Thanks. I'm doing this 2-hour "Introduction to Wildlife Photography" workshop tomorrow on Zoom www.girishmenon.com/wildlife-photography-courses-for-beginners-bird-photography-workshop-lessons-classes-tips-webinar I do it from time to time 😀
Im in the market for a camera to replace my Nikon D7000. Ive never owned full frame digital, I shot film for 10 years before digital. I absloutely despise electronic viewfinders. Should I just buy the D500 and be done with it? I love photographing wildlife and especially birds. I make money photographing cars and dogs mainly. Thoughts?
Only the top-of-the-line mirrorless cameras suit wildlife photography, and they don't come cheap. Middle and bottom-of-the-line mirrorless cameras aren't cheap either, but are useless for birds and wildlife. The D500 is still a relevant choice, but you'll have to acquire it from the used camera market as Nikon have discontinued it.
Good info ! I've been shooting the exact same setup .... but with different settings, so i'm looking forward to re-shoot birds to get (hopefully) different results.
You have a little button on the camera body around the lens mount, close to the button that you press to mount and unmount the lens. Press that and turn the dial at the back that you use to change the shutter speed 😀
My d500 can only read my cfexpress card if NOT fully inserted -- if I fully insert it says err. if I leave the door open and the card not fully inserted it works?
The camera is so good that I purchased a brand new one as a backup. The best autofocus system ever built by Nikon. BIF? there's nothing better out there. I do have the Z9 and the Z800 PF. The D500 locks into autofocus in a snap of a second and does not let go for the rest of the tracking, even when you have a busy background behind the BIF. The Z9 is not as good and still lacks behind the D500 on that matter. I wish Nikon launches the D7 with autofocus sensors spread all over the viewfinder. theMulti-CAM 20K 153-point AF system fits the width of the D500 frame. That is the difference to the D5 (has the same autofocus module in it) which I purchased brand new and sent back. You have to put your BIF on the center all the time and when you try to recompose like I do on the D500 the D5 loses focus. There's not enough sensors spread to do that. I have heard that the Multi-CAM 37K autofocus system on the D6 it's even better. However, Nikon insists on having the sensors in the center of the frame. No, it did not spread 1.6X to the side like they say. Tell me about "funny" marketing from Nikon... Remember when they have made a big splash about the Z6 and the Z7. LOL what a failure at the time! The sensor distribution on the D6 has the same "scale" compared to the D5. It's not enough. Had they spread more sensors into the frame like the D500. I would've moved to the D6 in a heartbeat. Hopefully they will realize that the Multi-CAM autofocus system is superior to reading pixels on a mirrorless sensor and will not kill the DSLR pro line. They have registered the "Names" D7, D8 and D9 when they launched the D6. Let's see what happens. Meanwhile, let's have fun!

The D500 is not a full frame dslr. It's a crop sensor camera.

Do you use Back Button focusing?
I do try it from time to time but eventually go back to the default way 😃
Good explanation. Nice photo work too
Thanks for watching and typing an encouraging comment. I appreciate it 😀
Excellent. Do you ever use auto-ISO + manual?
Auto ISO + Manual doesn't give me good exposures for prints, so I don't use it. Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it 😊
I jus got my D500. I cannot find where to set it for AF-C instead of AF-S. Can you help please?

You may have to show it to a service centre and get it repaired
Super stuff...so much to learn
Thank you!
