  • After much consideration, we have purchased a roof top cargo box to carry additional gear. This is our initial review of the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite. We have been using cargo bags but they are not very durable. While the cargo box is a sizable purchase, in the long run it seems to be a more cost-effective solution that the cargo bags - for us. Fingers crossed.

Thanks, Greg. Easy to see why you'd want one. It sure is easy to use and holds so much stuff up out of the way. One WOO subscriber says he has had one for 10 years and it's still working well. It's working out to be a good choice for us. No buyer's remorse here. Yay.

I had a cargo box on the roof of my VW Jetta years ago. It was very practical, but it cut my gas mileage by about 10% even when it was empty.

This is good to know. It will be interesting to see how it effects our gas mileage as well. Just packing gear in it is such a dream compared to using the cargo bags. So hoping the positives outweigh the negatives for this box when in use.

I went with a water proof cargo bag as it is lighter than a cargo box. Which lets me carry more stuff on the roof of my Jeep Wrangler JLU. My total weight limit is 150 lbs using gutter mounted roof racks. But I would have preferred the Yakama for all the reasons you mentioned.

Sounds like you made the perfect chioce allowing you to carry the most gear.

😂 Here a latch. There a latch. Everywhere a latch. 😉 It is a cool box. We think we will like using it.

I have a Yakima Skybox also, and its probably about 10 or 12 years old and it has been great for putting up on a truck bed rack. It has been waterproof for me, fairly aerodynamic and very easy to pack and unpack. I have used it for items that are a bit long in length and easily lifted up into the box. There has been no deterioration in the quality of the ABS and no fading either. Very well made.

Hello, Mr. Winger. This is so good to hear. You select awesome gear. The fact that you have one, and it's served you well for so long, adds an extra vote of confidence that we made a good choice. Thank you.

Hi. It looks like your crossbars mount to the side of the camper, not the top. Is that the case? If so, what kind are they? Thanks.

Hi, mah. Yes, you are correct. The crossbars mount to the sides of the trailer. We just looked closely all over the crossbar system and do not see a maker's mark. They may be custom made for/by Escapade Campers. They are very responsive to inquiries. Here's a link to the Contact page on their website: escapadecampers.com/contact

Hello! I was wondering if you know how wide the middle portion of this box is where it is slightly lower than the sides. Thank you!

Let me check... Inside container measurement, wall to wall at the center a few inches below the top lip of the bottom - is 33 inches. Wall to the center most latch is 30-ish inches.
