    Good stuff. I tie a 7' flouro leader onto my braid with an FG knot. I tie a snap swivel onto the flouro with a surgeon's knot that I roll the swivel through 2x.

    Great video new subscriber I grew up flipping eels along New England for bass.Pliers are a big help when finishing a knot and why no shock leader when rocks are a issue.Our setup was braid to a 30 lb shock Albright knot from braid to shock shock to barrel swivel.Also stretching the memory out of mono to help with the presentation is a must especially with using the small spools.keep the videos coming.

    There are so many awesome guys like Jasper in Massachusetts which is why I will most likely never leave. He's, total character, knows his stuff and really wants others to better enjoy their experience. My Dad used to come down from the North Shore (Revere) to fish the Canal back in the 50's/60's. I am just starting to get into it. My question to Jasper: After listening to Gary Loomis who is currently running Edge Rods, his philosophy is to allow the rod tip to be lighter to take a bit of the shock out of the hooks/bite, giving him the ability to use lighter line. Also, by having slower action than a typical heavy rated fast action, when reeling in the fish, the bend in the rod does more of the work for the fisherman. After listenining to Jasper, I think although the lighter line might be better, it may be too vulnerable to abrasion for the Canal. I currently have a Daiwa Certate LT 5000 paired with a 9' ODM DNA rod rated I think to 3.5 oz. What is nice about the Daiwa Certate LT 5000 is that I can take it off the small surf rod and put it on an inshore rod and fish from my Boston Whaler Dauntless 16 in the bays. This setup is nice for plugging at the Canal, but I want to fish the bottom so I need a bigger rod and reel. Part of me is thinking the EDGE 11'-6" surf rod rated for 2-8 oz paired with a Van Staal VSX 200 or 250. I want to buy quality and hopefully pass it down to my son. Part of me thinks getting a Saltiga 10000 or 14000 and a 11' ODM Jigster Extreme because it could bridge plugging and jigging and I could take the reel off and use it for a smaller rod boat fishing. I want to get good quality but have it somewhat versatile. I also have a Truth/Siegler SG casting reel on a Shimano jigging rod rated up to 40 lbs for bottom (flounder fishing). Gary Loomis wins a lot of fishing rod shootouts and part of his formula is to listen to fishing guides in the local areas and apply his knowlege of materials, configurations, fishing and manufacturing to create the ideal tool. I think if Gary or another passionate manufacturer were to collaborate with Jasper (with local expertise and can communicate at a very clear level) they could create a great tool. If Jasper put his name on a rod, I would absolutely be very interested in it.

      Thank you for this my friend! To answer your question would take a book and a cup of coffee. Short answer everyones different with what they like and how they like to fish rods in different areas. My personal answer for the canal isnt one that might be agreed with or liked but if I could fish a broom stick with piano wire I would lol. Im targeting the largest class possible. I often use tuna grade hooks and catch S*it for it but if you take a 40-50lb fish fith 20-50kts of current and wind that 40lb fish is more like a 100lb tuna. and I can tell you right now those bigger fish do some insane things the little ones dont to break you off. There may come a time when the lighter stuff is more fun but bigger fish not only require bigger gear to land them it also requires bigger gear to land them quick and release them so they survive. Sure you could land a 50lb fish on 20lb line in an hour but most likely when you release she dies quick after. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps!

    Hi,
    Just found your channel. Binged watched the vids. Good stuff. I also ordered three of the jointed swimmers. I figure $20 won’t break the bank so why not give them a shot.
    I didn’t have a chance to fish the Canal this year but heard it was legendary. I will make a point of going out there next year.
    I have a request that is indirectly related to fishing the Canal. Can you make a vid describing the in’s and out’s of fishing there? Since I’ve never been (I live in SW CT), I’ve heard that you have to bring a bike and folks sleep in their cars. What would be helpful is to know where to park, which side of the Canal you prefer fishing, good tackle shops, hotel/motel (for overnight trips), joints with decent food, etc.
    Help a brotha out!
    Peace and enjoy the holidays.

      Gus Lombardo hahaha binge watched, that is awesome! I can tell you right now if you ever Fish the canal or anywhere with Big stripers $20 is a small price to pay for a day you won’t forget! I can def do an overall video of the canal at some point! However you will learn quickly that discretion of this sacred spot means a lot to some guys here especially the die hard a and obsessed! So I need to tread lightly on what information is divulged. However if you were to come down a big part about the place is riding your bike around and speaking with the other fisherman. I’d say a huge majority of the time guys will give info just because they know you’re here. I help anyone i can especially if I’ve had a killer day i believe everyone that’s willing to get the gear and put the time in should experience what it’s like to hook up with one! I’ll see what i can do to help you out and i can always be a resource for you as well! Get down here man it’s incredible!

    Hey Jasper!, Great video! WHy the Blue Label over Pink Label? I have been using Pink Label for Striper fishing here in Maine in the kennebec River and also shore fishing late july through november. I was just curious if you preferred the blue over the pink for any reason? Thanks again for the great content! Also would so be down for a canal rod for when I make my trips back home to Mass!

    • @jaspercoutu489
      @jaspercoutu489 6 років тому +3

      Eric J Sales from my understanding they’re both really the same thing! Pink label is just newer and a portion of the revenue goes to breast cancer research! To be honest I should buy the pink label because of that reason i think i just got stuck on the blue before it was out from tackle shops and then just went right to amazon without thinking to make the switch. Both will work 100% the same! Hope that helps bro! And super cool to hear you’re fishing up there! Reading a book now about that river and it sounds like a road trip is in my future to check it out!

    • @jaspercoutu489

      Hey Ric good question. It depends if your reel is spooled with braid or mono. If your main line is braided line I would never fish without a leader just in case that fish does something iffy. Braid breaks way too easily under tension. But if you’re spooled with mono it’s kinda like your entire reel is one giant leader. Hope that helps brotha and thanks for the support!
