You know that AMC Inline-6 is a great engine when it works so well after sitting for years, without an oil change, etc. Just few fixes and fresh gas and it goes! That's the best Jeep engine of the bunch :)
The oil pump pressure bypass valve was stuck and needed that little rev to get it freed up. It's always a good idea to keep a close eye in the oil pressure gauge when you are getting an engine running that has not been running in a long time.
I have a 95' Jeep XJ in very similar condition and am looking forward to this series. It is my daily driver and it needs major restoration, so hopefully I can learn from you guys.
The 4.0L just never dies, mine has 254k miles and still running like a champ. Also changed my fuel pump not long ago. Haven't had any issues with it for the 2 years I've owned it. My dads recently went over 300k miles and its head finally cracked, had it rebuilt and it runs great.
My Jeep is similar 1996. I have changed three of them in the last 20 years. It's easier if you lay like you did towards the driver side and past the axle that way you can prop yourself up in a recline position. Disconnect the wiring harness, remove the clamp and hose at the tank. Put the fuel hose thru one of the brackets on top by the tank to keep the fuel from draining. The whole unit can now be pulled and worked on a bench. Old fuel should be ditched and the tank cleaned as much as you can. If the tank is rusted it will screw your pump after several months as the strainer will get clogged. The oil pressure sensor is cheap and can be changed easily.
235/75r15 tires are a common "upgrade" on these Jeeps because they are easier to find. Search Craigslist or your online Classified of choice, you'll find 235s all the time, but 215 are pretty rare.
@@the_young_misfits_8114 I didn't say that. I said it is common to go with a 235/75r15 because they are easier to find used. For me, at the time, it was significantly cheaper to get used 235/75r15 tires over buying new stock tires. I didn't see an adverse affect on the jeep. the 235 make your speedometer read slightly wrong, but not enough in my area to worry about.
MyLonewolf25 My Cherokee is not clapped out, it is actually in great condition. I just cant get rid of the death wobble. I have bought a new track bar, steering stabilizer, tie rods, new axles (i wanted the 3.55 gear ratio instead of 3.07 the comes with the 5-speeds) and all the control arm bushings. Ball joints seem good, but they're next. what else could cause the death wobble?
You blew a huge chunk of sludge through your oil pump. You got lucky, and probably did a year's worth of damage to that engine in the 10 minutes before that happened.
I’ve had a 96 for over 3 years now and I daily it and beat on it on the weekends and I can safely say that those motors are bulletproof with all the crazy stuff I’ve taken it through 😂
You know whats funny this is the cleaner then any of the XJs ive ever owned lol. All my jeeps have had no rockers nor the rear lower panels behind the rear panels they all where missing the floor in the tool storage area under the rear seat and had massive holes in the floor both sides
I have two of these also, great vehicles, but one is for sale,...in the midwest,..they are truly one of the original indestructible vehicles of our time,..
Dump the oil and add a can of Seafoam in the crank with the new oil. Drive it for about 100 miles and drain. Gonna clean the crap out. Will last longer... probably! change all fluids (brake, coolant, diff , trans and power steering). Cheap insurance. Good luck.
No damage done to that inline six. It just wanted to sound like a diesel for a few seconds. And now that the Jeeps dream finally came true, its ready to have fun off road. :)
I wish you would make a video repairing and working on my car. Every other repair or maintenance video is shot in bad light or its just the guy the whole time or the camera isn't even pointing at the part they are fixing haha. I love your videos. Keep it up

You cannot beat a Jeep with a 4.0L. Seriously you made a great choice.
Can confirm.
The 4.0 is by far my favorite engine
D Money I've got 208k on mine doesn't leak a drop of oil, It knocks on cold start, misfires, overheated it like 8 times and still runs mint
Furness Prime you are so right I love the 4.0’s
Too bad everything else on it fails so much lol

Straight 6, 4 liter. Best designed engine ever.
You guy are lucky. Most trucks and suvs you have to drop the fuel tank to get to the fuel pump.
Old Jeeps are so simple. took my Cherokee apart with a couple wrenches and a screwdriver
Older cars like first gen. s10s have a mechanical pump mounted on the engine block, so they are easier to replace and more reliable
