Wheels Outer Lane, Walkers Inner Lane. At least in theory :D

  • After decades of peace and coexistence between wheeled users and pedestrians, COVID hit, so Seattle temporarily banned wheels at Green Lake to get more people out walking. Then just as skaters and bikers started looking forward to a post-COVID lifting of this ban, a small group of persuasive (perhaps well-connected) pedestrians invented a handful of dubious stories about the horrors wheeled users had inflicted upon them. They convinced Seattle to perpetuate the ban of wheels at Green Lake.
After a year of that noise, enough of the wheeled crew finally got tired of being sidelined. A few stand-up people got us organized for some skates and convinced Seattle reps to hold interactive interview sessions with all users for a full picture. Seattle Parks agreed that all users needed an education on how to get along on Green Lake's inner loop trail again, that includes clearer signage. Hopefully more painted arrows this spring.
Green Lake's 2.8-mile loop is where we held the original 24-hour Ultraskates in 2007--2009. Given the speeds and distance Ultraskates demand now, I'd never expect faster records to happen here again, but I do hope more wheeled users get out more often to start to reclaim our lane. And walkers will hopefully get back in the habit of staying on the inside.
As you can see, the struggle is real :D
