I would agree. He's a really special artist that knows the sound he wants, and doesn't care about the time it takes or pandering to anyone, to achieve that sound. Voodoo from start to finish is a timeless record that people will be listening to 100+ years from now I believe.
Love this!! The guitarist is Chalmers "Spanky" Alford. Spanky was a legendary gospel guitar player, he later played with and influenced many of of the Neo-Soul artist at the time. Questlove used him on may of his productions. And of course he toured with D'angelo on the Vodoo tour.
Isaiah Sharkey has great video on Spanky Alford ua-cam.com/video/iGrDXibO2uY/v-deo.html Or if you want to go even deeper down the rabbit hole, check out Ted Greene. ua-cam.com/video/NxfZlGHIDq8/v-deo.html
Rest in Power to Spanky - the dude that influenced all of neo soul. Dude is a gold mine of ideas, a mix of gospel, funk soul, jazz (lots of wes montgomery), brilliant player
That's a nice "homage" to the James Brown sound, Check out some of the smooth bass Raphael Saadiq puts down on other tracks for D. Quest always seems to hit a nice pocket while keeping the beat. Well done Mike. "Here's a toast to the boogie!"
I'm stumbling through this journey as a guitar player brother and I greatly appreciate your channel as a conduit to great tunes ! I am first and foremost a listener and a player second ! Love the channel been listening for a minute and proud to finally be a supporter now! 👏 much love Gideon,
Okay, I love this channel, I love D'Angelo - thank you. I'm super happy that there are several folks that wouldn't let the Spanky Alford non-mention go. Thank you all for that. Spanky's the man. But let's also recognize that none other than Anthony Hamilton is singing BGV. It's also worth mentioning that "Chicken Grease" is the little Gbminor guitar (flutter?) strum device. It was made famous by the guitarists in James Brown's band(s). This video is a masterclass.
Quest is the master of that shimmer snare drop. Saw them play at Buffalo State college back in 2003, I've seen a lot of great musicians play, but the Roots crew are on another level.
You NEED to do more videos on Spanky alford, the guitarist in this, Isaiah sharkey and dangelo. Ir ecommend the Samchamps versoions found on soundcloud, and their performance on Chris Rock of Lady. Spanky was a legend, one of the greats
Hi to your grandma 🙋 Michael, it is gray and chilly this morning in Sunny San Diego and I had NO IDEA how much I needed the Funk. 💓. Yes, now motivated and ready to play....and deal with the rest of the day. Thank you Brother. 💕🙋🎶
Another performance from D'Angelo on the Chris Rock Show is one of my favorite musical moments captured on film. It may have the most perfect and tasteful guitar intro ever, delivered by Spanky. ua-cam.com/video/s11XaUKsMU8/v-deo.html
That was bu bu bu funkeesional! The spruce goose took off and landed on that one. Dastardly dichotomy of Pino and Quest. How dare they do that to us. Woowoo I still got the flibbities!
I just found you today while I was looking at stuff over colter wall and man do you have a way of expressing things. I love your emotion that you put out probably what makes you a top tier UA-camr LOL🤣!!! I just wanted to say two songs that have given me so much are “Follow You To Virgie” by Tyler Childers and “Nebraska” by Market Junction. Now Market Junction hasn’t really been heard by a lot of people but they have to be some of the best performers out there. Another great song would have to be “Kilby Girl” by the backseat lovers!!!!!

@@Guitargate I saw them last week here in tx. Something about being in a room with that many people loving and vibing the same music is a powerful thing. EPIC
Yo Michael love watching your videos! I'm a huge fan of D'angelo and I'd like to know if a 7.25 radius strat is a limiting buy or a waste of money or it doesn't matter and I should just trust my fingers! Thanks in advance!
That breakdown, is “Chicken grease” the reciprocating guitar chord is called “Chicken Grease”. What Pino is playing is call rumbling, of course he is putting on a masterclass! Check out Prince during the Nude tour into Sign O’ the Time tour lots of “rumble” bass even more when he started the first NPG band with Michael Bland on drums and Sonny T on bass. QuestLove is a master of playing that J Dilla funk swing.

Waooo!!!....Congratulations my friend Michael!!...If you decide to react to famous singers videos in the future, here you have your best new year gift!!....Today it is very difficult to find reactors like you who have never reacted to the best singer in the world, Dimash Kudaibergen, who has 7 octaves and 3 semitones vocal range (An alien) ... Maybe someone made you a request to react to Dimash, but you have not had time .... I am going to dare to recommend that you meet Dimash, because when you do it for the first time, your life as reactor will change forever ....For example, the number of views that you have today, it will increase by 300% in a matter of a few hours and you will get a lot of new subscribers.....But when you react to Dimash, don't do it with his most recent songs ... I recommend that you go to the year 2017 and react to the song that made him a global idol ... I mean the performance he did Dimash from the famous French song called "SOS D'un Terrien en Détresse", when he participated in the famous Chinese reality show The Singer in that year 2017 ... With that performance Dimash earned the reputation of being the best singer on the planet, so I recommend you start with that one.... You can also start with the other famous live version of that song that Dimash did the following year 2018 when he was invited to the famous Slavic Bazzar festival in Belarus .... Both performances are from another planet...And I have to give you a warning: Never react to The World Best videos, because they suck!...Your life will never be the same again, after reacting for the first time to Dimash...And your first reaction to Dimash will be something very special, so I recommend that you do the best job of your life as a reactor, because that first video will be seen by thousands of people around the world, maybe millions...I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Dimash, but if you don't want to, that's fine...
Hey brother - Absolutely love your channel. Never requested one before, but thought I’d throw one into the hat. I know you’ve done Althea, and I loved the story you told with it, I’ve had a similar experience with a friend, and although I didn’t send them as much music as you sent your buddy, I did send my friend one song I thought was… moving, significant, spiritual, etc .. that song was Althea. However, I sent him the version from Nassau 1980 (5/16/1980) - the whole show is AMAZING, but this version of Althea is SO different from the version you did, far less bouncy, almost somber.. seems to tell a different story.. Anyways, I’d love to hear you break some of it down, if you feel like doing a Sequel on the song :) If not, I still love ya haha Here’s the link ua-cam.com/video/AaMCYrYiESg/v-deo.html

No that's not Angie, even though she was D's baby mama at the time, but she was way bigger woman, plus she wouldn't have been in D's band as they weren't really on speaking terms, you know, what with the baby mama drama and all. They do look a lot alike though.
D'Angelo is one of the best musicians of all time. Black Messiah is one of my all time favorite albums. and Voodoo is a masterpiece.
Not even top 1000 wth.
I dont know if I would say that about D'Angelo, but in terms of tightness of musicians he surrounds himself with some stellar people.

1:55 that F#m9 chord is what the song is named after, it is a tribute to Prince who called minor 9 chords ‘Chicken Grease’. love the video

What a band. Imagine having THAT band and Anthony Hamilton and Shelby Johnson as your backing singers. Absolutely Mental!
This is an amazing lineup Quest on drums, Spanky on guitar, Pino on bass, and even Anthony Hamilton singing back up🤯
I mean brother it’s an all-time lineup 🥴😫
This Voodoo Tour was my introduction to "Pino" and my life hasn't been the same since!!! In the best way possible!!!
That Tour was amazing. Reminded me so much of Prince in 86'.
