After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. I also have never seen this is the US, but I push a regular shopping cart just fine. It's actually pretty easy.

I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.
I love to wonder what the other shoppers are thinking when you are struggling to reach something and Shaun is just standing there laughing and videotaping.

I was watching the people in the background too. It was hard to judge what they were thinking, but people watching is my favorite sport. Maybe it is theirs as well.
I wish they had these carts in the US I would love to go alone to the store. I'm currently getting a shopping harness for my service dog so he can carry some of my lighter items while I use the basket for heavy stuff. I miss being able to go to the store alone. Its frustrating having to rely on someone else to help u
Yes-I’ve only seen these a few times in the US. The larger stores tend to have motorized shopping carts but they’re no good for wheelchair users.
I have *never* seen these in America. Sad how the accessibility just isn’t there. While this may not be a great device for all, it’s not even like the attempt is there.

I think it's because there's a girl at my school in a wheelchair and I was afraid to ask her questions but I once still curious and your videos answer a lot of my questions about what life is like in a wheelchair
I don't no you or your class mate who is a wheelchair user. But if you show your interest to her and ask her questions which you might have, I'm sure she will be happy to answer. I'm a wheelchair user and I don't mind questions about both my Wheelchair and health issues, infact it can be nice that some has cared enough to ask.
I would suggest you get to know her. Become friends. Im sure she will open up when she feels comfortable. Really glad my videos help.

I find your curiosity and respect for your classmate beautiful. I hope you all end up friends one day. These videos are helpful but remember...everyone that is disabled is different. The reason they are disabled, how they deal with it, mobility devices and things like that are different. She could be experiencing a lot of different issues depending upon her cause of disability. I don't need to tell you to be open and gentle. You got this!
I use one of these trolleys all the time & luv it. It makes my shopping so much easier. I can now successfully shop. I can safely say I haven’t had any problems at all. I do have limited strength due to muscular dystrophy but it has enabled me to shop independently. Sending Positive Vibes from Australia. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍

I think I read somewhere that Trader Joe's has started putting these in stores, but most stores in the US don't have anything like this
Ive heard the Publixs stores have them but i don't know how many i live in canada and that's the only stores I've heard that have these types of carts in north america

We have them at Walmart here in Canada.
I tried using one of these once at one of the other major supermarkets & my main complaint was that it badly scratched my chair where it fixed on. I now use the basket on my knee ❤️

When I go shopping in my wheelchair. I’ve learned how to push a regular shopping cart. Not very graceful at it. I’ve ran into plenty of things. . Because in the US at least where I live there is no such thing as the accessible wheelchair shopping carts.
When I don’t need a large shopping cart; i’m only getting a few items. I do use one of those little basket’s. I have luggage racks that fold down, on the front of my manual wheelchair; that I place the basket on.
Chelsea Wiseman ive seen people with smart drive use regular carts (i was in my chair and like "wow how are you doing that with no hands" then i saw the smart drive and felt like an idiot 😂) but it seems like you need a lot of finesse to do that, and i am but a noob.
I find them cumbersome, I find them more of a hinderence. I can reach less when I use them than We I don’t.

I have never seen anything like that in the US
I have only one store around with a cart like that and in love it. The basket on the lap is no option if you have to shop for a 5 ppl family. Whenever I have someone with me, we use a normal basket, but I can hardly reach the stuff to take it out again at the cashiers. So shopping by myself that one store with this cart is my favorite. Big wave from Germany.
I wish we had these in the US
I’m a support worker for adults with learning & physical disabilities. So when you’re wheeling someone who is pretty much completely paralysed on your own, these trolleys are great. Don’t have to ask for help from staff, you can just do their shopping. Can completely understand the extra weight, pushing a 12 stone male in a wheelchair is hard enough at times, with this trolley attached, it’s a workout!
As an ambulant wheelchair user I either shop with someone or struggle and use a normal small trolley as a Zimmer frame, because even the pain and spoon use of that is better for me than using these. Sometimes I have no choice but to use one on my worse days and its rarely if ever worth the effort and takes twice as long as my hobbling round the shop does just from avoiding obstacles and picking things up that I crash into
I've never seen these in the USA. However, some stores have electric carts with a large basket which are helpful for people like me who use crutches or otherwise have difficulty walking. They would probably be difficult for a wheelchair user because you would have to transfer from the wheelchair to the cart. They are easy to maneuver though and have a very small turning radius. The only time I had a problem with one was when I got myself trapped in the aisle of the veggie section and knocked over a basket of tomatoes that was sitting at the end of the aisle. Also, A couple of grocery stores in our area have online shopping. You just pick out your items on their website, drive to the store, call them when you get there and they bring your order out to your car. I've used this service for my major shopping since I started using crutches about a year and a half ago and it's a huge time and energy saver.

I've never seen a wheelchair shopping cart, like that, here in Maryland, in the U.S.A., before. I do like that there are two different sizes. BTW, I don't know what property crime is like in stores, in the U.K. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a carbiner, or strap with a buckle with you, to secure your purse/handbag to the cart, in order to keep it from getting stolen too easily.

Shopping cart theives are more of a regional/local issue, not a country-specific one. I live in central Texas & have never seen it in my local stores. However, in certain areas of the biggest city near by? Yeah......You don't even leave a purse in a cart nor just looped over 1 shoulder, it had better been hung across your chest. This is the same thing everywhere. Portland is burning enormously whereas here in Texas? We don't put up with that, nor does our Governor!
In Australia in each shopping center they have a large amount of big carts small carts and wheelchair carts.

earthandfire nah they’re definitely at supermarkets/shopping centres all over Melbourne. Can’t say every place but definitely plenty. Perhaps you’ve just not noticed if you’ve not been looking for them, cos why would you. There’s even trolleys with a large safe “child seat” like a regular trolley but large enough for a much older child or person to sit in so their career can push them and the trolley.
I live in the US and none of the stores around here have anything like that. I couldn't use on my own and would get super tired but my fiance could push me and the cart

I've never attempted to use one as I've never seen anyone use one who's actually propelling themselves (I've only ever seen people using them when they've had someone with them who's pushing them around the shop) so I've always been nervous to see of it was even possible to use one of these and self propel. This has been very helpful actually - I was also worried about how difficult it would make steering around the shop and the extra weight.
I'd definitely smash into something at some point. 😂 I'd be avoiding any crockery or glass isles for sure and maybe TV isles would be a no go! 😂 Tesco and other supermarkets have a habit of placing special offer tub things in corners of isles and them I nearly knock into them and feel awful but I have friends that don't care if they hit something in a narrow gap because they say it's the store's fault for not considering the gap needed for people!
I would recommend those collapsing grocery carts - theyre like the size of a large suitcase and stand upright. They wouldnt hold a ton but for me they are perfect for a normal week of groceries.
We had one of those carts in the shop I used to work at. It was unly used by one family but they always asked for it. I think it's awesome that the option is there for people who want to use it

I just found your channel today and quite enjoyed it. Although I'm not in a wheelchair yet my Multiple Sclerosis is getting close to the point of it happening sooner than later. I so relate to the spoon theory and to be honest I think I lost a spoon just watching you trying to maneuver around. I look forward to watching more of your vlogs

My husband used to push me in one of those if I went with him to shop, and we (he) didn't have the easiest time with it either. I was fascinated to see someone use it in the first person. I think it could definitely be made easier going at a time when they're less busy, or didn't have so many stock trolleys out, but agree with the spoons issue, and they really are just too precious.

I like the basket on the knees approach. If I need more than I can manage in a basket, I wait till my husband is with me and he is the chief trolley pusher.
I have to say I have found it so much easier and spoon saving to 'scan and pack'. I just grab the scanner in Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda now and put it in the flat bottom bag I put in the basket or on my lap. Freezer bags seem to sit on my lap/in the basket the best I think. I find so much energy is saved not putting it on the conveyor and in to the bag at the end.

I'm getting my first wheelchair this month and I've been binge-watching your videos so that I know what to expect. Thank you for this. I shop at sainburys and their aisles are wider, so it might be easier.

Got my chair and I've been out so much 😁. The shopping cart was great. Though they do seem to be touch and go depending on where you go. Sainsbury's ones are good 👍. Morrison's 😬 not so good.
Expect people to speak to you like they think you are mentally retarded , expect people to ignore you and avoid eye contact or even looking at you, expect people to move you out of their way, expect people to speak to you with a patronising voice that they wouldn't use if you were standing as if they think you are a baby. I hate being in a wheelchair it has been life changing and not for the better

So nice to always see you have that positive attitude towards everything, I know we have no choice but still it’s easier said than done, it’s req so much Love from God because it’s so easy to give up, I know this because I am a quadriplegic, I know is very difficult and it may even seem impossible at times but with Gods Love and the strength He gives us we can do this, we were made for this, your videos also encourages me it lets me know how amazing God is. This is exactly why I subscribed to your channel! Of course, I've never seen one of these in the U.S., but I live in a rural area - and we might get them one day. In which case, I'd know how to use it. My body works very similar to yours and so, it would work pretty much the same for me. Maybe they've got them in NY, Chi-town, LA.... I love when you do things about how things actually work, like the Disney ones. I've never been and always just assumed it would be as bad as other theme parks where you can't actually do anything, but it's not, and that's good to know. PS: Yeah, I love it when they say get out of the chair and walk.... Right.
I've never seen these in my area. Seems really useful if you need to pick up some larger/bulkier items that won't fit/balance in a basket. I usually have someone with me if I need to do a really big shop (or have them delivered which can be a godsend)... because spoons. It would be a nice option if you are at a store and realize you need/want something big.
I strap a bungee cord around the back of my chair and hook it to the basket, which doesn't roll back up on you once you put a few things in it. But I strap a wire metal basket from home (without a car) to my lap under my legs and around my back and then strap down the groceries. I travel a bit of a way in a city with no access transit. This is helpful especially with caregiving staff shortages

In Spain we don't Have the flat base baskets, so wheelchair users have only that trolley option when they go shopping
Love it, just to make it a little harder will throw a few things in front of you, my dad uses a similar trolley with his walker. Great work as usual
I’ve never had an issue shopping with a regular shopping cart but I like this option too.
when isles are crowded I leave my cart in the bigger areas out of the way and go down the isle. If you wanted to use it you could try leaving it to get items you want in smaller areas. Not sure if that is helpful- Im not in a wheelchair but I have vision issues which mess with my depth perception so navigating crowded isles can be tough.
I didnt even think about the visibility of those types of carts, and alot of the stores where I live and shop dont have wheelchair carts 🤔
I was in a chair for three weeks and if I didnt use the scooter carts alot of people did not give me consideration at all

Tried out the shopping cart tonight. Worked surprisingly well. It definitely helped that my husband was there though. It left him free to get stuff where I couldn't get in and not leaving me awkwardly stuck with a trolley. I'll definitely stick to using my lap or a basket majority of the time though.
I use one of these trolleys when I have to do a bigger shop but I hate how wide they are. Also I had to get some padded protector guards for the bars at the front of my chair because the trolley was damaging my chair. I get how you can’t see over the top of the trolley as that’s one of my pet hates with it. If I have to reach for something I normally unhook the trolley and can just move my chair. When I saw you use a basket I tried it too and I found it a challenge at first balancing it but once I’d done it a few times I started to get the hang of it. I like your idea with the bags with a firm base to prop on your lap as I hadn’t thought of that. Keep up with the awesome videos x

In the U. S. they have a trolley that is attached to a motorized chair.
Some places you can get a shopper's assistant to push your cart, get items off shelves, and load your vehicle. They serve not only wheelchair people, but blind, little people, the elderly, and pregnant mothers.
I use these from time to time and they've definitely got pros and cons. They do make you feel like you're driving a tank (particularly when loaded up), but the increased capacity is a blessing - particularly if you're single or have no carer (like me). They're that easy to unclip and reattach, I just take it off if I need something awkward on a shelf, then click it back on.
BTW, I would have flown off the handle at the bloke shoving his trolley past you at the till. I give no quarter to inconsiderate ableds, lol!
We enjoyed your shopping video. Thanks. I came across it while researching an easier way to grocery shop while pushing my 219 lb husband in his wheelchair. The basket on his lap gets heavy, and so does the one over my arm. I would pull a regular cart behind me, but our store (Walmart in Aberdeen, Washington, USA) only has the big heavy ones and it's exhausting. (I'm70.) If they had the small lightweight easy-wheeling plastic carts that some other stores have (IGA) it would be easy. I'm looking for a lightweight but strong folding grocery cart or hand truck that I could put one of the store's hand-carry baskets on. When he was still able to safely walk that far, we enjoyed shopping. Now what's saved us is the curbside pickup Walmart started offering during the covid pandemic. Hope it continues.
I went to a supermarket with a trolley that had a seat for adults to sit in, Ive only seen them online in America but it would definitely be useful for me as a non wheelchair using disabled person who struggles with fatigue

I don’t know if we have those in the U.S. if I’ve seen them, I probably just didn’t know what they were. But now that you showed me how to use it, if I ever see those, I might try it sometime. But using it for the first time is probably really awkward lol. 😱 Like you, Id probably just stick to the basket on the lap method. I love watching you shop, it’s so relatable!
My partner uses a chair and uses a regular trolley he pushes with one hand, and pushes his chair with the other. He said when he was newly disabled he did the basket in the lap and it just felt more cumbersome to him since it limited his reach. I think anything takes practice, and those trolleys probably just take some practice and getting used to.
I love your videos and your positive attitude, also I think it's great that they have these for people who can use them, however I could not use them with my power wheelchair there is nowhere to attach it and I absolutely do not have the strength to use a manual wheelchair. 😥
I tried one of these when i started living on my own luckily enough i had an able bodied support worker with me to help. We both realised at the time how difficult it would be to do on my own so i use online shopping instead and just do small shops on my own.
I just stumbled across your channel I’m here in the US in California. We have electric riding carts which are both a blessing and a curse. You have to shop early in the morning hopefully somebody has remembered to plug them in before the store closed or there dead and usless or your in the middle of the store and it dies. I’m not paralyzed but I do have walking issues due to my back. Theses are great for a mobile person that can transfer from a wheel chair to the riding ones I can walk so no problem there for me. There is nothing like the cart/trolley like you just used here. People have to use a regular cart/trolley to push along not being attached any where to the chair witch has to be extremely difficult if alone.
I have used wheelchair trolleys in the past with my manual chair, which I like in that situation. These days I tend to use my power chair more, which gives in my case more independence and choose to use a basket instead.

I am from Bavaria in Germany and up to now I have only seen these carts in one shop. I tried to use one but I prefer a regular cart. It's easier to push and more flexible as it is not attached to the wheelchair.

I live in the US and I just went a grocery store in the town I just moved to and saw these carts for the first time ever...it’s very rare but this ShopRite had them!

I'm from The Netherlands. Some supermarkets have these special trolleys, but they are rare. I'm a fan of a basket or crate on my lap and if I really need a lot of groceries I also bring a backpack. In The Netherlands a lot of supermarkets offer a self-scanning system. Not like American supermarkets, where you scan all your items at the check-out counter. But a hand-held scan. So you scan your items as soon as you grab them from the shelves and you can put them straight into you bag and don't have to take them out again. Saves time and energy!
I watched this video because I was thinking of using a trolley which would enable me to shop on my own but I'm not so sure now. I have arthritis in my hands and would probably find the weight too much. Thank you for making this video, its been very helpful
So for me I haven’t used one I’m a new wheelchair user and it’s Christmas normal I would do basket lap but I’m think of trying thank you for your demonstration. And advice I’ve watched a few of your videos and I was able to figure out what I wanted with my chair
Dear,0now l've seen it twice: You can disconnect that relling basket so easy to go to the regal to grap your grocery. Then it gets quite well! I found them here in Germany at "Kaufland", yesss, l finally found them there! But l like more to put myerubber-band around a basket on my knees or put a chair - tableand make a hole in it - wide enough #or baskets. Then put a basket into the hole! It'rs fantastic going! Tadaaaaa! Or, sometimes l take 2 bands and put a normal shopping - car together with my wheelchair0or with a basket, if full, to the shopping-car until it's finished. Then basket into shopping-car and with that car to paying - station. Be blessed!
Thanks for doing this as I was wondering how to use these for my Mum. I wish they would keep aisles clear and not put extra things on offer in the way. It’s like doing a top gear obstacle course sometimes. You need some driving gloves to save your thumbs 👍😀😎
We have had these carts at our local grocery for a couple of years now. I prefer them over be little trollies you have to pull behind you or a basked on your lap. Another benefit is that other shoppers are less likely to bump into you.
I never seen shopping cart like this.. I think this is a great option if you are buying many items and are not able or don’t want to have little basket on your lap..
Hi Gem, we have them in the Netherlands too. I tried it once...but I can’t get close enough to anything to pick it up. And it was to heavy for my shoulders. And I too use the spoontheory...so cost to many spoons.

At least your basket had those bars to snap onto your chair. I had to use one for the first time because I’m in recovery from a double fracture back. My husband pushed me in the wheelchair while I pushed the basket. There were no foot rests on the wheelchair so I had to put my feet on the baskets bars.
I'd love to try these. In the US, when they have accessible shopping carts at all, they went for one-size-fits-all, as in motorized. They're huge and awkward and often broken or the battery is run down.
I've never used one, but I shop in a different way to you. I put a rucksack on the back of my chair and use the scan and go things. Everything goes straight into the bag as I go, with the odd item sitting straight on my lap. No basket, no trolley, just pick them up, pay and leave.
I don’t find these too hard because I got in the wheelchair later in life so I had pushed a trolley for years and am used to the berth. Also I broke my leg years ago and had to learn to ride the electric carts. So I found the wheelchair trolley a great option
I am not able to balance the basket in my lap as my lap slopes down (if I have my bum lower it increases the pain) but what I do differently is leave my coat int eh car, only take in a small bag with I have in my pikkapocket. My shopping bag is a fold up one which I load as I scan the shopping on my way around. That way I don't get those vision issues you mention. You do get used to the width in the same way as you do when you change car. you learn quickly. I don't get too much at one time. If I need more and my husband isn't around I order click n collect or delivery. The game changer for me has been getting a smart drive. I can get a normal small trolley and use that to steer while tapping to start and stop. saves me so many spoons and pain. Pushing has trashed my shoulders .

Wheelsnoheels - Gem Hubbard I live in the US in Kentucky. I have used electric carts and regular wheelchairs with a basket that flips up and down. In August, I got a customized folding wheelchair with Smart Drive. I have Ehlers Danlos and found your channel when I was researching wheelchairs.
The US needs to get with the program. The Walmart where I’m at doesn’t even have the blue baskets anymore. If I go by myself, I have to go to the back and find one of their Rubbermaid buckets to set in my lap.
Lisa Comer I’m a part-time wheelchair user and use a Rollator walker with a seat the rest of the time. There are times when I have my husband load the chair and rollator in the car because I want to use what I need. I feel lucky if I go to a store and they have an electric cart that is available and charged. I like the baskets that stores have for customers to use.
Ive used the normal shopping carts all the time . Its pretty easy to push your chair with one hand and steer with the hand on the cart
I hate those trollies, it’s bad enough getting passed obstacles without a great big cart on the front. My casters are really big and I can’t reverse or else my casters get stuck so I have to drive all the way around the next aisle to come back.
It does get so heavy, even with just the cart it’s a lot heavier but when it’s loaded it’s exhausting. I’ve used one once recently and won’t again until long enough to forget how awful it was. Plus I do have a big NHS chair!
I also agree about the thumbs, they really hurt, it’s like wheeling on a pavement with a bad camber.

I’m surprised many in the U.S. haven’t seen these from the comments here. I live in the Northeast and see them all the time. Trader Joe’s,Target,Walmart,I think Kohl’s too and I’m sure more. That feature to lock it to your chair so you have your full upper body too move is genius!
I do live 45min outside NYC in a populated area, but its the suburbs. I don’t feel that’s the reason they are prevalent here. I wish they were everywhere for all. It’s worth calling corporate,for any store you frequent on a regular basis, to see if they can get some in,if you would like to use one 😉✌️👍
A bit OT, but if you want an umbrella that you can use, look for ones designed for use on beach chairs. By which I mean non-wheeled lounger-type chairs, not wheelchairs with giant tires, etc. They have a clamp on the bottom that fits armrests (or tubing, I would imagine) perfectly. I found mine at a discount shop called Five Below. Don't know if they have that in your neck of the woods, but I'm sure there's something similar.
I never could get sorted with the wheelchair trolleys so just use the ‘standard’ small trolly, pushing the trolly with one hand and pushing my chair with the other, if you alternate hands you can get around fine 😀
I'm I my 4rh chair and the first 3 the castor caught on the trolley it was essential though as my elderly mum was in a chair too and hubby pushed her and I pushed the trolley I haven't tried in my new chair I usually just have a basket on my lap
I've never even seen those shopping carts in the shops I've been to. Then again, I'm in the USA. However, your description of it getting heavier and harder to move is exactly how I feel with the regular shopping carts when I'm walking. I like to lean on them almost like a walker but after a while, it's just exhausting. I think, since I don't have a wheelchair yet, using the motorized shopping carts has been pretty nice for me. But then you do have the issue of getting the groceries to the car and putting the cart back still.
OH! Why why why are there none of these bad boys in USA? (I’ve never seen them, anyway) total game changer! By the way, I am so grateful I discovered your channel! Seems your country has much more accommodation for disabled people than here in the USA, we are just lucky to have wheelchair ramps on some corners and when we go to Amusement park not every ride is assessable, especially the good rides, I guess it’s always a liability issue, by the way I a love your amusement park videos. God
I tried a few, got stuck in a checkout because the stores checkouts weren’t as wide as their trolleys....
Took elastic bands to keep them attached for a while, but backing out of the tight spaces they were kept in (despite there being several other types of trolley kept inside). Having any weight in them and they radically change the steering balance.
I just use a normal trolley now - though I wish there were some with fixed back wheels.
Im a new(ish) wheelchair user,in in my chair now for 7 months (still learning) and we have these trolleys at the store too,i have a love/hate relationship with them. I struggle to get things out off the freezer with the trolley, without its no problem. Im not sure if i like them or not
Not a wheelchair user per se, but use the motorized carts provided in stores. Biggest pet peeve is that the aisles and especially racks of clothes, or other items are often not arranged in accessible ways. Can’t tell you how many corners I’ve clipped trying to navigate. They should have to test the layouts with these in mind before setting them up.
I really wish they had these in the USA because I cannot get my shopping done alone without the help of others when they have their own lives. I may consider looking at a small shopping bag for my service dog to carry smaller items for such cases so yeah. Great video though!
I’ve never seen a wheelchair cart here in the USA. That would be really cool. When I have to shop alone I will slide my chair footrest under it and put one of my legs on the bar at the bottom of the cart and then I steer with one hand (my other uses my chair controls. But it totally messes up my wrist (I wear a brace when I shop) elbow shoulder and back.

Have you used one of those shopping bags that are a little like a basket but a bit deeper and you can use as a shopping bags, they don’t fop about so it’s not going to slip off or flop about, you can see what’s in there too, plus nothing to dig into you either as it gets heavier too. I only found out about them recently.
I wish this was an option in the states. While they aren’t perfect, they are a good option
