Me and my mate weren't even let into the Norwich branch, we only wanted to have a look, was told we had to sit down with a sales person first to see what our options were 😂 jog on
Had a few red flags when I went to see a car at Big Motoring World Enfield. Firstly they wouldn't let us into the car showroom until they asked 100 questions to check I wasn't a "tyre kicker", then threatened to raise the price of the car when I turned down their finance, then offered me £500 for me £2,000 trade in and the cherry on the cake, insisted that I needed their top grade warranty. I responded, if your car had been fully checked and is so great then why should I upgrade the warranty. Bought a car from Mantles in Royston, amazing dealership, amazing customer service and amazing car, my mate works for Norton Way Honda Letchworth who are equally amazing. Big Motoring bullet dodged!
The cars for sale will mainly be ex lease cars. They would have been courteous cars, damaged repaired, ex rental and all the other things lease cars are used for. They will have a full dubious history, most likely one key (common on ex rentals). You may get lucky and get an ex company car that has been looked after by a loving employee. But these kind of supermarket style dealers have a steady supply of these lease cars that are considered seconds and not suitable for general retail.
Never, ever ever ever ever give em a deposit. Pay for the car when you know it’s tip top and you’re 100% sure it’s what you need/want. Additionally pay for some of it with a credit card so you’ve got the might of of your credit card companies legal department behind you when/if it goes tits up
Brilliant vid Geoff. I visited their Kent Branch before they went nationwide. At the time they were focusing on used BMWs. Experienced the 'advertised car does not exist' trick and sales staff in shiny suits. The new business model does not allow customers to look at cars "unsupervised'. It's a pressure environment, walked out.
I believe the most famous method of getting your money back is the guy who bought a faulty car, after a couple of returns for faults the dealer refused any more assistance or a refund, a couple of warning letters later which they ignored, he took his evidence and requested a winding up from a court for for the dealership/UK operation, it cost about £120.00 At this point the Dealer crapped it's pants because once issued and handed over there is no recourse for them. So. Not bad, a Multi Million pound UK organisation was ever so nearly wound up for a bit of evidence of sharp practice & about £120 quid. I recall this happened about 10-15 years ago it may have been Saab UK, but that may be incorrect.
150k subscribers- many congratulations Geoff! Keep up the fab content and fighting for the ordinary man. And big motoring world. That’s a massive No. Buy an old Volvo instead 😊
Most selling cars are sharks . When you walk away with a car expect to pay £1k-2k on it . If you’re not prepared for that don’t buy . Most need a service most need a cambelt most are got rid of because the previous owner didn’t want to spend the money on it
Big Motoring World still has the toxic wideboy culture of their founder and ex-Chairman, Peter Waddell. No doubt he's done well for himself, but part of the problem is that people will ignore all the warning signs just to be in a BMW/Merc/Audi. At one stage salesmen from Big infiltrated the Pistonheads motoring forum to post praise for themselves before being caught out. That speaks volumes for their ethnics and morals. I live near the 3 main branches in Kent and whenever I see a premium car with Big on the number plate, I just know that they will have been upsold GAP, snake oil paint protection, tyre insurance, smart repair insurance and the lovely triple platinum extended warranty.
I bought a BMW from Peter when started up in Teynham kent. Brilliant deal and very helpful. Move on a few years and he had moved a few miles up the road to Bapchild Looked at a Volvo 960 . Peter gave me £20 for petrol and said take as long as you like. Lovely car but not for me. Later when they became too big I would avoid them like the plague. As soon as any car sales asks for a up front dep or a comission fee I would walk away.
You are doing great videos please continue on this subject. Used car sales are so bad in the UK. Bring people on the show so people can learn and avoid getting trapped in car purchases as no institution is interested in reinforcing the law. Used car sales in the UK is a big shamosal. After my acceptance for rejection of my car purchases I am going to claim financial and non financial damages because the dealer sold me a faulty car. Learn your rights the law is on our side.
200 point check means that they should be checking everything including all of the nuts, bolts, wiring and everything else on the car. The neighbours next door to my parents purchased a Volvo from another well known car supermarket who offer a 100 point check scheme apparently when it arrived they had never checked the condition of the brakes as they were on their last legs and the oil was right on the bottom of the dipstick.
One of my customers friends purchased a Audi from BMW, paperwork done and collection was arranged for the following Saturday. When he went to collect it he found that they had sold it to another customer. When he complained the sales man offered him outside for a fight. This chap is built like the side of a house and the sales guy looked like he would snap in a strong breeze. He laughed at him, got his money back and never went back
The 'optional final payment' is the usual nail in the coffin with these sharks, but the operation is the same, just evolving with the cars , shady crash repairs and undeclared drive train issues, just like the good old days, except the technology is more complicated
Bought an e30 and an e36 off them back when they were known as Bapchild Motoring World. No problems apart from a dodgy bush in one of the rear arms on the e36. Took it back, they fixed it. No problems here. Think they may have a lot of problems with the car finance scandal so the future not so good.
They’re appalling. Used to have LOADS of warranty jobs from them at Halfords for simple things that should have been done before sale or on their checks. I also went when buying my last car. I wanted to see two cars at West Malling. First they wouldn’t let me in without an appointment then the first car was broken and in the workshop. The second car had a flat battery. I asked if I could test drive a similar one and the response was: ‘how likely are you to buy it?’ Not very otherwise I would have come to see it. Staff completely uninterested with zero car knowledge, was like talking to a wall
knew these guys when they were still small one garage affair... boss' wife was one of my clients.. didn't stop everything you have read out being true then and true now. back then any complaint was met with physical aggression
mechanic of 45yrs here, get yourselves an independent RAC check, i have found it's the most accurate check i have seen over the years, not fool-proof, but pretty good... [ i check the cars over first, then they come in + check it over, damned close to my report...] disclaimer - all cars made after 2016 are shite, so don't expect them to be as reliable as your old car...
To be fair, 270000 used cars, theres going to be a fair few dogs amongst them. Cars are complex these days, theres bound to be troubles, thats why I stick with older cars
Why do people take any crap from dealers? £99 to reserve for a test drive? No chance! I wouldn't part with a single penny! Oh there's a lot of interest in this car! Lell if it sells before I look at it, good luck to whoever buys it! Don't fall for the usual sales bollocks! If there is anything wrong with the car, service history, they won't show the logbook, whatever, walk away!
Until UK car buyers understand that the cheapest car ISN’T the best deal they will continue to moan and complain about poor service and bad cars ! Go to a Main Dealer, pay the right money and get a proper warranty! It’s difficult to have any sympathy for dummies who buy from Mickey Mouse garages with bad reviews. Good content though 😂
Buy from chops garage he has got to be the most honest car sales man out there how he makes a living I don't know no offense I would buy a car off you to mate cheap and tatty just the way I like um 👍

I worked in the motor industry for 30 years, I'm astounded that customers buy cars from these type of car supermarkets. My advice is pay more from a franchised dealers. You have been warned.
Most of the dealers sell the same crap for which you are talking now. I got scammed by an official VW dealer so what do you expect from others. The best is to buy cars from a private seller first owner or people that maintain their cars. Dealers cars are all from auctions where most of the cars are damaged or faulty. Also, before you buy read the Consumer rights act 2015 and trading standards guides for dealers selling second hand cars. Also, inspect the car under the car, rust, engine, hidden repairs.
I think a lying car dealer is older than the world oldest profession, can't stand that they get away with it too easily, and its not only dealers, example MB S500 that was in mint condition, apart of cooling issues 😂 Lots of my friends laughed at me when I had car auctions episode in my life, and I've proved them wrong soo many times hehe, then covid started and all kinda ended, not sure how the market is now but yeah getting car from car auctions used to be less risky then from dealers ... Bdw please expose as much as its possible, the problem is real!
I expect Big Motoring World is what looks like an efficiency-seeking agglomeration business, who buy up dealer medium sized car selling networks with a view to destroying hundreds of independent dealers. The operation will probably lose money, but I’ll lay a bet that various financial shenanigans are operating which will have the end result that we taxpayers make BMWorld “whole”. The same thing is going on in parallel in motorcycle sales. The Simply Motorbikes company is a model. Bought hundreds of independent dealers, some one make franchisees but most are mixed masques. They’ve just entered administration or they’ve at least closed a large number of bike shops very recently. Rinse and repeat. It’s not only getting hard to afford a decent vehicle but eventually there’ll be far too few suppliers. The perpetrators don’t want us moving around. You don’t need private transportation in a 15 minute community.
Top tip. Never buy a car from a car super market!
Or anything else…

They also charge a £300 'administration fee' on top of the price. Total rip off merchants, would not touch them.
