hey im not sure if the spring can break, if the flat head screw on the side endlessly turns maybe it is broken. your saying your doors have no spring load what so ever? id take the carb off and investigate. I never had to take the air doors off before to slide that rod out but im sure it cant be that complicated. the tricky part will be finding a spring, id call around. look up a company that rebuilds quads and ask them where to find the spring if you need.
I have a QJ on my 70 Stage 1 4-speed that's been rebuilt by a very knowledgeable builder. He actually sent me video of it on his Stage 1 and it worked flawless. However, he's got an automatic with a higher stall converter - which can mask over any slight adjustment issues. As it stands, I have a SLIGHT hesitation when I hammer it and I'm hoping this video (which he's seen and gave the 👍) will aid me tomorrow when I tackle this. Thanks!
Tighter is leaner, i had little tension on mine, no bog, but rich. If the car is light and can accelerate quickly, doors can have light tension. If its a truck, or a heavy vehicle i think it needs more tension.
Great video. A bit off topic, but how do I get the primary butterfly to stay closed until I start the car. I understand that they should be closed and then, when you start the car, they instantly open a bit and then gradually open up to vertical when car is warmed up. Mine stay always at about 1/4" open when I flip the throttle (engine cold). I cannot seem to get them to fully close when cold, by playing with the choke (CCW) or the screw kick-back vacuum can lever...
Oh thank God my secondaries weren't opening now I'm going to go out and try that little trick see if it works thank you oh and that's on my 1980 Chevy Blazer
@@UsefulEntertainment I take my lid off by April and don't put it back on until end of September sometimes October I love having my lid off. I did an engine swap and just did a transmission swap to a turbo 350 again have no problems in my carburetor in my secondaries opening so trying to get that fixed but I love my truck I have a newer Volvo but I love my truck
@@UsefulEntertainment oh I found the secondary problem for some reason the gasket is different but even when I put on the regular gasket I had to look at a problem so back at it again today
What's the tension on adjusting the allen screw and flat screw on secondary flappers?? any factory specs?, or just loosen them if flappers don't open on full throttle and bogging my engine abs alot of gas smell in car until I let go the gas!!! Thanks bud
Great video! The vacuum controlled pull off on mine is holding the secondary air flapped locked closed, even on wot (unless I disconnect the vacuum to the pull off in which case she runs beautifully). Is the pull off relay supposed to release on hard acceleration (with the drop in manifold vacuum pressure) so the secondary air flaps open? Mine doesn’t seem to on test drive. Any ideas on how to beat resolve this? TIA
I think sometimes the diaphragm can go bad in them but im still not sure to be honest. is there a little metal tab behind the choke that can swing back and forth??? sometimes that stops swinging out of the way when the car warms up and it keeps the secondarys locked out permanently. if thats the case you can zip tie it back out of the way or just cut it off with a grinder
Useful Entertainment thanks. Mine works off a spring that expands when hot and a lever attached to it and the primaries choke flap opens the flap. It seems to be good now 🤷🏼♂️
My doors are getting stuck almost like there’s a lip at the top of the carb. If I loosen the flat head screws that hold the secondary doors to the rod they will release and move freely. Any idea what causes that?
@@UsefulEntertainment FYI, I found a site that lists a lot of instruction sheets that come with carb kits and that particular setting is different for each carb and application, but for mine it ended up being 3/8 of a turn after lid contact. Every video on UA-cam says 1-1/2 turns, I tried that and I don’t think it would even open with that tension....
Mine is operating as it should buy yet I still big down... I changed the 02, EGR, spark plugs, fuel filter, thermostat, air filter, battery, and it's idling high.
@@handleton2222 you say its idling high, you can turn the idle down but if it is turned down and idles high you might have a vacuum leak causing it to pull in extra air.
Troy Hester yes it's constant, if the keys on it sends electricity to it to heat it up. as it heats up it opens, if the engine is cold & you leave the key on it will open eventually & when you start the car it will run like shit because the motors still cold & the choke is open.
I'm having trouble with my Q-jet mixture screws. carburetor has been rebuilt cleaned but one side adjustment doesn't have any affect on the carburetor. Any idea what it could be?
To the front of the carb what is that vacuum line? Where does it go to? I have the same carb I jus don't kno where the line is supposed go and I'm think it's why it won't stay running
Jt Turner I'm not sure witch vacuum line your talking about because there are a few on the front. If say if you are suspicious of a vacuum line in particular, plug it up so there is no vacuum leak and see what it does.
J Powell no problem. tell you what I'm going to be swapping a motor in my wagon in a few weeks, I'll try to make one when that carb gets swapped & tuned. what in specific are you looking for on the choke? and are you looking for how to adjust idle air mixture?
i saw you were checking out whosaidtylers channel. luckily you stumbled on to the best quadrajet channel on youtube. id advise you to go through his qjet videos, there are more than I can count dealing from all the different types, constructions, how to fix / modify all the way to read the serial numbers. he has way more skill and experience than I do so im going to point you in his direction. hope you get everything straightened out with your car. his channel is very unique and a rare find. good luck
Andrew Dean does it stabilize after a minute when it starts to warm up. if so your choke isn't working or its not adjusted right. anything more specific?
Andrew Dean sounds like a choke problem. when's the last time it had plugs, wires, cap and rotor replaced? has the timing chain ever been replacrled? that's got a 305 right
@@UsefulEntertainment I am having that problem on my Quadrajet but it's not the secondaries. It's probably the 2 lead seals inside that are leaking. If so I'm going to take it apart and put some J-B weld on it after I rebuild it that seal those seals off.
Harold. As requested, just reaching out to you on your Channel. I have a Rochester 4 Jet (7011108) that I need restored. You still provide the service.
