  • In the Video: To close a group antenatal care (GANC) meeting, women dance and sing about healthy childbirth. Participants in Benin appreciated the social support they received from providers and peers in GANC.
The WHO recommends that pregnant women in highly endemic areas for malaria receive at least three doses of intermittent preventative treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). Despite this, coverage remains low at 32%.
The GANC approach brings a group of women together to receive care, resulting in higher quality of and greater retention in antenatal care. In Kenya and Nigeria, GANC has been linked to higher IPTp uptake.
MCD’s team in Benin found that pregnant women who participated in GANC were not only more likely to attend antenatal care visits, but also to take the three recommended doses of IPTp.
