    🙋‍♂️ So, I created a game in Unreal Engine in less than 24 hours with 0 prior experience... I have to say it was... interesting, to say the least
    I knew this challenge might be hard, so I decided to use as many things available that unreal engine offers. Which lead me to learning chaos vehicles and using megascans.

    Im curious on how you choose a workflow for somethings like this or in general. Im fresh to game dev, made the fps from Unreal Sensei's tutorial with shooting targets. Id like to make a first person roguelike (similar to risk of rain 2) but am unsure where to start. Im not even sure on things to look up to progress or what to tackle first.
    Timelines also throw me off. With a game in 6 months, what takes up a significant portion of time? Is it something where you could spend an entire day making a single component of the game function?

    • @problemsome
      @problemsome  11 місяців тому +3

      Very interesting question.
      When developing a FULL game it makes sense to ensure the core gameplay loop is solid. Basically ignoring the graphics (for example using white boxing) and focusing gameplay, in a shooter for example that would be the gun feel and general combat.
      Regarding the timeline, it really depends on how the project is handled and how big the team is. When I work on a game solo I like to spend my day working on hard and easy tasks, and not go days where I only work on fun/easy stuff. This kinda approach helps with not burning out and not avoiding the hard stuff too much.
      Wish I could give more info but this kind of question could fill a whole podcast episode lol

    the thing is, I dont like to use ready to use templates in order to progress in game.. I know its dumb, but I like to be able to do the stuff on my own or at least know how the template was developed. But if i do so, i lose motivation too quickly because i dont see enough progress. My ADHD doesnt make things easier too lol
    but nice end result! Its better to not always reinvent the wheel and actually use the stuff which is available.

    Hi, I would like to ask for your advice. we would like to create a 3D game similar to outlast 1 (slightly shorter and smaller) in unreal engine 5. Would this hardware be enough for us?
    graphics card 4gb, NVIDIA rtx 3050
    processor intel core i5 11400 tiger lake, 2.7hz to 4.5hz, cache 12mb
    ramka 16gb, dd4, 3.2ghz
    thank you for any advice and I wish you much success.

    • @problemsome
      @problemsome  Рік тому +2

      Unreal Engine 5 uses more gpu power, espescially when you have new features like nanite / lumen running.
      Recommended gpu for UE5 is 3070, rest of your setup seems to be good enough. So what I recommend for you would just to try it and see if its lags. If it lags the bottleneck will be your gpu most likely.
      You could also always use ue4 which is less gpu intensive.

    • @Madbandworld
      @Madbandworld 9 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, pretty much you can create a gta 5 too. Our office has a gtx 750 and ue5, and we can create high graphics games that run on cinematic settings. Just the problem is long shader complie time and if you don't optimise the project well, it can lag much. Else, the lags are usually low

    Awesome video. What is a good frame rate for a game? I was thinking around 60. I had a first learninh go on making a simple map and was running at near 200 . Could that burn out graphics card due to running it harder.

    • @problemsome
      @problemsome  Рік тому

      There are quite a few games that limit the frames depending on the monitor refresh rate (maybe this could be a solution for u). I think having uncapped fps is a good default setting but when shipping a game it does make sense to offer a few settings like a manual fps limit (for example some people might prefer lower fps for more consistency or gsync etc). Overall you shouldnt be worrying that much that your graphiccard will burnout, I think that could only be a concern when your GC is being overclocked.
      Most common fps limits are 30, 60, 120, 144, (188), 244. Anything higher is almost unnecessary because people rarely have 244hz+ monitors
      Not a an expert in this but just my overall opinion. Glad you enjoyed the video!

      @problemsome Thank you for the reply. My main concern is running unreal 5 due to I am using a laptop. Its 3070 graphics card, 16g ram n i7 .Good laptop for price but not high quality motherboard etc and ssd amount is 512g .Hoping I can still accomplish this using external SSD or fit a extra internal samsung pro one in.

    So what we see here, isn't really done in 24 hours? Because that is quite a lot for that timespan, especially if you still have to figure things out and look up stuff. Those things are real hour-hoggers.
    But then again, I'm always in too early with details. I try to tackle minor problems too early on. And I also refuse to use mega-scan assets, as you lose the uniqueness of your design. I only use mega-scans for some textures.
    As I also tried to make my own auto landscape material, but combining 2 techniques, which I haven't been able to get working 100% as I wanted.
    The initial setup of a car with the Chaos Vehicle plugin is quite easy actually. What I find more difficult, is to get a setup where you have more of a controlled drift. To this day, I still haven't found any decent tutorial/video to steer me in the right direction (no pun intended).
    I think I'm just to hard on myself, trying not to make too many mistakes. Hope I can start working on my game again, as I've set it aside for a while now, because I had to do renovations around the house.

    • @problemsome
      @problemsome  10 місяців тому

      It was done in 38h, spread over a few days. 24h just sounded better and was "close enough".
      I agree mega scans do make the game seem very bland / makes it feel like the game lacks character. If this wasn't a time sensitive challenge I'd definitely use something more unique/stylistic

    • @problemsome
      @problemsome  10 місяців тому

      Good luck with your game!

    • @eyeemotion1426
      @eyeemotion1426 10 місяців тому

      @@problemsome Ow ok, so the timespan was the challenge for you then?
      I understand why there are so many graphic artist in game-development. Because it really consumes most of the time. I would really love to be able to create every asset myself, since I'm more into graphic design, but that would take for ages solo. Even if UE5 Blueprints takes a lot of the programming of hand.
      And thanks, I'm going to need it. The most difficult times are the ones where you 'hit a wall' and can't find a way to pass it.
      I hope the newer versions of UE5 have alleviated some problems I was facing.
      When I have the new windows installed in my house, I want to jump back into creating my game.

      Depends on your goal. If you just want to learn general game dev then I'd recommend participating in some game jams or create little fun game projects (for example if you enjoy racing game you could try and remake the game I made here). As long as you're having fun it'll be easy to learn even when it gets difficult (contradicting I know).
      If you want to work for a big company, it'll probably make sense to create a portfolio with projects related to the subject you want to focus on.
