    Really interesting. I have a long and painful history with gold having been sold on gold by my father as a young boy. I bought gold in the 80's at $500 per ounce. It was a stupid investment for a young man considering the alternatives at that time that could have made me rich (AAPL or MSFT) or even just investing in the S&P 500. Gold is not an investment - at best it's insurance. Having said that, Mene's approach makes sense. Having a bit of bullion locked up in a vault somewhere in the event of an apocalypse? Good luck getting it - might as well just throw that money out the window. 24K jewelry you can wear makes more sense. My great grandfather kept my father's family alive during the European hyperinflationary years of the 1930's by clipping links off a gold watch chain.

      Gold is a store of value, much better at this than cash which depreciates overtime in purchasing power.
      It's also an investment, just like art and fine wine and should really be part of a balanced portfolio.
      The top performing asset class in the last 11 years, better than the S&P 500.

    • @123afekete321

      Jack Burgess Total rubbish - it is a super volatile asset which makes it highly unsuitable as a store of value. I’ll buy the argument that it’s effectively insurance against economic apocalypse, but in that scenario no point having any more than you can have immediate access to.

    I found out about menē a 2-3 years ago and I have never been disappointed with my purchases with menē. Plus when you rate a purchase they also give you in store credit as well. Which is awesome. Absolutely love this brand. Countries in Asia, like India and Pakistan have been making and prefer jewelry in 24k gold for centuries and over there any less gold is un sellable. And over there gold jewelry has been used as an investment for centuries as well. But what I like about menē is that I can get a more western style jewelry.

    Here's some more ideas:
    - Jump into wedding/engagement rings. Men are usually the one that pays for the rings, and 90% of them know what a waste of money the hunk of rock is that loses half of its value off the lot like a car. If you can actually track the value of the ring, ALL men (and even some women) would be far more inclined to purchase their rings from Menē.
    - Allow brand/logo customization. Companies could do limited edition sales of branded rings/pendants/etc. or even give them as executive bonuses.
    - Get into watches. That is one dedicated community, and collaborating with established player or even a startup to make investable time pieces that have value beyond the brand itself would be amazing.

    • @RosscoAW
      @RosscoAW 4 роки тому +1

      All of the above. They've got to be planning to do this at some point. Watches would require a larger scale company or larger brand recognition to justify partnerships etc with watch producers (I expect), but I'd love to see like that.

    Traditionally especially in Asian culture your savings account is in gold jewellery. If you go to those countries, what Mene does is nothing new. But that culture really doesn’t exist here so it’s nice to see that.
    Having pure gold or plat is great for investing but not great when you want gems in your jewellery. That’s why gold and plat is mixed with alloys to give it the strength to set a stone like a diamond. So, unfortunately that will be a part of the market they wouldn’t be able to access which actually is the majority of jewellery sales.
    If they ever did open retail locations, they wouldn’t be able to keep the 20% mark up that would have to increase. So, hopefully they could just stay as an online store.
    Overall, very cool concept, but probably wouldn’t disrupt the jewellery industry. IMO

    Gali, love your stuff. On this topic however, you are off base a little bit. Regardless of how little wear you have seen in your chain in 8 short months, your gold "investment" chain is slowly wearing away as the links rub together and move. Over time that movement is scraping away metal from your chain and it will loose weight. It will wear away over time because 24 K is so soft. If you were talking about a big chunky ring or pendant perhaps the wear would not be as noticeable to you. A 24 K chain is a huge mistake if you are wearing it everyday and never taking it off. Chains are better when made out of lower karat because those additional metals added also add strength. As an investment a 24k chain is a bad idea. A ring, pendant or earrings are a much better idea. As a Goldsmith doing jewelry repairs since 1980, I know of what I speak....Peace!

    Wow what a coincidence I was talking about this stock to my fund’s partner just the other day! We invest in mostly TSXV stocks, albeit pure primarily gold & precious metal miners (& been doing rather well of late ;)...so not invested in Mene but in my view its a very interesting concept & a very different approach to an industry that has overvalued craftsmanship (without detracting from it) to the value of the underlying metal...to me gold is a currency and as an investment jewelry should trade to this currency as closely as possible.

      Ah Gali forgot to mention I am Italian, we have fine jewelry in our blood. We should form a transatlantic alliance & conquer the other side of the pond ;). Definitely space for other market participants in this space (& I take inspiration from a ring I bough and sold at an 80% discount)...

    Dear Gali!
    There is one thing that you should improve in my opinion, and that's the sound quality. Usually I'm not thinking a lot about sound, but everything you do is so professionally fresh and I think a great sound is just you. You know, just quality. I know you don't have a cheap setup, so either it's just me or maybe its the acoustics of the rooms or smth.
    Anyways, great videos, thank you!

      By jewelry standards that's puny. Most jewelry is only 10 carat gold and MSRP has a profit allowance of at least 70%. That's why jewelry stores can afford to hold supposedly great sales and still wind up with gross margins above 50%.

    MENE markup is huge if you compare to the spot price of gold. Additionally 24k is "soft" and will wear down over time especially a ring or bracelet. Buying gold coins and bars offer better value as an investment and hedge against a paper dollar.

    How does Menē protect themselves from buying back jewelry that has been adulterated? Or how do I ensure that the jewelry I buy from Menē is pure 24 Karat, ensure that it has not been adulterated?

    • @hgm8337
      @hgm8337 4 роки тому

      Kindly explain how to adulterate a branded 24k gold chain? Melt it, mix in base metal, remelt it, cast it into exactly the same shape and size chain, and then hope that they don’t notice, perform a metallurgy test, or simply reweigh it? Is that what you are worried about? 🤣

  • @tristanolarti9671
    @tristanolarti9671 4 роки тому

    May buy the jewelry. Not sure about MENEF. Cool idea of wearing your investment but the branding needs a big push to become iconic and lasting. Tiffany and Rolex command the markup due to the branding not the precious metals. Same like Ferrari and McLaren, it won’t beat a Tesla Roadster by specs but brand is on another level.

    How much do you know about GoldMoney's strength as a company? I'm not trained to evaluate financials like you, but it seems like we should have high confidence in all of a CEO's companies to be willing to invest in one of them. I love this business model of Mene and really appreciate this video! I am trying to learn as much as possible about them and their leadership. Looks like their CFO helped run a failed AI based travel business not too long ago. Their CEO seems like a really really smart guy but I can't wrap my head around why he has so much faith in gold as an investment over fiat currency.

    Buy-back for 10% less than the price of the gold sounds like too much. The re-forging cost should be low because it's 24k already, plus they're already charging a significant margin for new jewelry sales. I'm not sure what normal shops offer for regular gold buy-back.

    I think this is an idea with a LOT of upside, and maybe they really see the "online investment" angle, but their website doesn't show it. For these guys to capture the opportunity they really need to upgrade their tech team. What they have is nowhere near what they'll need to serve volume. PS, the link isn't enough. I had already visited the site while watching the video, and then went back and followed the link, but the code didn't apply. I should have entered it manually...I'll write and see if I can get the credit, and you get your cut.
