I've said it once and I will say it again, if your engine isn't burning oil then you're not driving it hard enough. Go on a road trip and drive full throttle for extended period of time, you will easily go through 1-2 quarts of oil 100%. It doesn't matter if the engine is brand new, oil control rings don't work at 100% efficiency, and said efficiency falls off a cliff the higher in RPMs you go.
The B58 engine in that BMW was codeveloped with Toyota for use in the Supra, to the extent they were testing parts in Japan and sending them back for redesign if they didn't meet their standards. In my couple years working for BMW I've yet to see one have anything more than a coolant or oil leak and have seen plenty well over 100k already, the B58 is the best motor BMW has made since the old NA straight 6s by a huge margin. Don't believe me? BMW's famously have horrible resale value but you can't get anything with a B58 for less than 20-30k...
My 97 Tacoma has 270,000 miles and still doesn't burn oil. It uses about a third of a quart of oil every 5,000 miles, and the oil still has a golden look.
@ZoneProfessionalGardening stop keeping your car for ever just upgrade every 5yrs. My friend has a 2005 camry v6 the one they say is reliable and it has only given hime problems and problems and it burns oil.

Hi Scotty! Great information on these three cars. There should be a law requiring a large sign at charging stations. You can tell at a glance what the cost of gasoline is - the same should be true at a charging station.
I almost ended up with a 2017 Jetta GLI. Really nice car. Tight steering and handling. Zippy 6sp manual. Nice stereo and wheels etc. I ended up in a 2018 Toyota Corolla LE after initially going to the dealership to pick up a 2017 Accord Touring V6.

How many barrels of oil did that car use in its lifetime?
Hi Mr Gesticulation Scotty! Sending rays of sunshine and warmth from St. Petersburg FL. Well thanks to you I just bought a Mazda CX-50. Made in USA. Had a 1993 Mazda 929...loved it! Otherwise Japanese car buyer. I will keep that double sunroof open to catch the sunshine! ❤️
I had a 2019 jetta s with 50,000 miles on it. I did 5k oil changes and the one time I let it go to 10k I checked the oil and there was no oil on the dip stick. I've had 3 vw's and the only one that was reliable was my 02 diesel bug, the others were nightmares.
@caylorsirk4628 it was totalled, someone pulled out in front of me at the very last second, and I t-boned him. I will say that the jetta held up like a tank.
The B58 engine in that BMW was codeveloped with Toyota for use in the Supra, to the extent they were testing parts in Japan and sending them back for redesign if they didn't meet their standards. I work for BMW and have seen plenty over 150k without having the motor opened up, it's still a BMW it will need a coolant system overhaul at some point and you'll have to fix some oil leaks but truly those motors are damn reliable for a straight 6 making 400 horsepower stock. If you're gonna get a Beemer get a B58.
@@evelynsahoe8896 I am looking at cars now...for work I should have an SUV but don't love the X5 or X3 so may just go for the 440i. I have always loved them and will buy one that is only a year or 2 old so there is still some warranty.
That VW warranty might not save you unfortunately. I had it on my 2012 beetle turbo withe the 2.0t engine and when the extended the warranty kicked in I had a coolant line blow and they wouldn't cover it . They also wouldn't cover the labor on coil replacement, the bad vacuum pump, and the bad gas cap. Also they make you pay $100 deductible once you start using the extended warranty.
Wow Scotty compare the Jetta to any ford or GM products. My Jetta was a manual transmission With 189,000 miles when I sold it. My current Passat with a V6 and 6 speed is phenomenal. I would not buy any car BUT A VOLKSWAGEN
VW GTI owner here with the same engine as the Jetta. That platform is very good. Weak points are the water pump which I’ve replaced at 87k miles. Currently 104k miles. Liqui Moly is the best thing for this. Way better than Castrol and also keeping the injectors clean with PEA products are what worked for me. And I drive it like a bat out of h…
My wife has a 2019 Jetta 125,000 miles and we just did recommended maintenance and it’s still going strong engine does burn a little oil usually a quart between oil changes not bad for a 4 cylinder they all burn oil but overall 10/10 car for the price
I haven't had a VW in years, but way back in the day, I owned 4 different models (Sirocco, GTI, Golf, Passat). All of them had strong engines capable of way more than 100K. I stopped buying VW's due to the cost of replacement parts. Bosh is expensive - every part was much more expensive than other vehicles I owned, often double or more. But they were solid cars.
Yes but, as I always say, you can maintain a car religiously and it can still have problems. Not in the case with every car but some are just built like crap.
That's not always the case. Take a BMW No matter how much maintenance you do that plastic in that engine is going to crack And leak and those seals are going to go bad and Nothing you can do about it
Massive amounts of cheap electronics, plastics, cheap going to rust and crack quickly metals not to mention engine and transmission issues makes a new/newer vehicle hard to maintain. You just can't polish a turd, no way no how.
@@navret1707the diesel versions and B58 cars say otherwise and keep their resale value better than any other model I’ve seen. 30i cars going for 10-13 grand for a 2015-2019, 40i cars or cars with B58’s consistently go for minimum 21,000$, 2017’s still going for 20-25 grand. 2018’s are 30 grand no less. 2019 and up and it’s 40-50,000 dollars. These are Lexus values, and Lexus are reliable…. Like these new BMW’s. Point is Reliability+Prestige=High Resale Value
I own Volkswagen Touran DSI 2.0l Diesel 2004 model in Europe. It is getting close to 250k kms (155k Miles). Still going strong and fuel consumption around 5.0l /100kms. So it better and cheaper than EV. Maybe better build back then 20 years ago than recently.
Ive had 4 Golfs , 2 Mk4 GT TDI a Mk5 GT Tdi 140 followed by a Mk6 GTD 170. All fantastic diesel Golfs. I now have a 2016 Seat leon Cupra 290 which is practically a Mk7 Golf R but in a different bodyshell with the same engine as the Mk7 Golf R engine detuned to 290bhp. Only reason i didn't get another Golf was i prefer the leon Cupra & its better than a Mk7 Golf GTi & costs less than a Golf R.
VW owner here, vw caddy with 2.0tdi. Drive the piss out of it daily. Service every 5000 miles. It has 400k miles on it now. Absolutely no issues with the engine whatsoever.
You are the lucky one. Many VW caddy around here they have Transmissions problem, I am a mechanic but I can’t even help my ex-girlfriend, I tried to swap 2nd for it and sold for a half price.
My daily driver is a 2013 VW Jetta Tdi with almost 120k miles. The Turbo diesel is a lot dependable than the gasoline counterpart. I use Hot Shot Diesel Treatment and it accelerates like a gas car. I’m hoping to get 500k miles out if this car.
Wow!! All the statistics showing a higher rate of issues - and the experience of mechanics must be wrong! Thank you for enlightening us with your anecdotal experience!
Scotty i’d love for you to do a video on Datsuns infamous SD22 diesel engine. 4 cylinders of fury with a whopping 61 horses behind the wheel in the Datsun 720 pickups. I own two of them. They do not die. I seriously believe they may be whistling diesels worst nightmare!
Just watched a video of an Audi in which the new engine self destructed because of a cooling system issue and Volkswagen refused to warranty the $25k engine because the part that caused it was made by a different company??
Can someone explain why Scott, refers to Mexico as a low quality control manufacturer in Jettas, when the quality control standards are set by Volkswagen?
I think he means that the cheaper labor costs in Mexico comes with the expectation that the attention to detail and care will be less based on the price that they’re paying to assemble them.
nonsense - our Puebla Jetta never have any trouble, it was just as good as any of our other VW/Audis built at plants around the world. Volkswagen will uphold the same quality standards no matter the factory location.
Proud owner of 2015 Audi S3 with 132xxx miles and still going strong!! all you have to is research and keep up with maintenance and if you patience enough most of the stuff is DYI friendly.
Electric cars arent for everyone. The price to charge for electricity depends on where your charging. Personally love my mache and the lightning isnt to bad.
Whatever we are paying for ends up being a scam either way. All those plastic car parts have a very low shipping weight and it's probably made from recycled garbage. If you shop from the freezer section all that food and meat has a lot of sodium added to it so it will hold a lot of extra water that has a very high shipping rate. With prices going way up were paying more to buy garbage and salt water. So we have to do what we are doing now, buy used cars and fresh food
My VW caddy 105PD (US didn't get these) is kissing 300,000 miles Only had an oil cooler and alternator replaced and still running It's the rare VW that works

Suspension modes….just another thing that will DEFINITELY stop working the first 30,000 miles!
My question does not have anything to do with this video. But I am desperate Why does my 4L6OE 4 speed a/t engine light come on when I kick into over drive to pass or go up a hill? Thanks for all your helpful videos.
Volkswagen insist on 10,000mile oil changes! With a TSI engine: No way! Change that oil every 4-5K. It will still have issues but will be better. Had one, never again!
Scotty bro those new bmws are trash. I got a brand new one when i can to Germany two years ago i already sold it. Im crushing these little roads in my 2020 tundra now
My first car was a 63 Beetle. I think that they sold them new back then for about $500. Had a canvas sun roof. Great college car back in the 70s. Bright red. 36 HP. The clutch started to go, so I asked a bunch of guys to come over to help me fix it. We detached the engine in the back and then lifted the back of the car up and over the engine. What you do when you don't have a car lift...
What's wrong with Hankook tires? They are a great tire! I've run them for years on my vehicles. I've never had a issue and they ride great. Are they Michelins, no, but they aren't ridiculously priced either.
@@NVRAMboi My wife has those on her Mazda and they ride really well too. There is no reason for the majority of people to use expensive, name brand tires. There are a lot of excellent alternatives. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference when driving.
The $1,900 for 10 years is only for the power train. Nobody is going to sell you a 10 year bumper-to-bumper for $1,900. You're looking at closer to $5,000 for that.
.......................................................................................The NEW VW's are BIRDS>>>Cheep, Cheep, Cheep.....I looked at a few of them and forgot the idea after giving it a little thought.
Maybe the US government should do consumers a favor by; 1. Revert EPA regulations to 2006 levels, 2. Require all vehicles that are imported into the U.S. to provide a bumper to bumper 100k warrenty factory (see what I did there?), 3. Standardize battery packs for electric vehicles across all platforms and require home chargers to be included with purchase. Then stand back and watch heads explode 😂
Someone needs to tell Scotty that Toyota uses RTV sealant in various engine components as well. You'd think he'd look that up on the internet. I'd trust a Subaru as much or more than a comparable Toyota right now. Great little vehicles.
The Fiat 500 is well known for its terrible reliability and I can't help but wonder what the percentage of them is that reach 100,000 miles vs other cars? I wouldn't be surprised if it's the lowest.

I have had several VW and they always have last way over 100k. Also not all are made in Mexico
Wow Scotty compare the Jetta to any ford or GM products. My Jetta was a manual transmission
With 189,000 miles when I sold it. My current Passat with a V6 and 6 speed is phenomenal. I would not buy any car BUT A VOLKSWAGEN
That B58 will last forever if they change the oil every 5000 and don't beat on it cold
A mechanical water pump really helps otherwise Toyota won't approve it for the Supra

What? 🙄
@@kclefthanded427 Electric water pump is superior.
2017 GTI- 160,000. . My only issue is the plastic oil pan- replaced with metal- no problems…
Any other issues? Water pump?
This is much more value than an Audi. If Audi was much more reliable I would say pay extra for it.
18:45 I think you meant "hoity toity" rather than "hoi polloi", Scotty.
That is indeed a useful feature. Cheers!
Burning oil is a big red flag for me. I'm a Chevy man myself
I've have Hankook tires on my Silverado and Caddy SRX. They're good tires. VW may use a cheap model but do your research
“Good tires” does not mean that many other tires are not BETTER. Hankook is “meh.”
Like anything else I guess. Buy the best you can afford. As I said I've gotten over 50k on 2 sets so "meh" to you
I haven't had a VW in years, but way back in the day, I owned 4 different models (Sirocco, GTI, Golf, Passat). All of them had strong engines capable of way more than 100K. I stopped buying VW's due to the cost of replacement parts. Bosh is expensive - every part was much more expensive than other vehicles I owned, often double or more. But they were solid cars.
Maintenance is everything.
Yes but, as I always say, you can maintain a car religiously and it can still have problems. Not in the case with every car but some are just built like crap.
That's not always the case. Take a BMW No matter how much maintenance you do that plastic in that engine is going to crack And leak and those seals are going to go bad and Nothing you can do about it
Mercedes junkkk yo@@spectrexr1
no shiet
Massive amounts of cheap electronics, plastics, cheap going to rust and crack quickly metals not to mention engine and transmission issues makes a new/newer vehicle hard to maintain. You just can't polish a turd, no way no how.
I own a 2012 vw jetta 2.5 with a 228000 miles and still running fine the only issue that I have to fix was the ignition switch .
BMW, beauty. Good luck with it.
BMW - Bring My Wallet.

It’s Bite My Wallet 😂
@@navret1707the diesel versions and B58 cars say otherwise and keep their resale value better than any other model I’ve seen. 30i cars going for 10-13 grand for a 2015-2019, 40i cars or cars with B58’s consistently go for minimum 21,000$, 2017’s still going for 20-25 grand. 2018’s are 30 grand no less. 2019 and up and it’s 40-50,000 dollars. These are Lexus values, and Lexus are reliable…. Like these new BMW’s. Point is Reliability+Prestige=High Resale Value
Keep your old vehicle, it won't rat you out to big brother.
But your phone will.
Your videos are an example of how to make quality and attractive content. Keep up the good work!🥶🌆🤚
I own Volkswagen Touran DSI 2.0l Diesel 2004 model in Europe.
Dealers are crap also, so the warranty is worthless
VW owner here, vw caddy with 2.0tdi. Drive the piss out of it daily. Service every 5000 miles. It has 400k miles on it now. Absolutely no issues with the engine whatsoever.
Burned over 10k on a Tiguan in a year and the mf was still leaking after TWO new motors and a rebuilt cylinder head. No thanks. 😂
You are the lucky one. Many VW caddy around here they have Transmissions problem, I am a mechanic but I can’t even help my ex-girlfriend, I tried to swap 2nd for it and sold for a half price.
Believe It or Not!
New/newer vehicles are like a boat nowadays, MONEY PITS!!
Car companies are not in business to make a quality car they are in business to make lots of money for stock holders & execs
Look at all the cheap plastic parts under the hood that will not last. I don't want plastic oil pans or valve covers.
Execs don't care about making money. They only care about their paychecks and bonuses.
That describes everything now.
17:28 of course this guy's not letting Scotty drive his car! Do you blame him? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I knew a man that owned a Datsun Wagon with a diesel engine. He was an Engineer too.
Miss those 720's. They were tough as nails.
Great to buy a extended warranty, but who wants to deal with repairs even if they are covered under a waranty.
Am glad I got a lease. At 24k miles the visor Just fell off.
Electric-assist steering is far more consistent across different speeds, different RPMs, and different car models/brands.
This man wouldn’t be a good car salesman. Too honest, would scare ‘em off. 😂
Those cars wouldn't be on the lot to begin with
Just watched a video of an Audi in which the new engine self destructed because of a cooling system issue and Volkswagen refused to warranty the $25k engine because the part that caused it was made by a different company??
Can someone explain why Scott, refers to Mexico as a low quality control manufacturer in Jettas, when the quality control standards are set by Volkswagen?
I think he means that the cheaper labor costs in Mexico comes with the expectation that the attention to detail and care will be less based on the price that they’re paying to assemble them.
nonsense - our Puebla Jetta never have any trouble, it was just as good as any of our other VW/Audis built at plants around the world.
Volkswagen will uphold the same quality standards no matter the factory location.
5:20 coolest inner design‼️
9:20 6000 miles and it's burning oil.. 🤦🏾
11:45 wait a minute Scotty, Wolks wagon isn't a premium car.., it's a plain jane ‼️🤦🏾🤦🏾

VW Jetta 2019 here, 70k km she’s beautiful
Had a 2013 GLI once. Kind of fun and zippy, but undoubtedly the worst pos I've ever owned.
I just knew that there’d be a BMW on the list even before playing the video. Lol
Someone must've told Scotty that Subaru took the #1 spot from Toyota in the latest CR reliability rankings.
Someone must have told scotty that b58s are unreliable despite evidence proving overwise
Electric cars arent for everyone. The price to charge for electricity depends on where your charging. Personally love my mache and the lightning isnt to bad.
If you live in Europe, used VW's from Germany are pretty reliable.
Have some coffee my man😅
Foster Brooks here and there!
Hyndai, Kia, and Four banger turbo full size trucks.
Why don't we start calling plastic parts, Peanut Brittle?!!
Remember the world has changed. Nothing is old school Rolls Royce quality anymore
What a learning tree of an experience ‼️🦕🦜
Jetta was one of the best selling cars in Mainland China 10 years ago. Guess they found a better alternative now...
Most manual seats move both back AND forward.
Kind of look like cruise control took over😂
would a turbo benefit from an oil catch can?
My VW caddy 105PD (US didn't get these) is kissing 300,000 miles
Only had an oil cooler and alternator replaced and still running
It's the rare VW that works
Suspension modes….just another thing that will DEFINITELY stop working the first 30,000 miles!
My question does not have anything to do with this video. But I am desperate
Why does my 4L6OE 4 speed a/t engine light come on when I kick into over drive to pass or go up a hill? Thanks for all your helpful videos.
What do you have if your car breaks down?

Bmw is the way to go. The power and luxury you can't beat them
I have to disagree with scotty vw are great cars that's what we all drive in the UK inhabe skoda and I love it
Volkswagen insist on 10,000mile oil changes! With a TSI engine: No way! Change that oil every 4-5K. It will still have issues but will be better. Had one, never again!
SALESMAN: This car is zippy.
CUSTOMER: Really?? I'll take two.
Rare sight of scotty having the owner help him record 😆
Those bikes were a blast
What's wrong with Hankook tires? They are a great tire! I've run them for years on my vehicles. I've never had a issue and they ride great. Are they Michelins, no, but they aren't ridiculously priced either.
Had a few sets of Hankook, zero troubles. My 30 year old Ciera got a new set of Hankooks six months ago. Very nice tires and ride.
Agree. I've also owned a set of Kumho tires that did well for us. Korean > chinese.
My Hankook tires are made in the US which it helps a lot
@@NVRAMboi My wife has those on her Mazda and they ride really well too. There is no reason for the majority of people to use expensive, name brand tires. There are a lot of excellent alternatives. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference when driving.
Our Hankook make noise, when speed up or slow done, kind of a winning noise
In Florida that warranty would be 3800.00
A warranty is really to protect the company.
The $1,900 for 10 years is only for the power train. Nobody is going to sell you a 10 year bumper-to-bumper for $1,900. You're looking at closer to $5,000 for that.
I smiled when you related that he took a ten year warranty.
I've bought msny old VWs after 250km everything needs replacing.
.......................................................................................The NEW VW's are BIRDS>>>Cheep, Cheep, Cheep.....I looked at a few of them and forgot the idea after giving it a little thought.
It’s time to protest the way American business spend their 3.7 Trillion dollar profit last year.
Scotty, Toyota just officially announced they’re making a new Celica. Please buy and make a video for all of us 😂
I wonder what an off-lease F-150 Lightning or Mach-E will cost.
Warranty? Can they fix it properly?
I'LL BET His STATE Still Charges Him an EMISSIONS INSPECTION FEE even though it's Electric!!!
If they don't they will find something else to inspect.
Liberals!
Ask him about all those pop ups on the bimmer
That m440i with the b58 will last 100k miles. Those engines are more reliable than the hybrid stuff Toyota and Honda is making nowadays
The best way to have a higher quality car, is to have one with manual transmission. It will go forever.
