    A very timely video! On a camping trip at Xmas (NZ), we had access to a beautiful beach with 2 lovely forest walks. I am fortunate to have a hound that I trained to walk off-leash, but rabbits were in the area, so being extra careful, she was walked on-leash. She loved the beach but once in the forest, she kept trying to turn back! I put her boots on thinking she had sore pads but that didn't work & treats have never worked. After a frustrating 30 minutes of walking, stopping several times to ask her to comply - I unclipped the lead, where upon she immediately trotted through the forest with no problems or reluctance at all!! What a bossy madam!
    Your new video place is great, but I'm sure you'd be more comfortable on the couch! 😄

    We adopted last summer and always have a lot of freezing when walking from home, walks are a lot easier if we get in the car and go somewhere, but as soon as she works out we are heading back towards the car she will freeze. Now we have a large number of different walks we can do locally and we alternate between them all and we will do the same walk in reverse and with variations to keep her on her toes and give her less chance to predict when we are heading back to the car. She loves being in the car, she willingly jumps in and out but on return home she stages a sit down protest and it can take sometime to persuade her to get out and come indoors. If we try walking from home she will stop by the boot of the car and refuse to move. We call her Devon the Diva Dog, or when she's reclining in the boot refusing to get out for anything less than cheese or chicken she becomes Naomi Campbell. 😂 She is quite hysterical, she's quite talkative at home when she has decided it's time for food, walks or attention, starting with tiny whimpers and ramping it up notch by notch to full on barks, yaps and growls accompanied by leg kicks (lying on her side the whole time) that look like a toddler tantrum. Our previous dog was a JRT who lived to 15 yrs and a greyhound has been a very steep learning curve! She almost has us completely trained now.

      You dog antics made me laugh as it reminds me of my hound. "Diva Dog" - a perfect description! Occasionally, my hound has got in the boot when we're not actually going out, but then flatly refuses to get out because she wants to go somewhere. Or, like you, we've driven somewhere and finished our walk, but she refuses to get back in! 😄

      Greyhounds I have found over the last decade or so, are a combination of 10% bat, 10% kangaroo, 10% sloth and 70% nutter. Being a "diva dog" reminds me of how Daisy was, with copious amounts of side and stink eye when she didn't get her way ;-)

    • @jwcaninecare
      @jwcaninecare  21 день тому +1

      I'm glad to hear she finally trained you! it could be she is comfy in the car by the time you get back and doesn't feel the need to move! however its also possible that there is some minor discomfort starting up from having walked and she doesn't feel like jumping out as a result. I've started travelling Floppy and Gandalf in the space where the back seat goes but with the seat folded up, so its lower to jump down. Floppy seems much more willing to get out after a walk when its not so far down, so there must be some difference for him.

      @@jwcaninecare That's food for thought but this is the dog who does her zoomies up and down the stairs then leaping from the landing through the bedroom door and onto my bed some ten feet away and then off again in reverse back down the stairs, she's an absolute lunatic! 😂 Our bed is about as high as our car boot and she leaps on and off it no problem. We have fold out stairs for the car boot but she's not once used them so now we don't go through the charade of getting out, unfolded and secured in place for her to jump over them into the car. 😂. She's mad I tell ya!

    Yes, they can have very different personalities. We had a girl who was used for breeding and probably hadn’t left the kennels in years based on her nails and physical condition. She would totally freeze on walks, overwhelmed even in our small country town. She eventually came to enjoy walks. Our Marcy loves her walks more than anything, she would keep going till she fell over if given a chance. Finley is less enthusiastic, as far as he is concerned once poos and pees are done the walk has served its purpose and its time to head home for another nap!

    Thanks Jill, another great video. So true about the paws, amazing how grit sticking to a wet pad can be so uncomfy.. I also wash my dog's paws after every single walk cos you just don't know what's out there.. it only takes 5 minutes. My new little fella doesn't like the rain but he's ok with fireworks? It shows how they've all got their own personalities, that's something that people who don't have dogs don't always understand , that they really are different.
    ... I love the close-up shots of their faces when they look huge on the screen😂. I really wanted to give Gandalf a big kiss but of course he was only on the telly!! And Giganticus Flopzilla 😂 looked real big stood next to you at that angle. Very cute.. I love the long long limbs, I used to say that to my lurcher girl: "long limbs" in a funny voice..aw...sadly missed, 2 years this month and it feels like yesterday.. you know how that is Jill. 💔 Anyway nice to see you and the gang. 🐾 Keep warm 😊🌹

    Thanks for the laughs. I thought this was one of the best videos (for comedy value).😆. I love the dogs’ antics & Jill working around them. Good information too. My boy usually likes his walks & sometimes is slow or less eager. It isn’t clear why but I always check his feet, but now I will check clothing too. He does have some old injuries (a broken toe that was never fixed & an intermittent sciatica like problem, both on the left side). Surely it would help the dogs if they didn’t always have to race anti-clockwise? All the strain is always on the same side of the body and varying it may not eliminate injuries but might help a bit. Another odd thing is that whilst he seems not to mind coats on walks, if I try to put one on him for him to go into the garden (when it’s very cold or wet) he will then refuse to go out! 😆🤔. That doesn’t make sense to me. 🫤

    Thanks very much for this. I've had my grey for almost 8 years now and she has always just stopped on walks, often repeatedly, even though she is very keen on walks (unless it's raining). I just think of her as my Zen dog, because this really only happens in good (sunny) weather and she seems to be just enjoying the moment. So I try to follow suit, but there is a limit. We live in a quiet rural area so there isn't a cause of stress that I can identify. I never considered harness problems so it's good to know about that.

    My old boy glues himself to the pavement whenever he realises he is on the way to the vets. He knows all the routes! We have to take him by car now! And he has strong preferences as to his walks , he lets you know if he wants to go to the park, or if doing a street walk which corners he wants to go round, and will refuse often to deviate from his preferred direction.

      Yes, corns is sadly a possibility for a medical cause

  • @ottomondo1368
    @ottomondo1368 25 днів тому +2

    Another common problem is that the dog has developed, or is developing corns on their paws. Greyhounds do not have the fat layer most dogs have between their pads and the bones in their toes. No cure for corns, just periodic hulling and boots. The boots are essential to eliminate pain.

      A British orthopedic surgeon developed the flexor tenectomy procedure for treating corns in greyhounds and I believe it is now standard of care. My grey has had 3 paws done (in Canada) - it is very easy surgery and the corns generally don't recur.

    I am really hoping you can help me Jill. My greyhound Madge is getting me up every morning around 4.30 am to take her out for a walk, and she does her business. I do not have a garden, which is why I have to take her out. It makes no difference what time I take her out for her last wee at night, and she has done this for the last 5 years! I am 68 years young, but it is really making me so tired! I walk her about 4 times a day, and she seems fine, as she eats her food, and drinks a normal amount of water. Do you have any ideas how I can get her to wake up later in the mornings? She sleeps on the sofa downstairs, and it is dark, as the curtains are closed, and no light gets in. Blessings from Jilly & Madge. xxx

      Sounds to me like a habit. My hound waits until I'm dressed but I recently dog-sat another hound who barked at 5.30am every morning! When I asked the owner, she said that was her normal routine. After 5 yrs, it'll be a difficult habit to break but perhaps she doesn't need the toilet but she's cold or lonely?
      Would you consider a dog bed in your bedroom? If she can't or won't manage the stairs, she made just need reassurance from you. Or consider using a crate at night.
      If you're sure she needs the toilet, my approach would be: At the first wake-up call, quietly tell her "no" and "bed" - you need to remain in bed too. If she doesn't know what "bed" means, work on teaching her this during the day with treats. If she needs to go out, don't make a fuss and don't make it exciting. Walk the shortest distance you can, ie to the end of the drive, or to the nearest grassy lawn. Tell her to go "pee" then return directly home and back to bed and tell Madge "bed" too. Consistency is key.

      It migh be the times she eats, that is if she has something to eat late in the evening. With Miss Moo, if she eats anything after 11pm you can guarentee there will be a squeak that revs up to a loud woof around 2 AM, and we also ften have to make sure she does something at bedtime too otherwise she just trots off and steals Jimmy's bed and then you get the 2 AM alarm call.

      Unfortunately if she needs to go, you do have to go out, whether its to a garden or a walk. if you have to go out for a walk I would work on making it as short as possible - function not fun! to try and adjust the timing of it, personally I would move her 2nd meal earlier and insist on a last outing before bed. I get mine up to go out at 11pm or so before bedtime. Even if she goes at 9pm, thats still 7hrs til she gets you up, so she is lasting quite a long time (Sometimes with Meg we go to bed at 1130pm and are back in the garden before 2am). So to move it to a time of day you find easier to cope with i would be looking at trying to shift the bedtime routine later and the last meal earlier, so it goes through her system before bed. Of course, after this length of time its probably also a habit, so at the same time you will have to overcome that unfortunately.
