    According to a National Geographic (or was it Discovery? not sure) video on youtube, and other videos and articles, comparing the Jabulani to the Brazuca, the main problem was the lack of the seams. The ball knuckling is just part of football. Both the Brazuca and Jabulani are thermally bonded balls, but the Brazuca does have deeper seams, where as the Jabulani has very shallow seams. The total seam length is also shorter when compared to the Brazuca. Also, it's possible the people that were testing the Jabulani didn't take into account the high elevation of play. Higher elevation means lower density of air. All this adds up to the Jabulani having a much more unpredictable flight pattern, making knuckling difficult for both goalkeepers and shooters. The Brazuca addressed all these problems, plus is custom made to handle both the rain, humidity, heat, and cold temperatures that Brazil's vast land offers.
    wow, I sound like a big ad for the Brazuca. Oops.

      Thechad201 you are not kicking the ball in to orbit, but approx. Up to 10 meters and at 10 meter there isn’t a significant difference in air density.

    The Jabulani is my favorite football. Yes, it can “move” oddly in the air due to it’s more curved surface when kicked the right way. However, you can do the same thing with other footballs when kicking them the right way. What other footballs cannot do is “knife” through the air straight like the Jabulani can. Other footballs are considerably unpredictable when trying to kick straight. However, the Jabulani is much easier to kick straight. I think that is an improvement, not a handicap.

    "How can a ball be too round??".. well. you don't want the ball to be too round and smooth. When a ball flows through fluid there is a critical velocity at which the wake behind the ball and the drag force acting on the ball sharply decreases. The decrease in the size of the wake can lead to a sideways force, a vortex, that makes the ball deviate from it's path. The "magnus effect" is what allows footballers to curl or "bend" the ball. The vortexes also appears in these shots, but they are small and in numbers. They cancel each other out. When you don't curl a very round and smooth ball, the vortexes become powerful few.. and dictates and changes the flight "at random".

    Well no one had trouble with it except the bad players who can't score, like Lampard. After all, the Germans, Uruguayans, and Dutch could control it, and they were three of the four semifinalists. Obviously the ball was no problem for players who can actually play the game.

    • @TheLordoftheRavens
      @TheLordoftheRavens 10 років тому +7

      Aurangzeb Khan Have you seen him play? Good players in his position are Xavi, Pirlo, and Schweinsteiger. Players who can do more than the basics. Also, Lampard doesn't even play for England anymore. He can't even start for a side that got knocked out in the group stage. So you obviously don't know anything about football.

    • @TheFoji8
      @TheFoji8 10 років тому +31

      Lampard is the highest scoring attacking midfielder in the premier league. I'm not saying that he is better than schweinsteiger or xavi or pirlo. All I am saying is that he's not crap. Anyway, schweinsteiger is a holding midfielder and xavi and indies to are playmakers.

    • @TheLordoftheRavens
      @TheLordoftheRavens 10 років тому +4

      Aurangzeb Khan I never said anything about the Premier League. Since this is a World Cup video, I am referring to Lampard's performances for England, which have been far from spectacular. I don't watch the Premier League much, but I'm sure Lampard is decent there. However, like many English players, club success does not translate to national team success. It's probably because Lampard isn't surrounded by skilled stars when he plays for England like he is on Chelsea.
      In this video, they used the ball as an excuse for bad playing and missed chances. Well good players had no problem with the ball. Lampard was not one of those good players. There was nothing wrong with the ball. Only the losers used it as an excuse for their bad playing.

  • @possumverde
    @possumverde 10 років тому +4

    It didn't "work" because apparently no one with knowledge of basic fluid / aerodynamics was involved with the R&D...One look at the "new" design by someone with such knowledge and the drastic effect it would have on the ball's flight characteristics would have been evident without even requiring that one be made and physically tested...but hey, it does have better "bounce" than the old design...
    edit: It can be adapted to but it really seems like an unnecessarily drastic shift from something which already functioned well...somewhat like removing the dimples from golf balls or the seams from baseballs...Had they simply used the thermal bonding technique while keeping the original layout of the "seams" it would have been much much better and more readily accepted...

    Do not reinvent the wheel.
    Football is a sport filled with uncertainty, the slightest change in the ball itself can makes techniques trained in a lifetime becoming useless.
