Lifetime Mac User Tries Windows 11

  • Windows 11 is now out in beta with a redesign that many people are saying resembles macOS. With new animations, wallpapers, icons, widgets, and even a centered task bar, is the Windows 11 redesign enough to win over this lifelong macOS user, or does this fresh coat of paint only hide the inherent problems of Windows?

For a competent screen recorder i use "oCam" which is pretty decent. Other than a missing built-in screen recorder I'd say Windows 11 is an interesting OS. I still want to replace my old HP with a Mac though, especially since my old HP (a 4th gen Core i7 model) isn't compatible with Windows 11.

I don’t understand how widgets are attributed to Android. Both Windows AND Apple had “widgets” BEFORE Android. I’ve even seen big reviewers like MKBHD make this mistake. This is what most critics of Apple users forget, MOST of us came from Windows machines. The highly customizable, bloated, easily infected, buggy experience with almost zero customer service or satisfaction is very familiar. For people looking to pick up their machine and get straight into the fun or productive work without tinkering, Apple was a godsend.

Well, one has to keep in mind that Windows grew as something in the middle between Linux and Mac in respect to the target audience. Also one should acknowledge how much the software developer (programmers) community changed during the last two decades. 20 and more years ago it was almost like the programmers (of the time) were primary audience. While this is a bit incorrect it just looked that way - sometimes there were features for which you can almost say - they are implemented that way because otherwise we will look stupid for some colleagues or something overused terribly because "why not" - so typical for the 90-s. Basically Windows has a long history that makes it important not only to keep backwards compatibility with software, but also with the UX/UI and sometimes both - like the tray icons that are still supported by software compiled 25 years ago - these things make changes harder. Macs on the other hand had the "designer" kind as primary concern and were always ready to ditch all the software they supported before as long as the major set of tools used by the primary target group would be available. You can see today some of the Windows difficulties starting to show up for Apple too - the success of the iPhone and later the iPad are already putting Apple in the complicated situation where they want to integrate everything together, but it cannot be done as seamlessly as they (or anybody for that matter) would want. Imagine this with longer history of success on one of the platforms and you start to understand the weird multiple attempts to change everything and why they fail one after the other. Windows users vary from an audience similar to the main Mac audience to users who act in very similar manner to the hard core Linux/Unix bunch - you simply cannot make them all happy, you can't even make part of them happy without annoying another. And because I stopped at the point where the author talks about the desktops - there was a feature "like that" from NT.4 (may be even earlier - I am not sure), but it was primarily concerned with the desktop isolation - multiple desktops isolated almost like different machines. Blow that is the so called window station and they are still in use today, but they have nothing to do with the multiple desktops we see in Windows 10/11 - they are provided in a very funny way through the desktop window manager that hides/shows windows depending on the selected desktop. So, in a nutshell - the first one was concentrated on providing deep OS features and not so much on the visual usage the second looks, frankly weird, but enables visual presentation and OS level deep impact. The times changed , the users changed and to appreciate and understand an OS one has to understand this. Nowadays Apple made us call OS not the OS, but the visual shell, Windows on the other hand may be not so crazy like Linux, but is still more concerned about the OS meaning the operating system and not with the "OS" as visual polishing term for the shell and not the OS. So, it is something in the middle which is well balanced sometimes and not so well balanced in some versions. The actual most influential features and UX are still from Windows 95 and most attempts to replace/remove them are usually awkward and changing them or developing new ones is not a trivial task if you have in mind the long term compatibility that needs to be kept and a number of other factors. In the end Mac users will not like some things which are unimportant for people like me and sometimes to make them like windows more, Microsoft will literally enrage people like me. I still think that trying to make the end users more educated about the inner workings of the OS (not the "OS") is better long term strategy, what Apple does makes the ecosystem more closed and hard to trust for programmers who seek long term compatibility, but each of these approaches has its good and dark sides, so if we, the users, can keep our heads cool and avoid marking this or that OS or version of it as "unacceptable" for something in the UX, this will target any OS development in more rational direction, because it will not automatically make the "sale to the uneducated end user" the critical factor for the companies that make the software.

Screen recorder work around - open Microsoft PowerPoint (2013 and later), click on the Insert tab, on the far right, it should say "Screen Recording", click on that. It will allow you to choose which area of your screen you want to record, and if you want to record with or without sound. Once done recording, need to save video to your computer (right click on video and save it). Hope that helps. But yeah, Windows needs to add a built-in screen recorder...
File Explorer - If you open up File Explorer, top left is called “quick access”. You can save your most used folders under "quick access" (Right click on a folder in File Explorer and go to "Pin to Quick Access".). If you right click on file explorer on the task bar, those most used folders show up. Quite handy. [Question - is this available on a Mac?]

I do think that centering the icons in the task bar is a good move but I don't like that the time/date and quick access icons are still over to the right. Having nothing on the left makes it visually unappealing to me. If I had designed it I would have split them up and put the quick access icons on the left of the task bar and the time/date can stay on the right. I think that would be more balanced and a better use of space than just leaving the left entirely blank.

As someone who used an Apple II then a Mac from inception until the late 90s then Windows (with Solaris / Linux and NeXT thrown in at times) including Windows 11 beta I'm loving BigSur on the M1 Air I picked up a couple of months ago. Yes I'm running WSL2 and Kali on my PC but having the BSD underpinnings where I can open up a terminal for some basic tasks and then the stability on Big Sur is simply fantastic. I've rebooted my Air once since I got it... once.
In regards to Windows 11 I like it better than Windows 10, but if things continue as is it's going to be a nightmare upgrade for many users... which oddly enough will be just about the same time Apple releases Monterey and the new M1X Macs shortly followed by the new Air models early next year. Sure we can all believe it was supply chain issues that pushed back the new MBP release but was it? or is it Apple preparing a marketing push for all those potentially frustrated Windows users in late 2021 early 2022. ;)

Monterey isn’t quite as nasty, but…) It’s a small thing, but I wish MacOS were more “Windows-like” when it comes to setting up split screen with apps. The real questions for me would be more about the long term and day to day. Patching - does Windows still drop a bunch of them every week, and require you to log out as user, log back in as admin, install the patch(es), reboot and log back in as user? That was a lot of fun. Lastly, after you’ve used the install heavily for a year or two, how much do you want to do a fresh install because the registry has become such a fouled up mess?

First thing to understand about Windows: ALL programs worth having are third party. Windows is sold as an OS, not an all-in-one prepackaged experience with a controlled app store like Apple is. No one uses the Windows store.

Thanks for the vid. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I hate windows snapping to half-screen or full screen. I find it annoying because it is way too easy to do it by accident. I know other folks who love it so I guess we each have our favorite or least favorite features. On another topic, is ARM Win11 available yet and do you plan to try it out under Parallels on a MacBook, or better on an iMac? Just curious.

Windows users most of them including me don't give a damn about animation.. lol coz it eats your CPU. Believe it or not if your turn it off, the PC runs faster. No miracles on an weak machine but it's a huge difference!. I just upgraded to win 11 and let me tell you... I loved it. Coz windows was always better at comparability. All my files and apps works perfectly on win 11 when I was using win 10 hell they have even XP software that still runs!

Absolutely correct about the screen recorder. But as a cross-platform user, OBS is super powerful on both platforms and performs even better on windows than it does on macOS, so that’s my go-to for screen rec on windows and it takes 2 seconds to download and set up.
