Just placed last in my first BJJ tournament this past Saturday. The intensity completely caught me off guard. I was trying to go in calm so I didn't burn myself out. But it took me too long to ramp myself up to their level. I will know better next time.
Hey Chewy! I just wanted to let you know that I find your videos super helpful and motivating. I am brand new to the jujitsu game and it's been awesome to binge watch your vids to help me change my mindset. As a former wrestler growing up I really looked at jujitsu as a sport to help me get back into shape, but through your vids I now realize that it's a martial art and my whole outlook and philosophy on it has changed. So anyway, thanks again and keep up the awesome things you do for us!
in my gym we just go 100% everyday lol nobody get injured its not like kickboxing, same with right before comps, only difference is we do more rounds with less breaks
@@AbuHussain-sx4tt time flies man, thanks for reminding me. Actually I won third place with an armbar but it was on my teammate and he was also white belt. But man it was good feeling to win I can't lie 😂
@@danielbriceno4561 hello daniel, yes i still do it - currently blue belt. Couldnt train consistently during Covid here but we are regular since septembar. Have a competition on 9th July here in Montenegro, AJP gi and no gi! thanks for throwing me back 4 years ago :)
Hi, thanks for the good post. You say when you were younger you rolled hard all the time because your body could take it. But is it really so? How often did you train? Some competitive guys in their late teens train 10 times per week and I'd be afraid to let a teen train hard all those sessions. At least most of the 2 session days should have the other one a bit easier. Overtraining is an outcome to be scared of. But that's just my view. What's your take on this?
Hey Chewy, got a competition myself soon, 2nd one. First comp went for points and was 8-0 up 4 mins in and got subbed. Is the best strategy to go straight for a sub if you see it or play the points game? Cheers
Hi!, Thanks for the videos on bjj. I’ve been practicing bjj off/on for a couple of years, and recently moved to a different city that’s about 30min from my original dojo. At dojo #2 (new bjj gym) I felt they practice wwwaaayyyy more intensely than dojo #1 (original dojo). I’m having trouble picking which gym since I don’t really want to get hurt, but driving 30min is costly. I don’t know which one to pick.
I just realized I don't have an "A" game ha. All I know is every now and then I'll realize something that I didn't see before about my "game" and it'll be an "oh my god" moment, then I'll just make the necessary change.
Hey chewy I just started practicing jiu jitsu and today was my 2nd class my first class we learned Americanas and kamoras, today I learned flower sweeps and way to achieve them when there is an attempt to counter, we finished drills and started to roll I was matched up with anither student and I bait-n-switched him into an armbar and he tapped, I find myslef to be really aggressive and the second time around I accidentally slapped him and I feel like it was his fault because he jerked his head back but I did apologize but I was wondering do you ha e any tips to be aggressive whilst staying calm
I like how you seem to be paying attention to detail by memorizing the techniques and using them right away. getting a tap on your second class is awesome, sounds like you are well on your way. I was a wrestler in HS and got some tap very early on as a white belt with head and arm triangle/choke. In terms of aggression, I totally agree with above comment from 'follow the howl'. One thing, don't neglect learning good defense, learn 2 good escapes (or more but at least 2) from every bad position and drill them. Good luck, oss.
You might think this above comment is being sarcastic but seriously, BJJ was in part, created for the smaller man to be able to defend himself and control the bigger stronger man. Learn techniques, practice, drill etc... Good luck :)
We have a competition class at my club. Specifically designed to go hard. Open Mat is not quite the same, but if someone wants to go hard, we can. But all classes, technique only, live sparing at the end if you want.
I got my second competition coming up this weekend and at my first one I got disqualified for “slamming” all the guys I was with said is was BS And even the guy I did it tonight it was weird and that I shouldn’t have been disqualified for that but hey what can you do . 😂

Applies to Judo too - BJJ and Judo are sister arts. Your advise is invaluable to me.
BlackShadow86 glad it’s useful!

I don’t know which one to pick.
Should you go 100%? But of course while still being technical and conservative with energy.
I would argue the wrestling training game plan is exactly train hard every day haha. Awesome vid tho 😁

Professor Peculiar go to the rules meeting. now youre ahead of the game. i got dq'd for a spine lock a few years back...
Bro check the rules. If it happened more than once, it’s probably not coincidence. Best of luck to you
Didn’t really answer the question generically, but yeah...
