It didn't "work" because apparently no one with knowledge of basic fluid / aerodynamics was involved with the R&D...One look at the "new" design by someone with such knowledge and the drastic effect it would have on the ball's flight characteristics would have been evident without even requiring that one be made and physically tested...but hey, it does have better "bounce" than the old design... edit: It can be adapted to but it really seems like an unnecessarily drastic shift from something which already functioned well...somewhat like removing the dimples from golf balls or the seams from baseballs...Had they simply used the thermal bonding technique while keeping the original layout of the "seams" it would have been much much better and more readily accepted...
