along with lots of other parts of the album.
Talented, but I hate what she did to the lyrics. A lot of silly flourishes. Butchered. Definitely not for me. I hope fans could find the original based on what bit of the melody and accurate lyrics there were.
I agree, I prefer the original a lot, her personality isn't really suited to this type of song due to the original singer's individuality with his voice, it makes it hard for me to care for her voice.

This is my favorite NMH song and she absolutely did it justice. She made it hers. This is what a cover is supposed to be. Just wow.
the fact she’s literally jammin out as if she was home in her socks and everything gives me life, i love her 🤍
This song will live forever. Melanie has a few of these up. Both i’ve heard so far are purely beautiful.

I had no idea Melanie Martinez was a patrician
Death Grips cover when?
Ian Campbell lmao
Imagine her doing a cover of On GP
Ian Campbell we get it. you go on /mu/
you should feel shame for this comment
Her voice is so smooth here wow
I really liked it back when she got on stage, just her, her powerful voice and her guitar covering folk songs... wish you'd do that again Mel
y’all complaining about her belting when there’s literally tons of trash soundcloud rappers trying to mumble out their garbage music. this girl actually has talent , unlike some of the other artists in the entertainment industry.
And her belting is because it's in the ORIGINAL SONG!
I actually love it when she sings loudly i think it sounds amazing
I agree with you. Soundcloup rappers like XXXTENTACION, Lil Peep and Lil Pump is the type of artists that is the reason why the music nowadays is so shit
@nadia brooke You can’t refute a criticism by pointing out that something else is bad in comparison.
also the guy in the original is belting his vocal chords out for the entire album too
2,000 view!! called it!!
She is so seriously beautiful, I could listen to it all day.....

too bad she didn't do the whole song :( but I'm still glad she did :) it's my favorite song ever

First I watched her cover of "Broadripple is burning" and then I find this. Melanie is 2 for 2 tonight.
The way she hits the la di dahs with such angelicee always tremors my throat and waters my eyes.
Not a fan of hers but this is a worthy cover for sure. Chills, man.

YESSSSSSS I NEVER KNEW SHE LIKED NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL
lol my brother listens to NMH and I listen to Melanie, found this and omg
i don't understand why there is so much unnecessary hate for an amazing cover by an amazing artist

I'm such an idiot. I liked the video in the first couple minutes then later went to go like it again cause I forgot.
here are the real melanie fans ♥ ️
Beautiful thanks nmh!
idk why some of y'all are grossed out but i thought this cover was nice. a rather good cover of a pretty great song
Brave performance. This is a cover.
Amazing
I don’t hate this but I think that the flat 3 over the 1 chord is very important to maintaining the emotion from the original.
4:26 best part. You're welcome
Brave choice for a cover from an aspiring pop artist. You did great.

"HOLY SHIT!!!!"
the actual Anne Frank
What is that supposed to mean? ehh
this song is from the album “In The Aeroplane Over the Sea" which is about Jeff Mangum saving Anna Frank from death.
I'm sorry but, the Anne frank from WW2? I probably sound very dumb now, as far as I know there was no Jeff mangum involved in WW2 Eimy

i cried a little
Gente! Essa menina tem bom gosto! Belíssima música! Great!

i read the uploaders name as 'its meth banana'
i'm not too into her music, but this cover is really good.
feel the bern
I like this cover better then the og song
Bad opinion, my man.
Ruined oh comely for me
I know covers don’t have to sound the same as the original, but I feel like this loses all the emotion the original had. Feels too like.. idk. Clean?
???
Ouch
stop
Why
what?
I almost like this but the constant yelling and then getting quiet again is a bit much
entropy that's how the original song goes, no? 😂
